How to make Vector artwork in Affinity 2 for Photopolymer plates
More people are using Affinity to create artwork for Photopolymer plates. This short tutorial should give you the answers that you need to create your vector artwork and export to a file that will keep your plate maker happy.
Affinity is a strong alternative to Adobe Illustrator and much more affordable and it can be used to create perfect artwork for platemaking amongst other things. The most important thing is getting the settings correct, make a note of them and use them.
We are far from being experts in Affinity and we welcome any comments on making the process more simple for those who have chosen this piece of software.

    Embossing on the Adana seems to be quite strenuous for the wrist and arm, especially if you had to do that a hundred or more times. Maybe you can put the Adana on the floor and press the handle with your foot!

    • @LymeBayPress
      @LymeBayPress 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I didn’t have a problem, but I generally tend to use the Adana just to show people what to do, I prefer my Chandler or Heidelberg’s :) but I appreciate that not everyone has those large presses, it’s more a case of managing expectations, if you have a large run of a tricky job that may beat your press up it may be worth outsourcing, the letterpress community is great and there’s always someone to help.

  • @redblade8160

    At 8:30, you said "deboss" when you should have said "emboss". Embossing is when the image is raised, as you showed on the card.

    Very interesting video! I finally received a response regarding the possibility of doing embossing with the Adana. 😊 I would really like to see the rendering of a larger ornamental decoration, for example which would take up each corner of an A5 format. Do you think this is possible? Thank you very much for these valuable tips and have a nice day!

    • @LymeBayPress
      @LymeBayPress 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there, you have to know the limitations of your machine and I thing applying the amount of force needed to emboss on something that size on an Adana may be too much for the machine. If your design isn't continuous you sould be able to emboss each corner separately. It's the same with printing normally, you wouldn't get a deep deboss for the entire chase size on an 8x5, unless you were possibly printing on something very soft becase the amount of force needed to crete the impress would be too much for the press to handle. i hope this helps. hi Golbert, we are still playing with types of plate but the main brand is Toyobo, the important thing is that you are using a steel back to retain as much heat as you can and your dwell times will still be quite high, up to 10 secs sometimes... it's still a little hit or miss and won't work with all artwork, but we'rewoking on it. • @LymeBayPress

      Hi There, it all depends on the design but it shouldn't be a problem. There is an artwork guide on the website under the help section which should give you all of the details. We like vector/Ai files, you don't have to worry about dpi then but if you are scanning a min. res. of 1200dpi should be fine, the higher you go the smoother the line will be. Hope this helps Lis

    • @LymeBayPress
      @LymeBayPress 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Adam, I’ve not actually tested on a 6x4, I would say that you would need too much pressure to emboss on a 6x4 with a 540gsm board and you could damage your press. If the 540gsm is a colorplan I would say it will be too dense for a successful emboss on a small press, but as I said, I’ve not tested it….

    • @LymeBayPress
      @LymeBayPress 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the first instance I would get someone else to make your plates, until you are 100% confident with the printing process and making the artwork. Immerse yourself in the whole thing and see what time you have left to make your own plates.. Decent machinery for making plates requires quite an investment for good plates, not something that you want to do if you aren't going to use it lots. There are table top versions which you then handwash, but this isn't a process we use so i can't advise that greatly.

    • @LymeBayPress
      @LymeBayPress 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Damien, I wouldn't force an Adana, they really aren't designed for a heavy embossing, or debossing for that matter, I used the Adana to show how easy they are to set up with the embossing plates. I would only go up to a 350gsm board and a soft collton at that, or thinner paper stock. If you want to use a thicker board you will need a bigger press. that said, it also comes down to the size of the area you are embossing, more force is needed for bigger plates than small ones! hope this helps :)
