Why Professional Photographers Get Better Results

Why Professional Photographers Get Better Results
To me the color match tool is a total miss. They will probably fixed it in 2-3 years. People masking is really precise, with a bit of luck they will bring the same precision to the subject/background masking next year. They should also add teeth and iris masking for the people masking.
Match look sort of gets you in the ballpark but it's far from accurate. Would love to see you take that starting point and actually match it next time! thanks for the video :)
It's not meant to be magic. Don't know why everyone expects it to be magic. Why even take a photo of you're not going to process it yourself?
@ because it implies you can take a color grade reference image you like and it will match it. It doesnt even come close to it in most cases. If i have a processed photo why would i need match look to begin with? I could just apply my own across the other images with the apply tool
Great video thanks. I've spent time since the 16.5 update just playing with the Match Look tool, and like others have had mixed results. What it is great for is clients who bring a photo with them and say "I want that look" and also for when my associate and I do weddings or brand shoots and we can get consistency across both our sets of photos very easily. I have also found it to be useful for creativity too, with some unexpected results. When coupled with the new People selection and styles it will be very useful indeed too high volume photography. Thanks for the video!
Great lesson on C1 skin tone tool! I love that you also quickly showed some of the common use cases for it! Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
I see the potential in Match Look to experiment with different looks that I may not be able to arrive at manually. It will be able to get us quickly to a very different starting point and branch of into territories that we haven’t though of before? Great fun!
@6:51 -- Agree. However, I suspect that these features require a subscription because they depend on server functionality. You cannot promise to honor a life-time license unless you can support that server functionality for a lifetime. Subscription on the other hand, when the server dies, it sucks but, you just stop paying.
Sure, but there's a subscription for the Pro plan. I've been using it for years.
@@StudioBuilder Ahh, you're right. That's a good point and an oversight on their part. I suspect "Pro" was designed for Lifetime License and they offered a subscription as an after-thought.
@@aarontharris given that the all in one is really for the apple ecosystem, they could just use iCloud to sync settings, like for the content credential feature their “we need to offsets cost” seems just to be just a cheap way to squeeze more money, plus I would be surprised if users would use these cloud functionality so much to justify a 30% cost increment on users. I got rather pissed at Capture One policies really, so much that I wanted to cancel my subscription.
I think on the surface the skin and advanced tabs are very similar and it is a good fix. Behind the scenes though there's a lot of complexity to implement. For example what order are the colors processed and will it run into problems as the data for colors gets thinned and stretched out across various color buckets. I think it might run the risk of more banding issues with multiple colors. I know you can do similar things in programs like 3Dlut Creator but again suddenly that's a big fix vs just copying and pasting functionality from one panel to another so that's my guess why it isn't implemented the way you suggest.
Some great insight!
I'm an artist. I'm not a lawyer. This is corporate taking advantage of the individual. This is a civilizational trend.
The amount of reiterations that is sometimes required and a human hand to finish it off is at times frustrating. But sometimes it’s a high five and huge time saver 🖐️
You could have shown us how good the hair masking is (especially as it didn't look very good from what I could see). Unless it can mask hair extremely well I could not see me using it.
That's okay. You don't have to.
Amazing information. I've spent the past six hours studying this video as a guide whilst buidling my own contract. Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Refreshing to hear someone talk about their limitations rather than portraying themselves as some kind of editing guru, it's a good way to point out the benefits of a piece of software.
I have so many limitations.
3:40 - But my guess is that most users of CO uses iPhone and not android. I think the programmers at CO have statistics what the users operate system is.
That's just a guess, though. Based on what? Just a feeling?
One question… the new ‘match look’ feature, is it meant for TTL users..? I know a lot of photographers now use TTL in the studio and it gives ‘slightly’ different results from shot to shot (I’m not criticising here). Us old geezers shoot lights manually in a studio so every shot (hopefully) is exposed the same, unless the model moves way off the mark. So ‘Match Look’ isn’t needed but I can see its use when TTL is used in a studio… Just asking a question and trying to bridge the generation/technology gap😊
I do not know of a single photographer who uses TTL in the studio. In gact, I do not know of a single photographer who uses flash heads in a studio. We use strobes and, more commonly, LEDs.
