Nassim Nicholas Taleb is the best-selling author of Antifragile and Black Swan, discusses the properties of systems that can handle disorder.
#antifragile #nassimtaleb
Best-Selling Author of The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable, Nassim Nicholas Taleb spent his entire life as a risk taker (options trader) before becoming a writer and researcher in philosophical, mathematical and practical problems with probability.
I have read all of Taleb's books. He is a lightening rod due to. the fact that, recently, his blocks people on social media that disagree with him.
Taleb is the author of a multivolume Incerto (The Black Swan, Fooled by Randomness, Antifragile, and Skin in the Game) covering broad facets of uncertainty. It has been published into 41 languages. In addition to his trader life, Taleb has also written, as a backup of the Incerto, more than 70 scholarly papers in mathematical statistics, quantitative finance, statistical physics, philosophy, ethics, economics, & international affairs, around the notion of risk and probability (grouped in the Technical Incerto).
Taleb is currently Distinguished Professor of Risk Engineering at NYU's Tandon School of Engineering (only a quarter time position) and scientific advisor for Universa Investments. His current focus is on the properties of systems that can handle disorder ("antifragile"). Taleb refuses all honors and anything that "turns knowledge into a spectator sport."

    I think you would be a lot better off knowing how to tinker in a way that can be replicated and also who already tinkered the tinkering you are about to attempt. For that you could use the scientific method. It's a great guide to tinkering efficiently. I see a bit of the hypomanic in Nassim here. Seems to have mellowed with age since. I think a better and more universal term is 'idolatry,' and I would agree that many have made an idol of bitcoin. But people make idols out of everything. That's our fallen nature as humans. Whatever Nassim loves in this world, like money, there are definitely many who idolize that thing. It doesn't render the object of idolatry irrelevant, wrong, or without value.

    Taleb is right. As an experimental physicist who did real science I can confirm: 1) science breakthroughs are often driven by new technology becoming available (think: ok, we got this new tech toy, what can we do with it? A bigger laser, lets shot it at stuff - and see what happens.). Once you find some new phenomenon by plaing with the tech, you start thinking about how to explain it - aka make a scientific theory. There are very few examples where a theory was developed first and then experiments confirm it later - those are the "big wins" for science - like Einsteins theory of relativity or the Higgs boson. 2) It is very uncommon to plan and then discover some scientific insight. Most of the times you are looking for something but you stumble on something entirely different by chance. Real science doesn't work like a tech tree in computer games. Commercial development works like that (it HAS to) - throw insane resouces to improve metric X and eventually you will improve metric X. Scientists for the most part don't do such boring endeavours. So yea, Taleb is mostly right - unless you are Einstein or Peter Higgs.

    • @urbanbuddha65
      @urbanbuddha65 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. Nice comment. Another Einstein example was his 1917 paper on the prediction of the stimulated emission of light and other radiation, which is the physics behind the production of coherent light in lasers. So he managed to achieve theoretical physics prediction of an unknown phenomenon more than once, which is really amazing.

      Life and things around us are totally based on biased... so it's all illusion... let say if we assume educated ppl are better paid off individuals it seems true but it's totally biased indeed we are not focusing the hypothesis but finding a supportive fact..because educated ppl are really paid well... so either tech is the base of scientific theory or scientific theory is the base of tech it's totally useless argument because both of the events we are discussing are already existed.. if you really wanted to prove something the you need to create the other side of the event that must not occurred in human history earlier.. the rest is pointless

    over the last (more than) 40 years I have read many, many books. I read every day. I am qualified in a number of scientific disciplines. I read the majority of his book on antifragility. I stopped about 2/3 way through, because by that time it had become abundantly obvious to me that the entire book was simply anecdotal. I don't dispute that at some times, some systems are what he terms 'antifragile'. The problem is that he presents no cohesive theory about the differentiation between fragile systems and antifragile systems. It is all just based on anecdotes and examples. This does not constitute a theory. So, bottom line, interesting concept but not really useful as far as I can see.

      @@haiderbashir3113this is an interesting claim, but having gone through the book once more to see if perhaps I forgot something, I can find no such math in the appendix. There is, indeed, an appendix with some fairly meaningless graphs, but I do not find any "complex math" at all. There is some math titled "A more general methodology to spot model error". Honestly, that isn't particularly valuable either, and in the form presented really doesn't mean very much. That's it.
