    I like your reviews, but I find both the Rollei 35AF AND the Pentax 17 rather pointless. $800 and $500 respectively for products that give no more functionality than (albeit larger) used (but well maintained, and sometimes almost new if bought from Japan) SLRs at a third of the price. Also, if the small size is important, any number of digital point-and-shoot cameras with a myriad of extra functions will perform better for very little money.

    Awesome video!! please do more. And I actually like the hand writing, the presentation. Please don´t change!! For me personally, I´d choose the Olympus out of these :) Would be awesome if you could do a similar test with 28 mm lenses! And maybe for a 50mm v2 test, bring in that Contax and Leica lens and see if it really is better than those. Because some people in forums say that for example the Canon can actually be sharper than the Leica R summicron 50mm. I don't know, I have the Leica and Contax, but not Canon!

    I own a Pentax Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4 in M42 mount. I am not sure it is as good as the SMC Pentax you have here, but I do love it on my Canon 5D Mark III. I have tried to use it on my 5DS, but that is where it begins to fall apart because of the higher resolution of the sensor. Nevertheless, it is a marvelous feat of engineering that these lenses look as good as they do on modern digital sensors when manufacturers were optimizing their lenses for the 4MP or so of resolution data of most 35mm film stocks of their day. Great video!

    You're lining up the lenses backwards to the direction you're writing your chart. Lenses go from right to left, then the chart goes from left to right. I mean I understand it, but it just makes for a better feeling imo.

    I started watching this video because the old Miranda's - not the ones produced in the 80's - are really good cameras that suffer from brand snobbery. However, I noted that the video is all about another kind of snobbery: the REAL photographer's snobbery. The viewfinder of this Miranda is in terrible conditions- it can be serviced, but you'll be spending some money to do so - 44 mm is not a standard for lenses, and it's not easy to find a reliable camera that's this old in such good conditions. Without servicing them, of course. Do I think 500 euros is what Pentax 17 should cost? No. However, it's a niche product and there's a price to pay for the lack of scale. Plus, the 17 is a great half frame camera that does a wonderful job in such a small piece of negative. There's a target for it, even if it's not you nor me.

  • @jaunman71

    People bitching about the price saying that “well you can get blah blah blah for there same price and a better camera “ are missing the point. Yes you can get an old camera does the same or more or less but the fact that PENTAX are keeping film analogue alive by investing in new cameras is a marvellous thing. Don’t forget film cameras back in the days were also not cheap. A canon Demi 1963 would cost you 1200 GBP in today’s equivalent. The price of a brand new film camera considering the investment in producing this products is amazing. Yes its not for everyone but the real film communities should support this produce even if they do not intend in buying one. Also how can you review a product without actually have one and using it extensively?? Too many wannabe film TH-camr photographers jumping on the wagon.

    If you make another comparison video with more lenses then rather than testing on-axis at f/5.6 or f/16, where the results are very similar, you should show the corners at f/5.6, where differences are more likely. Personally I would test on-axis at f/1.4, f/2.8, and off-axis at f/1.4, f/2.8, f/5.6, but I can understand if that is too many tests.

    You can easily unscrew the coupling prong on the Nikon if you are annoyed by it and are not using it on an early film SLR that requires it.

    The Pentax 17 should have had manual focus (or AF). The zone focus defies the idea of saving exposures via expanding to half frame. What was gained, is lost in your zone focus guessing game.

    You should work on presentation part. So much effort, so much work, but flow and editing... I'm not a native English speaker myself, so I understand broken English even better than "fluent" English, but your pauses may tire some natives. It's a really good idea to bring different 50 1.4 and show that there is practically no real difference between them. People wrote kilometers of text on forums, talking about the “character” of these lenses. I see the same circles in the bokeh. I don't think I can tell them apart in any real photo. But i think the coin test is a little harsh. Old lenses tend to lose contrast at close distances. It would also be cool to compare some kind of autofocus lens with them, but with a comparable formula, for example EF 50 1.4

    I want them to make a camera with what would have been 2 sensors, but with film in place of one of the sensors. The other can take digital photos at the same time, and give an EVF with heads up display, black and white viewfinding when you have black and white film, autofocus with that sensor, focus peaking, etc.

