The much maligned greed of Hasbro/WOTC
This has been a banner year for Hasbro showing off corporate greed and short sightedness with great aplomb so with the news of them laying off 1100 folks right before Christmas, I have a few things to get off my chest.

    I always chuckle when I hear the `history`of T&T... as I was there, I bought the rule book when it first came out in 75, and have played it ever since. I remember the occasional article about the game coming out each month in White Dwarf (though they were rare) and sitting in on a game put on by Ken. For me the game is not OLD school or retro, its simpy the game I have always played and still do 50 years on. The same applies to original D&D, its the game I picked up back in 74 and have played ever since :-)

    For me, the benefit of a generic system is for running campaigns that are hyper specific and not easily slot into systems that are specialized Dnd is great for Tolkien fantasy Shadowrun is awesome if you want to do cyberpunk fantasy But what if you want to do a stranger things esque game Fantasy elements invading into a contemporary ( or period piece) small town setting in the real world. That's the benefit of knowing how to play a universal system or two Obviously diffrent ones have diffrent strengths Genesys is my go to for most things, but fate seems cool for like a one shot or something

      and that's something i covered as well, I do thin that universal systems can work to build that game world that doen't exist BUT it's also still about theme and pacing, if say ypu wanted an RPG to be based on clone highm, Toon or Teenagers from outerspace wouyld make more sense than Hero. a game based on The Boys may benefit from the Hero System's granularity, or maybe a better fit for another supers game. It also really depends on what you are trying to bring out of the story

      Correct, the game is more complex than most as it was the fashion for RPGs at the time as was percentile based games. I played AD&D in the early 80s but stopped playing by the late 80s. Back then I'd vaguely heard of Tunnels & Trolls as a "lighter" game (a bit condescendingly labelled as suitable for younger players) I've since thought of returning to paper RPGs, but looking through the old D&D books I realize what a daunting time consuming task it would be. And my memory isn't as good as it was. So I think T &T fits the bill nicely for some old school paper gaming.

    Corporations are NOT your friends; very true. However, if a corporation is well managed, they want their customers to be happy; they make more money if they meet their customers wants and needs. IF a corporation is well managed, which Hasbro clearly is NOT. They put out a bunch of crap nobody wants, stupidly create artificial scarcity on the things fans DO want, and make it impossible for large segments of their fan base to obtain the things they want. All three of those are 100% in Hasbro's direct control and they keep making the same mistakes over and over again and thinking firing people fixes it.

    To your point about George Lucas' script for Star Wars ep IV vs the movie itself, there's an entire documentary called How Star Wars was Saved in the Editing Room. I think this still fits into your argument about how the particular media that a story is told through changes HOW that story can be told. But I just wanted to add that because it may also explain how what Rob Reiner said about Lucas could be valid just by reading the script and before seeing the finished product. Great video! Starfleet Battles is about ten times better a game than either of these two games. Also, the more complex a game is, it definitely has more tactical depth and therefore a much better game where skill and ability is prized. I am sorry, but a very simple game is going to allow more luck to come into play and allow not dumber, but less intellectually inclined people to win. Games are dumbed down today because, frankly, they need to sell to people with less patience or ability to comprehend a complex rules set. Warhammer 40k, for example, is "wargaming" for dummies....😂

    • @NerdRageAgainsttheMachine
      @NerdRageAgainsttheMachine 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      While i do enjoy SFB as well , i disagree that complexity makes a better game, or makes a game more tactically deep. Chess for example does not need reams of rule nooks or supplements to be an engaging game. And even Warhammer often gets out of hand with supplement after supplement adding complexity and ignoring good game design. I don't personally believe in the odea of a game being "too hard' but as the point is to have fun, I do believe in the idea of asking if the juoce is worth the squeeze.

