Gibson Les Paul P.A.F Comparison..Holmes, Shaw, Throbak HD 1080p
I have THC in my R9 …. Super articulate in the clean to break up!
Great video!
Love that neck pick up with the bd2
Gibson custom buckers?
as soon as you looked down the neck, I knew this video was a waste of time. That is NOT how to check the neck
Thanks for your honest opinion and checking it out!
@@NightOwlStvdios Place a capo on the first fret, hold down the string at the neck, and look at the relationship between the string and the fretboard around the 7th fret. If there's a gap, the neck is bowing forward. You can use a straightedge to check for neck relief by laying it down in the center of the fretboard. If there's light shining through, or if the straight edge rocks, there may be too much neck relief, but everyone likes a different setup so it doesn't matter what either one of us think.
Holmes has that growl I like.
I agree!! Thank you for checking it out!
Love that RD in the back!
Awesome video and I'm definitely going to use this technique next time I restring my guitar.I fight the thin strings every time. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for checking it out! I’m really glad it helped you out!!
I bought one too. It has a nice, thick sound. It's like a high-gain TS.
Where did you have the volume in tone set for each guitar
I had them all at 10! I didn’t mess around with volume roll off, thank you for checking it out!
Hey man , I can understand why you would change out the electronics , BUT I particularly love the unique tones you can get from it . Particularly with the bass end boosted to balance the treble with my crossover distortion overdrive pedal ( Brimstone Audio . Notable users ; Enor from flying frog brigade, {Les Claypool side project} and bassist of Imagine Dragons ) , did you by chance keep the electronics ? I love this guitar and wanna make another or transplant the electronics into a reissue.
I ended up putting the electronics back in and loved the versatility! Thanks for stopping by!
@@NightOwlStvdios I love active pick ups! I get some really psychedelic sounds out of my RD artist I love that guitar, it needs some work actually I need to find somebody who can handle the Moog circuitry.
Loved this video! Very easy to understand. Thanks! Subscribed!
Thank you!!!
This pedal is awesome. I think that the refractor is a bit better but this one is pretty cool. It is much creamier than I expected. Honestly what I liked most about it was that on the low gain it had that Jimmy page tone and you know I love that. By the way, what kinds of magnets are in that guitar? Thanks again for another amazing video. This is still my favorite show on You tube. Take care!
Thank you so much for checking it out! I know I’ve been really absent and I’m sorry, but thank you for the constant support!!!
What do you recommend for cleaning the nut? I was about to put some of the big bends nut sauce on yesterday when one of my strings broke. I discovered that there was a black and red residue on the nut slot of the high E string. I’m waiting on some new strings to come in. However, before they come in I’d like to be able to clean that out.
I’m glad you got some of the nut sauce, but sorry about your string! In the past, I’ve tried music nomad all purpose guitar cleaner on either a toothpick or Q-tip to get in there. I’m careful not to scrape or gouge the nut to create further issues. Then put some nut sauce on and hopefully that helps you out! Thanks for watching!!
@@NightOwlStvdios I will definitely give that a try. Thank you so much!!!
Can't go wrong with either one. To me, Throbak has that sweet sound and smoother. Shaw has a little more gain and thicker on the rhythm. Holmes is more define and clear since it has less gain than the other 2. I have both Throbak and Holmes and tried them on my R9. Just like you said, it's personal preference. I love the Throbak for the creamy and sweet sound and love Tom Holmes for it's clean and clarity. As for prices, that's just how the market goes. Many times, you pay for the rarity of the product and may have nothing to do if it's better or not. Try to buy a PRS Modern Eagle 1 with the Brazilian neck and tell me if it worth the $18,000 price tag. Just remember, the Throbak is almost double the price of Tom Holmes when both were in production.
This is a great response! Thank you for watching and I’m sorry for the delayed response. I feel the exact same way about the Throbak’s and Holmes. I lean more towards the Throbak’s for that thick rhythm tone, then layer guitars with the crispy top end of the Holmes. Would I buy the Holmes again?….probably ha ha. Thanks again!
Ridiculously awesome video. Straight to the point, and very clear. This helped me tremendously. Liked and subscribed!!!!
Thank you so much for watching and the kind words! I’m really glad this helped, you made my day!
My Les Paul has been a dog to play since I bought it in 2019 despite it going to a luthier for a set-up early on. It turned out that the neck relief was way out, but the game changer for me was your permission to not follow Gibson specs for action and pickup height. My guitar now plays like my old Studio (brilliantly) and as good as my collection of PRS guitars, and sounds like a Les Paul should. Thank you.
