Maine Sails
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 3 ส.ค. 2022
This is our journey learning about our sailboat, "Lavender Love", and sailing the coast of Maine.
Our boat is a 1990 Hunter 30-2 that we purchased in 2022. "Lavender Love" is the name we came up with because of our love of having a lavender farm in Maine. The boat was formally called "Kole Sere".

Camden Fireworks by Sailboat
มุมมอง 8510 หลายเดือนก่อน
A surprise for us on this summer's second trip to Camden was the Windjammer festival with fireworks one evening. This was the frosting on the cake for us on a stopover in Camden. The reflections on the water were beautiful and made for a very memorable trip.
How We Bought Our Sailboat
มุมมอง 2.5K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
Finally after 40 years of dreaming we bought our sailboat! This was our experience. 1. What size and features to you need and want in a sailboat? 2. You need a place to put it - mooring or dock? 3. Who will do the survey (inspection) on the boat? 4. How will you send payment in exchange for the title? 5. How will you get it to it's home port? These are all things that need to be considered and ...
Sailing to One of America's Oldest Settlements - Castine, Maine
มุมมอง 53111 หลายเดือนก่อน
This summer we took the time to discover some of Castine, Maine's rich history. It was amazing to experience this old colonial town - arriving by boat.
Mooring Ball Winter Stick
มุมมอง 1.2Kปีที่แล้ว
Replacing our sailboat mooring ball with a winter stick or buoy. Another project checked off for winter prep! I could have paid someone to do this but I thought I'd give it a try.
Hauling Sailboat for Winter
มุมมอง 330ปีที่แล้ว
With our first summer sailing completed, it's time for hauling the sailboat out for the winter. This year we store with the mast on which saves us some money. Next we need to have the boat wrapped and winterize the engine.
Sailboat Solar Vent Intallation
มุมมอง 934ปีที่แล้ว
This project we're replacing our old solar vent on our sailboat with a new Marinco stainless vent. This solar vent installation is in the hatch and is sized differently so the Lexan needs to get replaced as well.
First Sailing Trip to Camden, Maine (and torn sail)
มุมมอง 382ปีที่แล้ว
Our first sailing trip to Maine seemed more like an adventure- this being our first summer sailing! It's about 16 nautical miles from Belfast Harbor to Camden Harbor and if conditions are perfect it takes about 4 hours on our sail boat. Of course, that's a big if - and we spent about 6 hours on the water. Thanks for watching and please subscribe for more sailing adventure content!
The Holes in our Boat - what are all these holes for?
มุมมอง 772ปีที่แล้ว
You'd think that a boat wouldn't have any holes in the hull but in fact, I counted 9. When we first looked at the boat I was trying to sort out what was what. Hopefully this will help you if you're just starting out in the boat world!
Sailing to Holbrook Island, Maine
มุมมอง 225ปีที่แล้ว
We had a great weekend this past summer sailing to Holbrook Island, Maine just south of Castine. Special thanks to Dave who went aloft and installed our wind instrument. Holbrook Island is a preserve that can only be accessed by boat with walking trails and lots of wildlife. note the Island is close to an EPA Superfund site so don't swim or eat any fish from the area! Sailboat: Lavender Love (a...
Sailboat - Preparing for Hurricane (Lee)
มุมมอง 126ปีที่แล้ว
Getting the boat ready for Hurricane Lee - hopefully just some wind and rain! Join us on our sailboat (Lavender Love) journey around the coast of Maine. 1. Take down sails 2. Remove dodger and tie down frame 3. Move anchor off of the bow and tie down 4. Add additional line (snubber) to mooring line 5. Tie off boom and random lines 6. Move things that could flie around in the cabin
Sailboat Uncovered - removing the shrinkwrap
มุมมอง 115ปีที่แล้ว
It's Spring and Maine and that means it's time to uncover the shrinkwrap from our sailboat. There's work to do on the boat before it goes in the water so this will make it easier to get those projects done. Follow along on our sailboat journey!

Hey, does this protrude from the surface of the ice during the winter? or does it sit under the surface?
Very good
Thanks
Love new sailing channels just subscribed. One day I’m fixing to do the same. Just not my timing. I’ll update my TH-cam channel when I do. Good sailing to you
Thank you. We wanted to fit it in while we can still move!
Yes, while we still can move for sure. Happy sailing
Great vid Doug !!
Thanks Rob. More to come I hope!
Id like to know what you're electrical situation is, batteries/ solar , and what you can do for how long before you need to use the engine. Im just starting out this summer
We have a 100 watt solar collector and two marine batteries. We’ve never had to use the engine to charge them but when we do run it they charge. We only use ice in the fridge(it doesn’t run now) so it’s mainly lights and occasional bilge pump. I have had to replace the ends on the solar plugs as they corrode and then it doesn’t charge the batteries.
