Frank’s Model Aviation Workshop
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 31 ธ.ค. 2006
This channel is dedicated to my love of building Flying Model Airplanes. Whether it’s Stick and Tissue kits, or Radio Controlled, I’ve always loved building airplanes.
I started building Stick and Tissue kits when I was around 10 years old. My dad was into Control Line Airplanes, and he inspired me to learn how to build, and cover airplane models. He taught me everything I needed to know to get started, and I’ve been building, and flying model airplanes on and off for over 4 decades.
I started building and flying RC Airplanes in the early 1990’s. I was never into ARF airplanes. The kit built airplanes always looked so much better to me.
My favorite kits to build are Carl Goldberg kits. They go together pretty quick, and fly great. I’ll be building a few Top Flite Gold Edition Warbirds in the near future on my channel as well as a few more Goldberg kits.
If you like this type of content, please like, and subscribe to my channel, and share my videos. Thanks!

Hi Carl In previous videos in the Ultimate build series, I noticed that you already built an F4U Corsair. I assume you still have the plans for this plane. Is there any way you could share them with me in pdf format? Congratulations on your videos, your work is excellent and very detailed, you explain the steps to follow very clearly. Thanks, and best regards.
Thanks, but I haven’t built the Corsair yet.
You need a wind break for your microphone.
Where is the next video. I used to build a Goldberg kit, from opening the box Friday evening to ready for final sand on Sunday evening. :) I have many Goldberg kits under the old belt. Each one had some issues. I had a cub, one set of ribs seemed to be miss die cut, they had a bit of under chamber airfoil, the others were fine. Spent time glue balsa strips to them then sanding to the Formica template I made. On a Super Chipmunk, the tail die crushed pieces were so bad, I ended up cutting new ones. On a Sky tiger, one fuse side was miss cut, it looked like it was die cut, then moved about 4 inches, then cut again. After fixing the issues, all of them flew very well. The Super Chipmunks were a dream to fly. I flew a Jr Tiger so much, I wore through the axle part of the main gear, the other side was about 70% worn through. Flying of a dirt field, the plastic wheels sanded the piano wire every time the rolled. I agree as noted below, the lack of shear webs on this plane. I would run 1/16" shear webs on one side at least 3/4 out, if not all the way and then 1/32" shear on the other side 1/2 way out. I have boxed in with 1/32" balsa, really surprising how strong it is. This is one plane I wish I had built and flown back in the day. I like the Sukhoi so much more than the Edges, Lasers, Sbach's, they all looks very similar. Buzz.
The next episode is still in production. I know understand why people do winter builds. I’m having trouble finding time to get back at it, but rest assured, there will be a complete build series in the end. 👍
BE ADVISED!! This is NOT a complete build as I had hoped. There are only two videos so the wing isn't even completed. I hope he finishes someday.
Be advised!! I see your comment, and the build is exactly where it was when episode 2 was finished. It’ll be finished someday. I’m a RC builder mainly. Control Line was dad’s thing. He built this Nobler, and I thought I’d give it a go.
@@FranksModelAviationWorkshop I was hoping you would see my comment. I wish you had made that comment when you decided not to finish the Nobler.
@ramtek2702 I’m gonna finish it. Just not high on my to do list right now.
I might start a fresh build series on the green box Nobler when I get back to it. I have another kit yet.
@@FranksModelAviationWorkshop Why not sell it to me. I'll finish it.
Dude its pronounced (ass-uh-tone)...
Me dummy. 😂
Hey Frank how come you didnt put a bevel on your elevators so you would have been able to get much better throw? It looks to me like you arent going to have much throw the way it is right now. Thats very necessary for rolling herriers and such ... nice job sealing the hinge lines though.... that can be tough to get right. You got that trim iron tho and that makes it way easier I bet.... I dont have a trim iron. Boy I sure want one tho.
Thanks! I set the throws to max like all my other Ultimates. They had plenty of throw. Besides, I don’t even know what a rolling harrier is. 😂
Great video Frank. I love these SU26 kits. Built several back when Tower had the great Combo, motor & Kit deals. Much better selection of motors available today. Too bad Kits are going out. Terry&ThePirates South Florida
i find the design without spar doublers to be very brittle with those two spars being separated only by soft balsa wood. at least two or three pieces along the wing length
Guy from last video is right. Music volume is to loud. I was just falling asleep like you were Bob Ross. Then the music woke me up.
😂
Sure seems to be an overly difficult and complicated wing to build. Kidos for your techniques.
Thanks! It’s definitely not the typical Goldberg build style that I’m used to seeing.
Awesome Frank .
Thank you!
Frank, the Corsair
What about the Corsair? 😁
R U going to build it?
@HenryTyson yes. It’ll be on the channel when it gets built. I have no definite start date though.
That's good to hear because I have one, thanks
I could be wrong, but didn't these models have washout built into the wings??
I don’t think so. Nowhere in the plans, or the instructions does it state that.