    • @patiencezero-xc9zl
      @patiencezero-xc9zl 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I said a much better game where tactical depth and skill are prized. The less complex a game usually means the more dice rolling in the wargaming world, or as in the case of Chess, a mere exercise in memory. I point to what Warhammer 40K has become relative its first incarnations......which were true wargames, and not a skeletal frame used to move over-priced painted models around a table. The game is simply Yhatzee! More tactical depth allows for more surprises and move combinations. Don't take my word for it, take Bobby Fisher's. He believed that Chess was indeed simply a memory exercise versus a true intellectual contest. This is why he favored a style of Chess that randomized the back pieces for every game, thereby forcing opponents to think on their feet without pre-concocted move sequences. Thus, increasing the games complexity made for a greater intellectual challenge. Oh, and this is why no Chess grand master will ever beat a computer and can generally only stalemate one.

    I am a model builder--not a wargamer. I started model building as a kid in the 60s with the old Airfix 1/76 scale, then graduated to the more realistic 1/72, then 1/48 and finally the most realistic 1/35 scale as an adult. I also have armor and toy soldiers (like Conte) at 1/32 scale, and finally, the ULTIMATE SOLDIER and 21st Century Toys--1/18 airplanes and soldiers! I do like the 1/56 Rubicon models but am hesitant to start collecting this "odd" scale. I HATE wargaming figures, like the 28 mm Bolt Action, etc., because they look so unrealistic, with their huge, pumpkin heads, hands and weapons. Why do they not try to make wargaming products more realistic, like the Rubicon 1/56 line? They will generate a whole lot more interest and money!

    • @NerdRageAgainsttheMachine
      @NerdRageAgainsttheMachine 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mostly out of tradition. Most minis war games before were either 15mm ( roughly 1/100, like flames of war, ) or 25mm ( 1/72 ) but often sculptors have slowly added to the scale for their ease of sculpting/ modeling with most minis games sitting around 28mm to 32mm. There are a few games that talk about how to scale measurements to make other scales work from 6mm to 54mm. But as Warhammer as probably the most popular minis game sits in that range it is what wargaming customers are used to. Additionally larger models like 1/35 are more mass to store/transport which is an arguement against them I have heard from gamers before. RPGs such as D&D also embraced 28mm from their wargaming roots, so roleplayers also prefer this scale as they mesh well, (i.E. I can use my Warhammer fantasy orcs on my D&D map if I want.).

    Sorry to hear you had a hospital stay; I hope you are well and wish you to continue to be well in your future. I think it's awesome that you remember your first viewing of Star Wars at the drive in. I don't remember seeing it the first time (in 1977): I do remember telling my brother that the competing film "Orca" (about a killer whale) was better :) I do remember my first time seeing Empire and Jedi. Who needs another critique of Kathleen Kennedy! The chief 'crime' of Disney's Star Wars era is that Disney disregard all of the universe that came before Disney's ownership. The attention that LucasFilm placed in unifying the various authors and stories is what made the Star Wars universe spectacular. While LucasFilm owned the IP, all authors and all stories had to achieve logical consistency with what came before and what was supposed to happen after the events we see in the various movies. LucasFilm had stories for what happened between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back that explained for example how the rebels arrived at Hoth after the apparent victory over the empire at Yavin. Disney shit on all of it to make their story free from constraint. And the reason they did that is because Disney was never interested in story-telling: they were only interested in property and market share. (JJ Abrams likewise shit on all of the Star Trek universe when he was given the opportunity). A person destroys accepted history at great peril to the society that relies on that history to define itself. Disney wanted the loyal fan base of the people who define themselves as fans of the Star Wars universe. But Disney did not want to bother with understanding that fan base. They just wanted its money and its market power. And because they didn't care about the history of the Star Wars universe, Disney destroyed that history without ever recognizing that it was doing something both terrible to the fans they wanted and destructive to the goals they set (to be profitable). It is symptomatic of the era in which we live that Disney mostly blames the fans for its own failures. The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker are already quintessential examples to show someone of a Mary Sue and of a Maguffin: these films, regardless of the era in which they were produced, are examples of the worst way to write characters and to write stories. Whatever production value they may contain, whatever technological innovations may be laudable, the writing is the absolute nadir of the Star Wars saga. It is the finest example one can find for new script writers of what to avoid.