    It's really not fair to compare a new $500 camera to a camera that, if it were built today, would likely sell for $1500-$2000. Congratulations on a terrific find, and shoot it till it falls apart, which hopefully, won't happen for many years. Mirandas were beautiful cameras, and the Sensorex line were pretty much the last great Mirandas.

    Very nice camera! The shutter curtain looks straight and sounds great, so it should work fine. Miranda's lenses were extremely good and designed in partnership with Soligor. By the way, Pentax is releasing one more film camera this year. The half-frame 17 was just the first on out of the gate (but no one knows what the second one will be.)

    A half-frame gives half the resolution of a 35mm film, which is already limited. And $500 bucks? No way! For $500, buy a medium-format vintage camera and call it a day. You get better results with it.

    It's funny to see people viciously attacking those who mention the very, very obvious shortcomings of this camera and the shortcomings of the direction it points to. Just be honest folks, you cheer for this camera not because it's a good product. It's absolutely mediocre. You cheer for it because you wan't it to "save film." Only, it won't, not that it needs "saving" to begin with. You're selfishly throwing the novices that might buy this camera under the bus because it supposedly "supports the cause." That's a very bad reason to support a product.

    I don't get all the negative comments by many people. They are claiming it's too expensive & better to buy a used 1970s camera. The thing is Used film cameras are not cheap & are not reliable at all. I can't give explanation for some people who might find it pleasing when their used old film camera brokes (mechanical) or just dies (electronic). Maybe they like self inflected pain 😬. Many of us don't have the knowledge to repair it ourselves when it breaks & cameras with electronics (like the canon Ae1, Nikon f3, Pentax me) need someone skilled to do so. And quite a lot of us are not lucky to have a person/store near our place that still repairs film cameras in this day & age. And how can anyone buy Leica film camera? It cost the same as a car where I'm based. So I'm really happy Pentax has launched this new film camera.

    • @gavinjenkins899
      @gavinjenkins899 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes they are cheap. Better cameras than this by far are for sale as I speak for $100 in fully working condition. Konica Eye. Canon Demi. Canon Twist 35. Yashica Samurai (that one is half frame and autofocus and has a zoom lens, all for $100) And yes they are plenty reliable. I've bought dozens of ebay cameras, never once have I had one single one. Not one. Ever fail after the 30 day ebay warranty (if it's before that it cost you $0). And you don't need to repair anything anyway even if one did happen to break. Just buy a second one if you dont' want to repair. You'll still be hundreds of dollars ahead of a P17. And then buy a 3rd one. And a 4th one. You'll STILL be ahead of the cost of a P17.

  • @marike1100

    One there are no parts for those old cameras anymore. Even here in NYC many of them cannot be repaired. $499, a fraction of the price of the cheapest beginner digital camera, for a beautiful mostly metal camera, repairable for decades with a full Ricoh warranty is not too expensive. It’s the price of one third party prime lens. Lastly people spend hundreds on ancient compacts like the Olympus XA-1. If you love film, Pentax 17 is a no brainer.

    • @gavinjenkins899
      @gavinjenkins899 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You can get an ALL metal, not mostly metal, half frame camera, with a better lens than this (2.8, even sharper), superior manual controls, more portable shape, no annoying focus by wire weirdness, no battery that can run out (it has a meter, but it's like a solar panel one it powers itself), better in every single way, camera than this, for $100-120, called a Canon Demi. Then you can buy 3 more of them as backups if you want (which also means you DO have parts for them. x3 of every part, in fact, though why bother to repair at all when you have 4 copies?), and still be saving money. Zero reason to choose P17 over that.

    Just commented on your Sony Alpha 350 review and now I find that I'm here for this too! I have two F2's (including the final DP12 'AS' model). With my 50mm f1.2 lens mounted they are enormously heavy to the point where I rarely have them with me. Having some physical 'issues', it's just too much weight for an old man (63) like me. A younger and fitter man would have no problems though (recommend the widest shoulder strap you can find). It's also worth mentioning that the F2 range is expensive. The two I bought (months apart) were a combined UK £1,200 (including precautionary servicing). If you're thinking of buying one, I suggest using an established seller (e.g. Gray's of Westminster in London) and paying the extra for peace of mind. Liking this channel very much - subscribed.