@@StudioBuilder that's interesting, personally its always been Profoto packs and 7B-s/B2/B3Air on location, that was in both NYC and London, but I'm old and I see a LOT of new kids using Profoto monoblocs in TTL mode IN A STUDIO.. (crazy I know), the only time in recent yrs I used a godox AD200 in TTL was because the models were running down a beach (it worked flawlessly). But going back to the main point about matching a look or getting close I can see 'the kids' using this as well as wedding shooters with 2k images to edit... hence C1 going down the 'speed up the mass edit route in recent yrs
Thanks for the clarity you bring to this C1 update, I will buy the upgrade but not the overpriced studio version. Big thx..!!
Great content here, subbed! I like the evolution of the match look. I suggested to C1 to make it easier to match the look of photos several years ago. To see it now is just fantastic! I can drift a bit photos to photos color wise, it IS difficult to be very precise in colors. Also between shoots (on location) it’s almost impossible but this makes more coherent and much faster. I think it might be better not to use all of the settings to come closer between photos. I use Davinci Resolve as well, these two programs match very well though I think Resolve is a bit more competent than C1. CST is incredible tool!! Cloud features are more expensive as companies have to hire each other so I understand that All In One is more expensive and cloud features would be in that tier. After all expenses for c1 and PS are relatively very small compared to equipment and other services like bookkeeping programs. Question; have you noticed when doing round trips to PS and back to C1 in PSD files the metadata entered in C1 imports gets lost in that round trip?
I don't use PSD files. I try to stay out of proprietary formats, so I use layered TIFF files for all my work.
@I tested TIFF and the metadata is readable in PS beta and C1 can’t read it. I will open a case at C1. Anyhow thanks for the video
I use A Samsung tab user so the stuff about iPads and stuff is just noise. More to the point I was offered all-in-one for free last year, and I took it. This year I could find NO option to subscribe for Pro only. I realized now that I way over paid for C1 and that pisses me off. As for the ability to store settings to the cloud and then to download them Capture One is explaining that this costs money and users have to foot the bill. I would be just as happy if those settings were just easily downloaded to a USB drive, and then uploaded the same way. I'm not sure if it would take any longer. But what REALLY pisses me off is that AIO users (me) get faster problem response from C1. The idea that Pro users are second class citizens makes me crazy. As for the Studio, I figure that maybe 50 people in Canada would actually need that, and they all live in Toronto or Vancouver.
but you can sync your settings just by copying the right files. I do this even between mac and pc Btw match look works much better if you use more than one picture, maybe person standing, sitting, side view etc with one look and then apply it. I just had a photo assignment for a magazine where I mixed studio and daylight. The room was very bright and had many windows, but the light outside was very changeable. The new Match Look really helped me to adapt to these constant changes in ambient light and therefore also color temperature.
Nice, of course you can edit your images in davinci and and have consistency both ways. Thank you!
Everywhere I have not seen the actual test that should be done. Check if colors are accurate and check ratios and weights against blank squares. So I honestly don’t believe this color matching iteration is ready for prime time. Haven’t been able to try it myself as I and many others have been unable to use this newest version due to it being buggy. Can’t even open c1 when upgrading to this version.
I haven't seen any reports to what you're claiming about bugs or Match Look not working well. I'm already using it in my work and back catalogue on a daily basis with no problems. I think some people want it to be magic, but you also have to remember that as good as it already is, it's only going to get better and better.
Been using version 16.5 without issue. Remember Match Look works very well for the overall look and feel. It's not supposed to create an exact colour by number match.
@ so it’s pointless as i thought.
Funny that you mentioned DaVinci, since I'm exploring using it to color grade my photos. I often use 3D LUT Creator to color grade when I have the time and that's close to what DaVinci does. Clever to think of using Match Look in a similar way.
Capture one is bringing out amazing updates now! I am impressed with the "match look" addition!
I really wish Match Look worked for me, but I didn't get good results testing it out, possibly because I balance using the colour wheels instead of temp/tint
Match Look works on the Color Balance wheels, as well. Keep in mind that it's not a magic bullet. It's going to take time and experience to figure out how to make it work for you and your photography.
@StudioBuilder they do, but in my testing it mainly seemed to be relying on temp/tint and wasn't touching the colour balance
I think I need to do some new shoots in order to test out some of these masking tools
Heck yeah
That hit hard when you said It’s not good enough to be good enough
Description of your youtube chanel : Studio Builder helps you develop your professional photography business.
Yes, that's literally my tagline.
Do I trust Adobe? No.
IMO, the only photography that will be profitable in the near future will be those that are capturing a live story. A wedding, a sporting event for example.