I’m really happy you were able to find a setup that works for you. It took a long time for me to figure that out as well! Once I strayed from factory specs, it just felt better for my playing style! Thank you for watching!
How do you even decide on a setting? They all sound great. It’s like, just randomly set it to something and use it.
I agree! This pedal sounds good wherever you set it! Thank you for watching!!
Tim shaw>holmes >throbak
Thank you for watching! Have a good one!
Ziggy ! Super cool… your great! Love your “ simple”classic “petty” tone ! Always in vogue! Sold ! I want one … im happy you have a reissue so i dont have to pay 400 plus for a 90s pedal and you saved me from buying other pedals and time ! Your tone is what i want! Bravo! Thanks again!
Sorry for the delayed response! Thank you so much for the support and comment. I was pleasantly surprised by this pedal and still use it almost every day! Another great pedal is the JHS Morning Glory V4. Has that bluesbreaker vibe with a little more mid hump. Thank you again, you made my day!!
Thank you for all you do my man.. sweet tutorial!!
Thanks for checking this out man, I really appreciate it! And thank you for making my day!
Wonderful playing dude!!! Throbaks for me. Snappy bite and snarl. Holmes are nice but way overpriced and overhyped. Shaws are warm but lack bite and punch of the others. Have you ever tried OX4 pickups?
Thank you for watching! I feel the exact same way, I favored the Holmes for a while, but keep coming back to the Throbak’s. Thought I’d love the Shaw’s but I need a little more out of them. I haven’t tried the OX4 pickups but have heard great things, any insight on those?! Thanks again
@NightOwlStvdios I have OX4 low winds in my LP standard and some OX4 custom wound T-top types in my 78 custom. Both sets are amazing, organic, snappy and just have that magic. Superb.
Thank you!! I’m really glad you told me that, I think I’m going to replace the Shaw’s with OX4’s. Do you like the low wing or custom the best. I’m assuming the custom for this particular year of guitar. It’s pretty close to the ‘78, but it’s a heavy log ha ha
@@NightOwlStvdiosThe Shaws sound a little dull here, similar to what I experienced with my ‘85 LP. They really opened up with 500k pots, much more clarity. The original volume pots were under 300k and I think the tone pots about 150k 😮. You said you wanted to leave yours stock, but you won’t regret upgrading to a 500k wiring harness, the original pots are the culprit, not the pickups
whats wrong with the nails bro?
Ha ha, good catch on that. They’re bad looking from a distance….zoomed in even worse. Thanks for making my day
I set my neck relief to 0.010" and my string height to 2mm exact on the low and high E stings. I found 5/64 too low and 3/32 too high. I play the guitar and adjust the pickups to my tastes like you do.
Thanks for watching! I’m gonna try the same setup you have and get it low as possible. I love low action, but I’m also a heavy hitter so it’s a balance. I feel you on the pickups, I’ve tried spec, but I like to follow my ears. Thanks again!!
Do you pair it with another drive or boost before/after it for lead tones ?
Thanks for watching! For leads I usually combine it with another OD in front of it! My go to pedals for that are a Morning Glory V4, J Rockett Blue Note or .45 Caliber, or if I want more saturation, a Barber Direct Drive. Another great pedal on its own is a Barber 1/2 gainer! It’s larger in format, but its 2 channels with internal trim pots. It’s a fantastic pedal! Thanks again, I hope this helps!
Great technique Phil! I have been doing it this way since I first watched this video when you posted it. I just realized that I failed to comment on it. Awesome video and as usual I have learned something valuable. Take care brother!

WOW! That is an absolutely beautiful guitar! For it to find you is definitely a blessing of fate. You play it beautifully too. It looks to be in wonderful condition. I really enjoyed hearing this guitar. That pup has a nice tone. Have you pulled it out yet to determine what it is? Regardless it has a beautiful Jazz/Blues tone. Thank you for sharing this. @@NightOwlStvdios Always brother, Always!
good setup! 3/32 is the same as a thin pick 0.9mm that i have... i will try this low... i am using very similar but not too low, i use 1.2mm and 1.5mm with 011 string... i love the feeling os low acting, my limit is to bend on the 15th freat a full bend on the high E and it not choking... maybe my neck radius blocked my trys to get any lower from 1.2mm... good video! thanks for share it!
Thank you for checking this out! I love that you check it on the 15th, that’s the first bend I go to as well!! I also love low action but I find these LP’s are the only ones I can get that low, based on the frets for sure. The only other guitar I can get that low is the Novo. Great comment, thank you again!