When the wind pushes you away from the dock, approach the dock at 45 degrees, then turn the boat parallel to the dock at the last moment and jump on the dock with both lines in your hand!
In hindsight I should have done that although there’s not a lot of space between docks. I also should have had both lines laying out to the center of the boat to grab. Good advice! Thanks.
Dragging a heavy dinghy slows your boat a lot! You may consider two light kayaks that can be stowed on deck or outside the stanchions and lifelines. There are also folding dinghies. A detailed video of the interior would also be nice!
Thank for the input. We try not to take it along unless we think we’ll need it. I hate the risk of it flipping also. It would be problematic getting in/on kayaks where we moor at times.
It is cheaper to own a cover and keep the mast up! The cover can be designed to work with the mast on.
That may be something that we think about. Unless we go with a different boat! Thanks.
Well done video! Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Good luck with your adventure! Another channel you may be interested in is called "Start Sailing at Sixty" by a couple in the UK who have done much the same thing in what looks like a similar coastal area to Maine, ok not as bad in the winter! I have wanted to do this also but have decided to join a club first, it works for dinghys and small boat racers why not larger cruising boats!
Thanks. I’ll check out that other channel.
So glad we found your channel. Subscribed. We have our own dreams of sailing the Maine coast - and eating oysters, lots of oysters. Not quite ready to take the plunge. We live in Texas but love the Maine coast. We've been out a couple times on the windjammer Louis French which I spotted in your view of Camden Harbor. We own a 19' Starwind which replaced a 23' Starwind, have sailed a 40' Beneteau, and spent two weeks sailing the BVIs this summer on a catamaran. Looking forward to sharing your adventures. Fair winds y'all!
Thank you for subscribing. The Maine sailing season is so short but the Penobscot Bay is really beautiful. We drool over Beneteaus - never know what the future holds! It sounds like you have some good experience.
Nice video that seems to show happiness for the new adventure. What about the keel issue?
I thought someone might mention that! Before putting it in the water I ground it back and filled with West Marine G-Flex. It held up well for the most part with just a few blisters to fix in the Spring.
I hope to do another video on that process!
Your journey to boat ownership was very familiar! Whether we built or bought our sailboats, we went through an intensely joyous emotional process filled with visions / dreams of working and cruising on the boat. We were never disappointed. Additionally, your perspective on the "when" to take the leap was spot on: life is short with unexpected considerations! Thanks for sharing and congratulations on taking the course you have! Fair winds from Doug on WS42 Harmony
Thanks for sharing, Doug. It's all about the journey!
Interesting story! Looks like so much fun. Glad you two were finally able to make your sail boat dream come true. Hope you enjoy many more years on the water!
Thank you! We’re hoping to!
Beautiful. Fifteen years ago my family and I toured Penobscot Bay, sailing out of Bangor aboard a small cruiser. We spent full days in Castine, Belfast, Bucksport, Bar Harbor, and a few other towns. I fell in love with the area and plan to go back and visit again.
Thank you. It seems like the variety of landscapes is ever changing. I’ve heard the people come from all over to boat Penobscot Bay.
One comment about rigging the winter stick. The small winter stick like you have doesn't have any internal weight. That is why it lies flat on the water. Ideally you want it to float vertically. That is accomplished by attaching 3-4 feet of chain to the winter stick and attaching the rope to that chain. At least that is the way we do it in Southwest Harbor. Good job doing it though. Your top chain wil last about twice as long if you drop it into the mud.
Thanks Todd. I enjoy watching your videos! I wondered if I could weight it somehow and regret not getting the longer stick. Thankfully it’s a quiet harbor. It does stand up at high tide. I’ll have to work on it next time around. Thanks for the comment!
And why is it necessary to do this? This is not typically done by the harbormaster in say, busy harbors? Why not?
I meant to put in the "why" but guess I didn't. Most of the time in the Northeast where it freezes, the mooring gets replaced to protect the mooring and buoy. Where our mooring is, it can freeze which could damage the ball. Also, I've heard the top chain will last longer sitting in the mud. I'm sure some people get away without doing it.
@@mainesails Thanks for the info. It's good to see someone both conscientious and proactive. BTW I'm in the market for a 30 footer rigged similar to yours. Please put me on any waiting list should you decide to sell someday. I'll give you my email address if you post your business contact info. Thanks again!
I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks.
Always a sad day....sigh.
It sure is but we'll have to do a lot of dreaming this winter!
Certainly looks and sounds like an adventure! We’ve never been on a sailboat but are doing just a quick tour in Portland, Maine on a sailboat in a couple weeks and are looking forward to seeing what it’s like. Thanks for sharing your adventures! -Candice, Andrew, and Riley 🐾
I’m sure you’ll love it! You’re welcome.
cool video! very serene!
Thank you! It’s a great place to visit.
Never leave your boat alone!!!