So there is a particular point about Photoshop that I think you guys failed to point out. Back in the day, an initial license of Photoshop costs around $700. This you got right. What you guys missed was that approximately every two years You could buy a physical copy to upgrade to the latest version for around $250. As of right now, if you're looking at the cost of running Photoshop per year, It's now double of what it used to be after the initial license buy in.
The Photography plan at Adobe is only $12.99/mo and includes Lightroom. That's not twice the cost. It's half. If you factor in inflation, it's actually less.
Please can I use plywood and follow the same steps then paint it either white or black depending on which color I want???
Be free man! Do whatever you want!
I'd love more about usage rights. What are the usual rights and licensing you give on different types of images or shoots? I stumbled upon your videos cause I was looking at see traditional usage rights for headshots and such to see if I need to change what I currently offer. But I'm also wanting to get more into licensing in 2025 and it's a bit intimidating to figure it all out.
Noted!
It feels a bit ingenuine that you say you care the most that they steal from your clients. No, they steal YOUR work. When the AI, trained on your work, replaces you, it might get cheaper for your clients. But YOU have the disadvantage.
How is that not genuine?
As long as Capture One doesn‘t improve significantly their more than crappy DAM functions, they will not see any money from me, no matter how TH-camrs celebrate any AI features.
I've spoken to the product manager about this exact thing. Hopefully we see some updates in the future. What's missing for you?
@@StudioBuilder Seriously? You never tried to find a certain album or project inside the catalog with a simple fulltext search? Not to mention the ability to create smart albums using a filter for project names? How about selecting more than one album at a time to move it to another project or group? And why is it possible to see all images in a project, but not in a group? I made about 3 requests for at least some features, but C1 prefers to doze in the DAM department.
This is great!
My relationship with adobe resembles the relationship between my junky friend and heroin. He spends most of his time calling heroin a nasty b**tch, but he also uses it daily.
What hosting site would you recommend for a beginner?
Squarespace.
Thanks for creating and sharing this information about C1. Great tips and techniques. Cheers, Keith (Barrie, Ontario)
I wish they actually improved the software or have super good price for existing perpetual license onwners........... and not want huge amount of money for minimal upgrades/ lens cameras support. They are very very dirty when they saw they started to grow, they show their real face. I am very disappointed.........And mans slower AI toold artificially? Really dude. This needs to get out to more ppl see we put pressure on them or else they will be adobe the 2nd. I feel betraied so much. I am only a semi pro hobbyist and it's very unfair to have them do this. Also they only do apple apps, android is ignored. So I pay for a thing I never use, it's disgusting. Make an android app, wtf............ Nope I am NOT switching to crapple to use your software. YOU need to make an app for android and that's it. So they are lazy also.
The new version is min blowing and I'm super excited to share what I've been able to get my hands on this month. Video coming in 1.5 weeks.
$400.00 ??? Does the area though, dictate anything towards that? Maybe in NY or LA, but what about smaller areas? I live in NC. There's no way any actor is paying me $400.00, no matter how much experience I have. lol
I disagree. I charge $500 and live in a city of 500,000. I know photographers in Raleigh and the triangle who are charging $500/session. In LA and NYC actors are paying $600-1200 for a session.
@@StudioBuilder holy crap! I live in a small town in NC, population is probably around 25,000.
Ok, OK! You're qualified!
Oooo - it has a Name! It's called "Dark Patterns" (00:15)
It's interesting how a company with a subscription system decides to use someone else's image without paying even once.. It seems that you don't have to pay for a subscription in this case
I really hate what Capture One has turned into. As you said, capture one was initially created for tethering. Then they made Basic and Pro... now Pro isn't actually Pro anymore, cause they want you to pay 3x the (already very expensive) price for a few extra features that should really just be included in the Pro version.
Thank you for your content. As a headshot photographer based in Canada I would love to learn strategies to approach new clients. Examples of sales pitch and content ideas to promote my services as a newcomer photographer. I have visited your web site and I found amazing books, Im reading Marketing made simple… but as you know it takes time. I love Peter Huerley’s style of video content, very focused, most of the time short.
Really best if you stay in an all inclusive. Mexico and Cruz ships. Pura Vida
*I believe the word you were looking for was that Adobe's just keep gaslighting everyone.*
Yes. I did use that term in another video on the subject.
Adobe is stealing your work period, kidnapping you, forcing TOC. Next you'll sign your house over. No Thanks, I got paper, inks and a nice scanner.😮😮😂
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
I wish I could get this to work. I’ve done everything and nothing happens. Black mask, white brush, white lint on black fabric and it goes nowhere
