Goodbye to the old piano
The piano in the back room at Church has outlived its usefulness and is due to be scrapped. I went to take some pictures and serenade it into eternity with a ditty from Dud and Pete.

Goodbye to the Micra

September 2023. A ride on the Koblenz cable car to the fortress on the opposite bank of the Rhine was a good excuse to take a series of snaps of the city from above. The town has been ruined by londoners moving in ...
I was a technician refurbishing telex machines mostly doing the Sagem TX 20, and the T2000, also some of the Siemens teleprinter, back in the 1980s.
Thank you for that stirred up few memories for me I was born & many early years in Hitchin my grandfather had his office in the town centre pt barker & sons my grandfather being Philip Townsend barker & uncle John barker I spent many an hour at my great grandmother’s house at the top of windmill hill & went to school at kingshot briefly then stagenhoe park
Thanks for sharing your memories, Chris. I've only lived in Hitchin since 1977 so I'm learning all the time.
Vintage 'Job Killer' nice 😂
My God, how Telecom grossly ripped off businesses with these and other tech they had a monopoly over. No wonder we could never compete with the world, simply appalling. 🤬
I remember seeing them on television a d in the local paper
Some relatives of bob hope lived in hitchin. He used to visit them once a year
That's right. Richard Whitmore wrote the script for a Hitchin Historical Society film about Bob Hope's Hitchin connections. I think it's on one of the DVDs the HHS published.
And to think this mechanical switch gear is all there was for decades. Isles and isles of these things in buildings the sizes of warehouses. Absolutely incredible. Now you can fit an entire exchange of this era into a kerbside cabinet the size of a large refrigerator.
interesting to see streets i pass everyday so long ago . thank you for making this
Hi Sam. Im after a little help. Ive got a 332L GPO phone. Ive done a little research and found the dial is a '10'. Ive also found the schematic on the rear of the base cover. I have build a hidden door as a bookcase with the phone on the shelf. I want to be able use the phone as a switch to open the bookcase when i dial a number (ideally zero) i have a background in electronics so am happy with the wiring of a relay once i can use the dial as the switch. Any ideas? I hope that makes sense?

It might not set the internet on fire but, thank you for making the time and effort to provide such a well illustrated and well explained video..
Thanks for that. I really must get round to doing the companion item on the slipping cam dial.
2000 type. Not Strowger.
See earlier comments. In this context 'Strowger' refers to a mechanism that goes up and round as in Strowger's original patent en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strowger_switch. 2000 type is a British Post Office designation of one particular design. Aren't the switches on the right 4000 type anyway?
I miss the 1980's.
I lived in Stopsley during WW2 with my mother, my father was serving in the army. We would catch a green Eastern National bus to Hitchin market to buy a few vegetables that were not on ration. The bus on the way home always had a problem going up Offley hill and would sometimes stall. All the men would have to get off the bus as they could not start fully loaded. The men would then walk up the hill and get on the bus at the top.Happy days!
Good to hear from you, Pat. Of course I wasn't born till 1949 and didn't move to Hitchin till 1977 so this a all news to me.