@FranksModelAviationWorkshop I get it. I just think it's strange that you had to modify so many ribs. This would have been a pretty big screw-up on the company, and I'm sure it would have been corrected. I dont think it will be a big deal anyways.
@alwaysflying6540 lucky, I only had to modify the number 2 run in the end. I thought I showed that in the video, but I could be wrong. It all turned out ok in the end.
hi Frank brilliant video, if I could just say, with the issue of the ribs fitting, if I was you I would trim the tab to fit in with your straight edge ruler , your on the ball using your straight edge, let that be your gauge for building a straight and true wing , thanks again Frank for your videos, it's interesting to see you deal with every building issue as I enjoy building balsa aircraft aswell, from Tony from Bedfordshire, England
Thanks. The straight edge just seems logical to me.
@@FranksModelAviationWorkshopGreat work Frank .
Thank you!
I want to thank you for putting up good quality videos and awesome builds, thank you for sharing all the tricks and tips.
You’re welcome.
Appreciate the blow by blow Frank
Frank, so the servos bottom out in the tray so what did u raise them with and besides fiberglass what can u finish balsa with for a smooth glassy look like u have on your bird? Thanks Frank
I used 1/8” ply to raise the servos. Clear monokote, and paint.
Thank U
I use sheetrock as my build board too and thumbs get a little sore pushing those t pins. Can't find pin drivers but does anyone know of a decent 3D print for one? EDIT: Found one from makerworld that I will print to try out.
I admire your patience. Awesome job!
Thank you.
The 5/16x3/8 wood sticks for the gas tank platform,,how are they fastened and to what.
Their CAd to the firewall.
@@FranksModelAviationWorkshop Thanks
Did you CA or epoxy your standoffs in place
No stand offs on the DLE 20RA
Your patience is impressive. The interplane strut came out great. Mine wasn't even "half way decent". Then my 30 year old sealing iron quit, so thanks to one day delivery (from an unnamed source) I will do the other one today and RE-DO the less than half way decent one that I botched yesterday. This time I will pay closer attention to the relief cuts and small slivers of covering (shown in time-laps) to make mine more wrinkle free. Thanks so much for your contributions Frank!
Thanks man. Glad you’re getting something out of the content.
simulator is your friend, things will be easier in real life when you have lots of simulator time
Yes sir.
Question Frank, the aileron joiner wire, is it epoxied in the 1/8 hole and the groove you made?
Yes, at the very end of the build, after the paint is applied.
Thank u
Frank, Please! I enjoy the dialogue. I can learn a lot. Then the music kicks in and wakes the neighbors. Can we pull it back a little please? Thanks.
😂 What are you listening to my content with? A 1500 watt surround sound system? 😂
@@FranksModelAviationWorkshop Doesn't everybody? 😆
@@waynemiller6070I know I do, but I like waking up the neighbors. 😂
Hi im wondering if 400 canadian is the right price for this kit in new condition? The one im looking at is the 61 inch wing 60 powered
That’s one heck of a deal if it’s complete. I paid way more than that for mine.
The one im looking at has the word Corsair in red also it has other red writing on the front of the box. The decals are different as well. There is the number 86 on the side of the fuselage with the star flags outlined in red and jap kill flags under the cockpit Also the TF logo is in black and red on the front of the box
I have moved five times since I started building my biplane over 25 years ago. I can't believe it has survived all of that. But this video series has really gotten me motivated to finish. Thank you Frank.
That is amazing. I’m glad I motivated you. Good luck with your biplane build.
Attention to detail is above and beyond.
Love your channel.
Thank you
Frank put some monokote on that missing fingernail. Lmao. LOVE YOUR CHANNEL. keep those videos coming sir.
It’s not missing yet. Man, did that ever hurt! 😂🤣
Dude!!!! Where did that plane come from??? That thing is awesome11111
I knew a guy that had one he was selling.
You like using those mylar & fiberglass CA hinges? I hate those things they always eventually rip out. Im a big fan of the 1/8th inch black robart brand pin hinges and the dubro flat steel pinned hinges work good but they are hard to install properly. The robart pin hinges are the easiest, strongest and longest lasting. Now what I really find awesome are those piano style lomg rod removable hidden hinges but those are very rarely used. I only see them on the super hifh end giant scale planes. That thing being a stunt plane or 3d type plane I wouldnt wanna use those ca hinges but alot of guys swear by them so youre in a big boat with al9t of guys that are all better at this than me....lol
I’ve never had a plane long enough to see a CA hinge fail.
Alot of guys over glue ca hinges making them brittle and fail. Two drops of extra thin ca is more than enough. I myself don't use ca anymore. I use pva glue with excellent results. I wish I would have switched 15 years ago. Only downside is it takes longer. I glue the hinges in the control surface then wait a few hours then come back and install them. They move effortlessly and I get tight gaps with full deflection
@@alwaysflying6540 That's probably why mine rip out then.Because I use way more than two drops
The directions on the pack of CA hinges I use say 6 drops per side, so that’s what I’ve been doing.
