No. 413(GR) ‘Tusker’ Squadron was formed at Stranraer, Scotland, on 1 July 1941 with Catalinas. During March 1942, the squadron passed under the command of W/C J.L. Meanwhile the first operational flight from their new base was carried out on the night of 2/3 April by F/L Thomas. 349 and 350 Squadron never flew Spitfire XIV during the war. They received Spitfire XVI in 1944. Both squadrons kept these aircraft 'on loan' after the war until the order of Spitfire XIV came through. All Spit 14's were delivered between April 1947 and July 1949.

Very interesting footage. How resourceful of the English to utilise it as a transport plane instead of scrapping it! Another thing I noticed is the roundels, which appear to be very different from what was being used during 1942. The proportions of the circles are more akin to their modern roundel.

My Headmaster at school, Tom Holloway, was on this raid and shot down. He was the only surviver from his crew and was captured and sent, eventually, to Stalag Luft 3 and billeted in Hut 103, next to the famous Hut 104. He was one of the 'Penguins' tasked with disposing of the soil from 'Harry' by the use of 'sausages' down their trouser legs.

The ones starting up are the section from No.442 Squadron RCAF that were sent over around 0800 hrs, coming back later in the morning, which we see here with Larry Robillard, DFM, firing up 'P'. The RAF had to convince the Nazi anti aircraft batteries that they weren't on a low level bombing raid and were dropping badly needed food to the Dutch rather than HE ordnance on German targets. The Nazis were persuaded and didn't open fire; had they done so there would have been a lot of aircrews not coming home as the Lancasters were sitting targets flying at almost zero altitude.

These young 20 something year olds seriously put their lives on the line each time they went 'wheels up' to face the enemy. Today, young 20 something year olds feel unsafe if someone just says something they don't like or uses the wrong pronoun for them.
