I was horrified some years ago to find that the stir-fry sauce I was using had whey in it , then there was wasabi paste w/egg yolk and whey, then the Planters then (recently) I found out some cheaper spices can be ground with animal bone😱...It took a while to get really good at label reading, but when things aren't even on the label- that level of trickery is just plain disgusting😫 Great video👍 New subscriber✌💚
Amazing Video! That cake looks so amazing! Thank you for helping your fellow vegans find great recipes for the season!
@@Chad-q8t9s thank you and happy holidays 😊
Yes, we’ve been mislead for decades. Like promoting plants and grains as good for you🤥
Good grief…
Good video. Damn, being vegan is like trying to run through a minefield!!
The usage of "plant-based" in your banner seems out of place. The term plant-based has basically no meaning, it is very often used online to describe flexitarianism, or vegetarianism. Even when used to describe no direct animal usage, it ignores animal testing, and any/all non food related animal exploitation. It always gives me a lot of doubt about a person, especially when they appear to be using the deliberately nonsensical term interchangeably with vegan.
The term plant-based can be pretty vague, but I think there shouldn't be too much confusion here given that it's right underneath "vegan". The two terms are not interchangeable. The term "vegan" as applying to consumption choices in conjunction with ethical standings, and plant-based refers only to consumption. Because of that I don't think it's incorrect to say that the recipes I create are both vegan and plant-based, with my motivation being to promote veganism.
@@veryveganval Using the two terms next to each other, adds to the deliberate confusion that suits the plant based companies, and marketers, but works against the animals. The two terms are very deliberately used interchangeably by the dodgy, to the point that many people do not know the difference between them, or the definition of, and reason for veganism. Oxford Dictionary: "(of food or a diet) consisting largely or solely of vegetables, grains, pulses, or other foods derived from plants, rather than animal products." Cambridge Dictionary: "consisting or made completely of plants, or mainly of plants" Merriam-Webster Dictionary: "consisting primarily or entirely of food (such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, oils, and beans) derived from plants" So a ham sandwich is plant-based by definition.
@@Skobeloff...Nothing does more to harm the acceptance and spread of veganism than gate keepers like your self. Maybe instead of trying to tear other vegans down you should try doing something more positive.
Please leave the shit show and have peace somewhere else.
It took awhile to narrow it down. I have a localized allergy to carmine. My eyes get red itchy and irritated with purple eyeliner. Yes, just the purple. Even the high end eyeliners often have carmine. Even the “clean” lines.
The more you know- I guess red and blue does make purple.
I nearly bought a pot pie once with vegan in big bold letters on the front on the packaging. Upon further inspection the meat in the pie was what the vegan label was referring too but the rest of the pie was NOT Vegan.
😮 do you happen to remember what brand?
@@veryveganval No but I remember it was at Walmart in the Frozen section. I don’t shop there very often. I felt the labeling was intentionally deceptive; glad I read the fine print. Edit: I tried googling it and it might have been Marie calendars made with Gardein Chicken but it was so long ago I can’t be sure.
Thank you, this is very useful to know when travelling to USA.
Happy to help, and I hope you enjoy your travels!
You nailed morning star aka nestle, and I was at Safeway Saturday and saw they had new stuff with Vegan emblem. I thought Oh, finally! Until I flipped the package over: bio engineered. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Grown from fetuses? Really safest foods are organic veggies and that which you grow. 😌peace be with you!
Apple pies are deep fried anyway in the same French fry oil. Great Video!
If you're worried about platic waste, look for the little glass jars of apple sauce, then you get to keep the jar :D Also, that cake looks lit! <3
I've never seen applesauce in glass in the small size, but I'll keep looking! And thank you!
I really admire your attention to details. Probably why I flunked Vegan 101.
We're all just doing our best out here, surrounded by hidden milk powder
@@veryveganval I'm so tired of clever product packaging.
Great to see an actual vegan, talking about veganism online. The majority tend to be plant based, completely devoid of ethics.
Thanks- doing what I can!