I expect the producer thought it a good idea at the time. Like you, I don't share that view!
But I like the telephone switching technique @@SamHallas1949
I'm sold. Do I need to travel to Australia to pick up a Computerphone, or are they available closer to me? I'm in California.
You'll need to travel back in time too! Got a Delorean to hand?
it probably wont be its last ride. when my vxr got cat n written off it got taken to a auction its just gone up so hopefully someone will buy it and fix it.
Possibly. However, broken up: good engine & gearbox, 4 doors, seats, etc. it might recover a fair percentage when sold for parts.
Hope you were insured
Naturally! The insurers settled for pretty much book value.
@@SamHallas1949 good
Excellent video demonstration of the GPO Pulse Regenerator, supported by the excellent recently published article in the Telecommunications Heritage Journal Winter 2023 edition. Fully agree that it is good to restore these excellent examples of electromechanical switchgear related to automatic telephony of the Strowger era. Well done!
the bosses office is well stocked with liquor!
Hi Sam. Did Margaret live at Sandleheath? Mark
Yes. Indeed she did. She lived in a house called Richmond off Main Road. email me if you want further info, sam.hallas@gmail.com
The caption is incorrect. There is one 2000 type and three SE50 type group selectors. The final selector is an SE50 type selector. Stowger selectors are different.
What was your point? The caption just says there's a mix, not which is what. We use Strowger as a generic to distinguish from rotary, crossbar, panel, digital, etc.
@@SamHallas1949 Thank you for your time and interest in placing a comment, Sam. It wasn't meant to create any offence or to get anyone offside. It was meant to point out that, Strowger exchanges used Strowger switches. Consequently, at least in my part of the world, exchanges that used 2000 and SE50 switches were referred to as SxS exchanges and those that used Strowger switches as Strowger exchanges. At the end of the day, it's not a big point. Great video, by the way, Sam.
I worked there when it was Poundland
Born in 1991 live in Hitchin, I feel nostalgic 😌
Why has the current tenor been recast?
I don't know. Perhaps @jasnfinlay has some more information
Fantastic videos, ended up watched part 2 first, Amazing to see all of the changes i wouldn't have ever known about without seeing this video, Thank you👍
Glad you enjoyed it! Get out and take some more pictures. Today's snaps are tomorrow's history.
Coding made things so easy
Very interesting. I’m Spanish and I was in Hitchin for a few days always in September in 1987 to 1993. Always in the home of my bigs friends Dennis and Pauline Day in Kingswood Ave. I’ve got wonderfull souvenirs of my dear Hitchin, my prefer town of England.
that cinema was stunning, what a shame
I love this piece. Thank you!
i have owned one for several years.Have never fired it up. I see there are now aftermarket power supplies and video converters..must get them and see if will fire up..
Nice video.
Great - I hope the concert with the orchestra went as well and joyfully. Well done both of you ! One should never underestimate the achievements of the 'accompanist' ...
A most enjoyable presentation of the small town celebration. Wish I was there. Thank you, Sam.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Whatever happened to Telex? It seemed to disappear about the same time as Telecom itself.
BT discontinued the Telex service in the UK in 2008. Over to you for when it went in Oz.
The market for Telex in Australia collapsed in about 1984, for two reasons:- 1. The Sagem was an absolute heap of junk. About the most unreliable product ever made; After getting a bad reputation with the original Sagem TX20, they switched to a more advanced Sagem 2000, which was even worse. 2. The arrival of cheap fax machines from Japan - a fax machine is far quicker, easier, and cheaper to use than a telex machine - and you can fax diagrams. Telecom/Telstra continued to offer Telex to a declining niche market, eg hotels and travel agents, for many years afterwards, but businesses generally were not interested.
An Out Tray marked Telex is a must.
Working for Telecom Australia in late 1980's I had daily use of Telex 2000. Fabulous beasts of their day.
Would you by any chance have the manual ? I've got one of these here (Sagem TX35) however it refuses to do anything and goes into locked mode after succesful booting , due to no telex line. I imagine there's a setting, or jumper, to make this thing at leats do something without a telex line ? Any help appreciated
Taking us into 21st century - Telex 2000 & push button DTMF telephones.
Why was there 313s going down there??
This was 2013. That was the current rolling stock on the line at that time.

Great video!!! Lived here in 2004/05, nostalgia
Wonderful video. I really miss the town. Great work Sam
What year was the demolition. I am thinking 84/85 Pretty sure i was at secondary school when it went. Great clip.
Do yous know where the tenor went? Did it get scrapped, or is it still in the tower? Or did the Keltek Trust get it?
No I don't. The ringers at St Mary's could tell you. I understand there's no sentimentality in the ringing world and bells are routinely melted down for re-casting.
@@SamHallas1949 It doesn't seem to have worked out, now the remaining big bell is being recast!! 🤷🤷
Is that so? I haven't seen the St Mary's ringers for some time so haven't heard.
@@SamHallas1949 Yes the tenor is being recast. I am unsure of the reasoning, but I think it will be made slightly heavier.
Thanks Jason. I must find out if the ringers are going to do a peal for the coronation.
Amazing footage :) thanks for sharing
