Applause is primarily the expression of approval by the act of clapping, or striking the palms of the hands together, in order to create noise; generally any expression of approval. Audiences are usually expected to applaud after a performance, such as a musical concert, speech or play. Applause should not be confused to clapping with the rhythm of a song but should have a random, sporadic matt...

It was a great song. But Leonard didn’t belong to anyone. His Susan who we called Suzanne was the only woman he had children with. For a reason. 🎯

Does every one who wrote a hit song about heartbreak, owe the partner that broke their heart any money?........no Same applies to cohen and "suzanne"

Yes, I suppose Cohen feels he owns the song, so doesn't owe any consideration to the inspiration... he was cruel to his other muses as well - I suppose 'spirituality' is a good cover...

So, as I understand it, she ultimately rejected Leonard, and did not love him. But somehow he is now obligated to contribute to her care? Why doesn't she expect the same from her undoubtedly numerous other lovers?

Yes, it is kinda sad that LC did not feel the “urge” to reciprocate a gesture of assistance to Suzanne in her time of need, as she was an early inspiration to his musical success … he could have signed over the royalties just to the original song … and that would’ve been a huge help through those years of her recovery and struggle… oh well … what a lovely human being …

Suzanne's mortal beauty is immaterial. That Cohen recognized her spiritual beauty is remarkable. I'm saddened that she and many other gentle souls are suffering. I am grateful for Leonard's tribute to her and all gentle souls in general, and especially his own.

it's weird how she both is the legend told about, and collateral in the path of a Great Man. when in reality she is a bolder, braver, more pure human spirit than even what can be expressed by the greatest poet. she deserved better for her life. where is her child? why isn't her child taking care of her?

My cross road song! Just out of hospital, narrowly, unexpectedly survived a death accident, I fell in lonely hole. Bought a record player and some LPs on a fleemarket. Patchouli oil and plants, books became my friends, it took a year before I could speak. Cohen, angelo branduardi, Hesse. Mentally totally off grid. With Suzanne I started my live as a ritual. Now 48 yrs later, I did well, still mentally off grid, far far away in my own dreams, but now even physically far far away. YT as the only escape, easily switched off. Great song, nice upload, thks

It is good, when those immortalized in song. Have happy over tragic endings. Too often it is the other, less desireable alternative which steals the headlines. One grandmothers family left Montreal for more liberal Toronto by first ww. Other half is in academy hill cemetery in Northumberland county Ontario, Concord & Salem Mass & NH

I wish the best for Suzanne. She chose to let him go but perhaps the song would never have materialized had they realized their relationship. I wonder if they know that Cohen had said in a live concert that he signed all the rights away to "Suzanne" from day one because he didn't know any better. Also, Cohen was bilked by his manager in his last days as well.

"Pride goeth before a fall." She brought her financial troubles on herself. In her own words, "It was beneath me to ask." Cohen may have been aware of her situation, but I can't even imagine the complexity of the spiritual calculations he must have been considering over what to do about it. Their relationship seems to have been extremely deep and complex. Perhaps he thought initiating a financial arrangement would be received as crass, or commercisl, or insulting, or who knows what? In any case, it is certainly one of the most beautiful songs to come out of the 60s, and it's regrettable that the inspiration for it was not able to share in the rewards.

It's a bit naive to expect that Leonard Cohen would bail her out after her rejecting him sexually. It's just not how most men operate but especially famous ones. Especially since he had no shortage of women, including Marianne in Greece with whom he had a live-in relationship. He became so caught up in fame and the people he met that it killed off his relationship with Marianne. He was in the eye of the cyclone and was using various drugs at different times. Cohen savoured moments and had a fine sense of observation. This Susanne is only recently keeping notes. What happened to her is very sad but this is just how life is. Poignant.