Gelatin used for clarifying fruit juice concentrates, and 'natural flavours' are two others that come to mind
Isinglass in wine clarification is very similar
Okay, I didn't see some of these tripping us up. Thanks for the info.
You bet!
On nutritional information, Progresso soups that are vegetable soups, chick pea soups, etc will say "Vegetarian, not vegan".I've been reading labels more carefully these days. Also, no one tells you if their plastic bottles are BPH free, so I can assume they are contaminated with BPH.
I was surprised that toilet paper isn‘t vegan.
great video, it's so crazy to me how animal products get "thrown" into stuff without a second thought!! Just a clarifying question from someone living in central Europe: does a proactive and unanmbiguous vegan labelling exist at all? Such as the yellow v-label? Or do you always have to rely on brand claims or checking the ingredient list yourself?
Certainly what we have is not as robust as the yellow V-label. We do have a vegan certification that's done by the Vegan Action, where they verify that products are vegan and haven't used animal testing (in most cases). I don't find it on a lot of products though. Brands have to apply, pay, and go through a fairly long certification process to get the Vegan certification, so I think unless they are specifically targeting vegans most brands don't bother.
Great video, we must always remain keen and on the lookout! New sub, you're awesome, very intense blue eyes, so pretty ❤🎉
Wow, so informative and I have never seen your channel before. You are great!👍
Thank you!
I don’t eat fries anywhere because you never know if meats were fried in the oil.
You do know if you get them from vegan eateries ;)
The Morning Star one makes me the most confused. Some of their items (burger patties - certain ones) have the egg white so far down in the ingredient list it makes me wonder with how little they are using that a vegan binder could have been used without really impacting the cost. I wager that the amount is maybe 1/2 teaspoon or less per patty in some of them so why are they even doing it!?! Well, I know why. Almost certainly someone driving by spreadsheet, meaning that the egg white binder is probably $0.01 per patty and a vegan binder would be $0.015 to $0.02 per patty and if you asked them why you'd simple hear an answer without a scale applied to it, "The vegan binder is between 50% and double the cost of the egg white." But ok, raise the price by $0.25 per pack of 4 patties and make them vegan!
Doing compassionate work. Great stuff!

i'm not buying anything with the term Natural Flavors on the label any more. i first noticed this with the Rice-A-Roni brand of rice products. i've never eaten any of them since going vegetarian back in '88 but my mom does. it seemed like overnight, the labels went from listing whatever animal flavoring it contained, chicken, beef or shrimp to "Natural Flavorings". you don't suddenly retool your manufacturing process and recipes like that in this day and age. beef, chicken and fish are 'natural flavors' to meat eaters. lol
I was told when working in an industrial kitchen that the L-cystiene was not just a conditioning agent but also an antifungal. That it's being used to prolong shelf life. And I'd seen the difference in shelf life when the small batch company supplying or baked goods forgot it in random batches. Honestly there's plenty of ways to get human hair that's not exploitative but I'm not sure that's they're how you get industrial amounts. As far as reducing food waste if it was collected from humans in a way that didn't exploit them I wouldn't be against it's use.
Beware any product that advertises suitability for ‘vegetarians’.
Girl, nothing is vegan. I used to work at a vineyard, and if you knew how many spiders go through the crusher and contribute their hemolymph to the wine, you would be shocked. It's not a few here and there. It's millions. I'm willing to bet that wine WITHOUT spider blood would taste almost unrecognizable to most people. And that's not even considering all the bunnies that were trapped, deer and wild pigs that were shot, and small birds that died tangled in the anti-pest netting. All to protect the fields for a "vegan" product. Those were the organic fields. The conventional fields killed all those animals, plus millions of bugs, plus all of the amphibians downstream in that watershed. Then the fish and aquatic birds, and eventually the sea creatures when the pesticide stream gets to the sea. The most compassionate thing you can do is raise a fat happy pig, slaughter it in the winter, and live off of it for the rest of the year. One death, of an animal whose happiness and health you could personally oversee. Working in the agricultural arena sure opened my eyes.