@@NightOwlStvdios very true! I always know for me the les pauls are the best ones in playability... my giby has more relief in low E side than high E... i put a reliwf of 0.06" on high and the low E stays at 0.08"... in the beginning i thought that was bad and wrong but now i guess it makes sense cause it alows to put a action like yours 0.09".... this actipon plus thw relief gives me what i need and free space for strings runs free
I love your comment, I think I was stuck on what Gibson’s setup was, and the “right” way to do things. But it’s also player’s preference and what works for me may work for you! It might not work for others, but I love a really low action and I can only really achieve that with my LPs. For whatever reason they just work well with my hands ha ha! Thank you again!

Their naming convention makes me think they're targeting the good ol' Marshall Shred Master a bit, perhaps? Then again this does seem to sound thicker -- like more Plexi in a box? Tough to say.
Great call on that! I had a shredmaster reissue recently and you hit the nail on the head. This pedal had a better range and a thicker sound. You can’t really beat it for the money! Thanks for checking it out!
Fantastic demo as always! That Boss Blues Driver is just awesome! I have said it before and I will say it again, watching you play just reminds me of how much I suck at guitar LOL! Nice tone mate !!! I👏👏👏👌🏼
Thank you for watching!! I appreciate the support! I love this guitar!
I have a few things to say so first off, that is a badass Strat! I love the gold. She sounds great with the Texas pups. I loved the Squier Affinity so much that for my 56th birthday my wife bought me a Fender Jimi Hendrix Signature Model. I am in love with that guitar. I put Fender 69s in it and wow! It’s awesome. The demo was fantastic as usual. As far as Little Wing goes, I have 2 studio versions and all of the published live versions as well as a few bootleg versions and of all of them Jimi never played that song the same way twice! Its one of those songs that you just have your own version of. Yours was great. I play a simpler version but it works fore me. But your Wind Cries Mary was just awesome! The Smashing Pumpkins demo was super badass. I have always loved Billy’s tone and you nailed it. The other pup demos were fantastic. I love the sound of your Strat. I wanted to ask you something. I love the bluesbreaker a lot but do you anything about the Boss Blues Driver? If so what is your opinion and if you own one will you consider a demo? Another fantastic show! I always look forward to the next. By best to you and yours brother.. Jay
Thank you again my friend for the support! How do you like those ‘69 pickups? I was looking at those before!! Man, Jimi isn’t easy to play ha ha, I love that you’ve got all those versions. He’s one of those artists that’s so good that it makes you listen for sure! Funny you should mention the blues driver, I’ve got a keeley modded one coming so I’ll be sure to do a review for you! Again, thank you for everything and I look forward to talking soon!
Fantastic show as usual. Love your blues playing. I can hear the Page influence in your blues and the Zep riff was right on! I really like this pedal. It has a nice vintage sound. Thanks again for another badass demo. As always, I am looking forward to the next episode.
Thank you for watching man!!! I was hoping to hear from you on this one, it’s a great pedal for how seemingly simple it is! That spectrum knob worked for many different amps and it’s a relatively cheap pedal! Thanks for all the support, means the world to me!
Honest question, why add string D, High E and the rest of way you did em?
Thank you for reaching out!! Was that for putting the strings on or for the height setup?!! I’d love to clarify as best I can!
It was for the order you put the strings back on
Got it! To be honest, it’s just the way I’ve done it for years, you can go 6th to 1st as well. I think it’s more of a comfort thing, I like the idea of spreading the tension out, which is probably more of a mental thing than actual fact if that makes sense. I hope that answers your question?!
@@NightOwlStvdios I kinda figured you did for tension but thought I'd ask. Thanks
Love mine tbh
It’s a great pedal, thank you so much for watching!!

Wow! Nice axe! I could hear a little bit a Hendrix vibe. Thank you for sharing this with us. I have never heard this guitar played..Speaking of Jimi I am a Hendrix superfan. I just bought a Squier Affinity Stratocaster.. Its my first one. I have always played Pauls. The Strat is a whole new ballgame. I am loving it though. Do you have a Strat? I would love to hear you play one. Thanks for everything Phil. Stay Heavy my friend.
I was really surprised by this guitar! I had an LSL Saticoy that I really liked, then I played this Novo and the neck was perfect so it ended up being the winner for me! It's funny you mention a strat! I was also in the same camp as you, I've had Gibsons all my life, and recently bought a custom shop strat, I'll be sure to do a demo on that one for you! I've got a honeybee amps clean drive plus pedal that I'll use with it, it's Stevie/Jimi tones which go really well with that guitar. Thanks again man, it's nice to have you back!
