Winchester New (On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry) - Arr. Noel Rawsthorne - practice!
The melody for this hymn has been around since the 17th century, with records suggesting it first appeared in the "Musikalisches Handbuch der geistlichen Melodien", by Georg Wittwe. Opinion then appears to divide with some attributing the harmony to the Wesley's, and others to William Henry Monk.
Whatever the case, it is perhaps one of the more recognisable hymns used at the feast celebrating the Baptism of Jesus, and also to the words 'Ride on, ride on in majesty' during the Lent/Passiontide season.
Noel Rawsthorne's accessible and enjoyable reharmonisation rounds out a fantastic hymn. I trust you enjoy!

I have played Down Ampney on many, many occasions - and recording it once or twice too (th-cam.com/video/584vvdSogrE/w-d-xo.html). I find it's one of those pieces you can get something new and enjoyable from each time you hear, sing or play it, and Rawsthorne's alternate last verse is simply sublime. I truly hope it brings a smile to your face today. Performed on the Salisbury Cathedral samples...

More commonly sung to 'Bright the vision that delighted', Laus Deo was composed by English organist Richard Redhead. Redhead lived during the late 19th century, starting as a chorister, and then going on to become organist and choirmaster at All Saints Church, London (originally Margaret Chapel). Some 35 hymns are still accessible of Redhead's today. The Rawsthone last verse took a bit of work,...

This beautiful hymn was composed by Sir George C. Martin MVO, an English organist and composer who lived in the late 19th to early 20th century. A student and then successor of John Stainer, he held the post of organist of St. Paul's Cathedral London until he passed in 1916. Aside from composing in excess of 80 hymn tunes, including St. Helen which perhaps is his best known, it is said he also ...

Armstrong's sublime descant for this beautiful carol is one of my core memories as being a young cathedral chorister. Another of the iconic and well-loved English carol, and again, Ledger's descant brings back joyous memories of chorister days at St. David's Cathedral Hobart, Tasmania. I agree with your comments. For almost a century in England the C of E once only authorized one carol to be sung which was 'While shepherds watched......' because it was purely scriptural, however they then permitted this carol, but with Charles Wesley's original first lines 'Hark how all the welkin rings'.

Noel Rawsthorne masterfully arranged this and loads of other pieces for organ, maintaining the essence of the piece(s) while also ensuring they were accessible to newer & intermediate players. We lost an incredible musician and composer when he passed. The lyrics to the piece roughly translate to 'Come, sweet death' - while the music sounds beautiful, the words, almost prayerfully, are inviting death and blessed rest to come.

It's such a fun and robust piece - I love how the theme comes through in the different sections, but then concludes with a rumbly version of Melita :) Riley did an amazing job with this composition

Sounds great (and I learnt something in terms of the significance of this hymn to the Anglican Church for this last week).

It's one of those which will always have a soft spot in my heart due to my dad's ministry - the words also are incredibly powerful :)

I like it - at times it seems to resemble "Let All the World, in Every Corner Sing".

I had similar thoughts too when I first heard it! Riley did an amazing job with this piece :)