I agree that agriculture sadly contributes to the death of animals in multiple ways. Vegans strive to omit animal products to the extent it is practicable, and sadly there is no practicable lifestyle I know of at present time that can be sustained without industries that harm animals. However, I think the very obvious flaw in your logic is that by raising a pig you are only killing one animal. Every calorie of meat produced requires roughly 15 calories of feed. And animal feed is produced via agriculture, meaning that you are essentially causing 15x the damage when raising an animal for feed than had you just consumed plants to begin with. Not to mention that the average American does not have the time, land, or resources to raise livestock, and that a single pig does not produce the number of calories or the diversity of nutrients to sustain an adult for a year.
Processed food is bad all the way around. Even vegan processed food is something I try to avoid. I saw chocolate Twinkies in the store the other day, and I read the label. Not only does it have egg whites but it also has tallow. And it also has hydrogenated tallow!
I dig your style, Very Vegan Val. Keep it very vegan.
I appreciate that!
Thank you 💚
Sugar can be non vegan. Because of the purifying/filtering process.
Because of that, it's one of the few ingredients I ALWAYS buy organic!
@@veryveganval I’m buying more organic produce now. Particularly grains, when I can.
Depends on country. For example, I live in Poland, we have beetroot sugar here and it is not refined with bones.
I have never seen this mentioned as a part of the process outside of America, regardless of how many times I have looked it up. Sugar here in Australia is vegan.
As someone with alpha-gal allergy, it was a big eye opener how many mammal products are hidden in US foods. Alpha-gal is in all mammals except humans and great apes.
Pepsi probably not vegan because sugars are filtered through bone char, with an alpha gal allergy I have found out most undesirable foods have a food allergy for me in them. I know we can do better but our priorities are jumbled.
@@paulabarnes5613 interestingly it's Diet Pepsi that's not vegan, and as it doesn't contain sugar that can't be the cause. A common hypothesis is it could be that gelatin is used during processing, but who knows.
I am vegan wholefood & rarely eat junk food. Occasionally (once or twice yearly), I would have strawberry 🍓 Starburst candies … Until I found out that the tartness of the candies comes from beetle anus extract. 🤮 Well! Needless to say, I no longer eat Starbursts candies.
Wow Pepsi blew my mind lol, the ingredients list is why i went raw vegan, least i can be sure a vegetable is vegan 😂
Chef woo got me
@@floydsghost what about them? They're not a product I'm familiar with.
The frosted mini wheats have gelatin for the same reason pop-tarts do. The frosting “needs” the gelatin to help it set hard.
WOW!!! 🤯 Thank you so much for sharing this information! Yikes!
I was surprised that Jiffy blueberry muffin mix had lard in it
Oh wow! I would have expected some milk powder, but not lard!
It may be palm oil lard which is cheaper than fat lard
@@savegraysoncats I've never heard the term palm oil lard. Typically it's called shortening when it comes from a plant, and lard when it comes from a pig.
@savegraysoncats I'm actually finding mixed information online. Some list the ingredients as vegetable shortening and some say lard. Maybe it depends where they're selling it. I'm in the U.S.
@veryveganval they call palm oil shortening lard. I live in KY. Don't use lard but the buckets of lard at walmart say palm oil
easier just to be vegetarian and try your best
Best for health as well as ethics is to avoid processed foods altogether (which includes foods that have additives). And to NEVER go to MacDonald’s or those other fast food places.
As a vegetarian, a person could still consume cholesterol, still promoting baby calves to be removed from their moms to promote milk for humans who don't need it.
Will try them with the regular beans and brown rice. Thanks!
Hope you enjoy
I was eating Planters dry roasted peanuts last week and was sorry to see they contained gelatin.
Peanuts are just such an unexpected place to find it.
This will all get so much worse when regulations are stripped, and big ag has carte blanche. And….check the glue on your shoes……
The sour cream and onion potato chips in the prepackaged section are vegan (as of the last time i got them). They were made with nutritional yeast. And sooo good!!!
@@tvaa193 wait what??? I'll have to go back to IKEA ASAP!
@veryveganval I forgot also sometimes, in the fridge section, they will have "caviar" that's actually made out of seaweed pearls and its vegan even though it's not labeled as such.
