Guitar Shielding with Copper Tape and Telecaster Bridge Plate Installation: Before and After
มุมมอง 21K3 ปีที่แล้ว
So while the Telecaster was on the bench for repair, I decided to do a little tinkering. I added some copper tape to shield the electronics from EMI and I added a copper bridge plate. I did a little before and after to compare the tonal differences the bridge plate made to the guitar. I recorded unprocessed, besides some overdrive, through my Vox AC30 Amp. The copper tape and bridge plate I use...
I put a Cheap P90 pickup in a Les Paul Studio Guitar
มุมมอง 60K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I like to tinker and experiment with new sounds, so I thought I'd try out a $20 P90 style pickup I found on Ebay (link below). I installed it in a 1988 Les Paul Studio that already has a Gibson P94 in the bridge position. I hope to show how easy it is to replace pickups and try something new. What You'll Need: Wire Strippers Zip Ties (optional) Solder and Soldering Iron Screwdriver Shielding Ta...

    Its a copper plated steel plate, that's inspired by the OG

    I put a pair of those type pickups in a G 400. They were ceramic and damn hot. Perfect for stoner/doom .

    why was the last sound you used with the kind of ethereal chords so much better what did you engage at 7:00 minute mark?

    Those old studios are so amazing. My headstock snapped back in the late 90’s and it kept breaking even after the fix. It was such a great feeling guitar. I loved the plain black and silver bare bones vibe. I have a les paul classic but the early studios with the ebony fret boards had this thing. I miss it and it’s been over 24 years 😢

    I have installed these in 3 of my guitars and i love them it is hard to believe these Yibuy $17.99 p_90s sound better than all these expensive humbuckers and i have been playing for a long time .

    Nice pedalboard! What's your thoughts on the Keeley Synth-1? I already have a 3 Keeley effects on my board and depending on what direction I take, I may add a 4th. I'm looking at the either the Synth-1 or the Parallax Spatial Generator.

    • @saturnfivesound
      @saturnfivesound 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! The Synth-1 can be chaotic and hard to control. In a band setting I’ve only been able to incorporate it for solos. I do love it, and the crazy ring mod like sounds it gets when you play polyphonically is fun too.

    Dude I put the same pickups in my Epiphone sg400 and it sounds so freakin good it’s just ridiculous…. Not gonna lie I’ve got lots off these cheap pups and only time I had bad luck was with fake EMGs … but all these others that aren’t trying to mimick big brands , have been legit 💯

    You show a copper plate, yet say you "installed a steel plate for fatter tone". Also, you copper shielded the neck and pass through cavity, yet those two cavities aren't connected to ground, since you have pickguard screws for the neck pickup instead of wood screws into the body. I think you solved your problem with a better ground to the bridge plate.

  • @colinfarel
    @colinfarel 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    To be honest the modifications won't be noriced if you are playing a live gig , especially if its a classic rock song.

  • @colinfarel
    @colinfarel 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Barely heard any loss in tone after the shielding. If anything it sounds like you roll off some of the treble.

    I changed the bit muddy sounding Roswell Humbuckers of my Harley Benton CST24 to Artec P90 Humbucker sized. The sound is way more open and bright, i looove it. I'm so happy i did this!

  • @jeffthompson1869
    @jeffthompson1869 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yeah - people spend a lot on pick-ups - when it isn't necessary. The same physics work on both expensive and cheap. Unless you are dealing with a totally different design. And most of the time a tweak to the amp compensates for any differences in tone that you might hear. It's a hundred-year-old technology - except for the Fluence design - but even that - a battery powered pickup has been around for decades. AND - tweaking the sound in your amp and pedalboard would be the first thing you would want to try anyway.

    The $20 P90 is exactly what you got! It's not even close to the humbucker. There is so much more clarity and tone with the Gibson pu's.

  • @StudioDTK5
    @StudioDTK5 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I prefer the original humbucker. But that’s my opinion. Like the warmth. The new P94 doesn’t have warmth detail. I personally never had any luck in liking inexpensive replacement pickups. They never end up being worth my time.

    • @saturnfivesound
      @saturnfivesound 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I agree. Most of the time the more expensive pickups seem to have a charisma to them. In this case, the Gibson Humbucker was too dark for me. Especially in a band setting. I couldn’t cut through. But yeah, now I have this wonderful Gibson Humbucker just sitting on the bench, unused.

    I got a cheapo P94 and all it was was a strat pickup bobbin in that ring with cheap magnets around it.. it sounds ok.. but not great.

    Swap the swampy brass baseplate for a nickel one and the short pole screws for long nickel screws and it'll be even better.

    Most of those p90 humbucker sized pickups are just strat pickups hidden under cover. Still sounds good,just not a p90.

      The ones I have are hum sized single coils, they are rated over 7k so they can’t be plain strat sc. mine have metal covers, I haven’t removed them but I could. Strat pups don’t have a bar magnet on the back. Their slugs are the mags. Totally different.

    Wow! Thanks for sharing! This is the great thing about having a cheaper Gibson, or even Epiphone. You can chop it up without fear of slashing its value in half. Your guitar sounds and looks freaking epic now mate. I'm certainly doing this to my LP Tribute.

  • @gingerbeer914

    6:05-6:23 If you won't use that sound clean, you should resolder your pickup to get it into phase. The sound of two single coils in phase is much more useable than this thin sound. Think Telecaster, Jazzmaster, '55 Les Paul TV Yellow.

    Gibson stocks have ALWAYS sucked. When I was 14 I saved as much $ from MANY lawn-mowing jobs to buy a used wine red LP studio. I finally had a REAL guitar. Only problem: the pickups (490 & 498T?) s u c k e d. Since then I’ve used/borrowed plenty of GFS pickups that typically go for $35-45 and never been disappointed by their stuff. I think we often assume that you have to pay $200-300 for magnets. You don’t.

    I've always said humbuckers are crap. This proves my point. A P90 has far more clarity, definition, and tone. Wind it up to 10, and it will stand with any paf thing. My '56 Les Paul Gold Top, eats any humbucker.