@FranksModelAviationWorkshop it's way too much my friend. If you use the extra thin you can do two drops a side. My flying style is scale aerobatic and medium to hard 3d with airframes up to 73 inches for that style hinge. To this day I have not had one let go. I've also used them on very fast planes with the same results. Think about this 🤔 put two of your fingers together and drop a single drop between them. Now drop two lol. I bet you didn't even drop the first lol. Now think about dropping 6. Do you makes you feel comfortable. In the end it's your model I'm only sharing my experiences just like you do:)
Beautifully done mate
Thank you
I learn a lot from your teaching. Thanks.
Here comes a beautiful model airplane that will be built by a specialist. These will be videos rich in details, well worth watching.
Thanks. Let’s hope so. 👍
for the dent. Wet paper towel and set it on the dent and then put a hot Monocoat iron on it to make steam and it will pop right out
Yes sir! I’ll do that at the final sand before covering.
My late father taught me this same trick. It was for smaller imperfections, and he used spit lol. You can also use a needle to get at dents under covering
The next one I build of the CG planes the Extra and the Sukhoi I think I will do airfoiled tail surfaces. Nice building by the way.
That would be neat to see. Thank you.
Wish I could get a virgin kit again I built my last one in about 1958 with Fox 35 power. I lost it due Bell rank cut out issue.
They come up on eBay from time to time.
1am
I don't think we get ocd. I think we just get better at building and want a better product. I spent the better part of the day fabricating spars out for my new scratch build today. I got a very nice fit and everything lined up. You must have gotten a Friday afternoon kit! I didn't have any of the problems when i built my 1st gen kit. Mike c
Well, mine is the second gen with some laser cut parts. The die cut tail pieces were too far off for my liking. Some of the parts in this kit are stamped, “Made in Italy”. Ever see that in a Goldberg kit before?
@FranksModelAviationWorkshop no I have not. Man that is weird.
hi frank good videos, good to see every step, i was given a top flite f86 bearcat kit for my birthday a 60 size two stroke engine size , i didn't follow the instructions and messed up the wing construction, my mate took it off but couldn't control it properly, i still regret not carefully following the instructions just like you do , anyway thanks again, from Tony from Bedfordshire England
Thank you. I feel some folks need videos like I put out to better understand how these things go together. Too bad about your Bearcat.
I have a gen 1, waiting to see how the gen 2 gear is built :) Anyone have a gen 2 they won't be building?
It’s gonna be a while for that. The wing build will be around four episodes I believe. I just started it.
The only difference between gen 1 and gen 2 is the gear placement. I beefed up the area in front of the wing for the landing gear. If I remember I used 1/4 inch 6 ply with 1/2 inch tri stock. My gen 1 is 10 years old and is never given me problems. Hope this helps. Mike
@thercbarn5001 yeah, I don’t see an issue with where the gear are installed. If you know how to land, it doesn’t matter. This gen two kit was available for a decent price, so I had to snag it up. Thanks for the info.
@@FranksModelAviationWorkshop the biggest issue with the landing gear in the wing was if it broke during a bad or rough landing is it would damage the spar.
You're the Bob Ross of kit builders.
You’re not the first person I’ve heard that from. 😂👍
I’m Looking forward to this build. I have one of these in my collection as well. I remember when this kit came out. They were showing it off at a local rc airshow.
It’s an awesome plane. I just need to overcome a hurtle I encountered while preparing to build the wing. I discuss in the video. Shouldn’t be a big problem though. Maybe. 😂
Great detailed video! Learning lots from your videos, was just wondering if you had a part number or proper name to that tee pin applicator/helper tool ? Those tee pins definitely hurts the thumbs after awhile lol
Thanks. That T-pin pusher inner is made by great planes. They’re discontinued. Might try eBay.
just a thanks from a fellow balsa aircraft builder , looking forward to taking the build journey with you , must say your a very good quality builder , im enjoying your build so far , i can almost smell that cyano glue , that makes the eyes sting , thanks frank mate from Tony from Bedfordshire England ,
Glad you enjoy the content. CA burns the eyes, if it’s fresh. 😂
NICE ASSEMBLY!....as you said it came out perfect!
Thank you
“I know what you’re thinking, I don’t want to hear it” 😂 Nice work Frank! Enjoyed the first video.
Haha. Thanks
Not sure why you didn't contact the supplier of the model and complain about missing and broken parts and have them either supply replacement parts or replace the model? It shouldn't be down to you to find the money to fix problems with a kit? Confused
The main reason I didn’t do that, is because Carl Goldberg Models hasn’t existed in decades. There’s nobody to complain to. When you buy discontinued vintage kits, it’s a given risk you take that the kit might have missing, or broken parts. No big deal really. I’ve been building these kits forever. 👍
@@FranksModelAviationWorkshop That makes sense, I hadn't viewed as far as the point in the video where you made that point before I commented. Thank you for taking the time to explain. If you are looking for the perfect kit I can highly recommend valueplanes, they are very expensive but superb quality , I particularly like their miles hawk major kit, it's 1irst class
I wish Carl Goldberg was still around.... those were the days 🥴
Looking good Frank 😊
Thank you
