    Great to see this kind of link-up, adding value to customers, heat geeks and Castrad. We are hoping to be using heat geeks in 2025 to replace our gas boiler with a heat pump and heat store and have big designer rads in the lounge that just don’t emit enough heat. The castrad designs look like they might provide us with something beautiful to replace them with. Thanks guys.

    Any suggestions for insurers who will cover homes with Heat Pumps and renewables? I’m finding it extremely challenging to find domestic insurers who are up to speed. My current insurer wants to massively increase my premium just for having a heat pump, solar and batteries installed. Additionally it will then not extend cover to these items.

    Why don't MCS, NICIEC, CERTSURE, UKAS etc protect end user consumers like my wife & I? Its shameful the lengths these organisations go to in protecting rogue installers such as Anglian Energy Solutions Ltd & their main contractor AES Contractors Ltd fun from the same Cambridge office by the same director Henri James Mcgeough, these companies installed a not fit for purpose ASHP heating system in our home in 2019, a joint approved expert witness report (James Hoare of LHW Partnership LLP) proved this beyond any doubt, AES Contractors Ltd provided laughably poor Heat Loss & Design Calculations, this has left us with a cold house & a SCOP of 1.7 and also without a BS 7671 Electrical Safety Certificate, yet nobody from the above does anything or gives a damn, truly shocking. On top of the scops. My system at home was installed early November. Very happy with the system, design and installation however we (me, installer & Vaillant tech support) suspect there is an issue with the cop calculations, possibly due to sensor issues. Efficacy seems spot on, it’s way underestimating the cop, about 50%. Quite a lot of work has went into proving there’s not an issue with the install. We should be getting looked at in the new year. The purpose of this post isn’t to moan, just to give feedback as you discussed. If Vaillant , heat geek or I can’t calculate an accurate cop/scop then it won’t help anyone.

    My property has a gas central heating system with microbore pipework, which I've learned would need to be changed to larger bore, as would all the rads, all 13 of them!!! Problem is, the pipework to the rads is buried in the concrete floor on the ground level, and under the flooring on the upper level, which is particle board in large sheets!!! The house is also large, with a split level lounge, so tricky to route anything. So the install for a heatpump would be epic, with floors up, and grief knows what else to run new pipework. Apart from the upheaval, which I don't think I could tolerate, is the cost. £25-30k is the best estimate, so as much as £22.5k to me. This I cannot and will never be able to afford as I'm now retired and living on state pension, and to be honest, even if I had the money I wouldn't want to blow so much on something I've been forced into!!! I've also been told by a number of people that have installed heatpumps that they never get their house as warm as the gas boiler did, and cost more to run. So, stuff that, even if I did have the conversion it might not work as well as the boiler did, and I wouldn't know until it was installed!!!! Consequently, if gas heating is entirely removed as an option in the future, I'll just go to oil or wood pellet burners!!! This whole concept is just utter nonsense!!!

      Totally. The installation upheaval and cost is untenable for some houses. Air to Air heat pump or wood pellet could be the way. Heat pumps do work really well though and use a quarter of the energy of a boiler. Poor performance is due to poor install not the heat pump unit itself. 50% of Norwegian homes have them.

    Vaillant in Germany needs to join the "Too of the SCOP" bandwagon. The way they currently plan and set up their heat pumps is unfortunately very far from optimal. Parallel (4 pipe) buffers, no knowledge of three pipe buffers, no acceptance of volumisers, unnecessary components that cost money and efficiency, suboptimal settings for Legionella cycle, hysteresis and offsets...there is so much room for improvement here, and Vaillant Germany often actually "forces" their licensed installers to do subotpimal installs...🤷‍♂️

    • @nigelpendall4809
      @nigelpendall4809 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The issue with size is down to physics. An air to water heat pump needs a radiator of a certain size to work and that size is not small compared with a gas boiler.. however the heat pump does not have to be at ground level. Roof ?.wallmounted?

    Heat-Geek should be encouraging installers to make a note at the end of each install what went wrong with the install a) from the installer's perspective (what did they or their team do wrong and how might they have avoided the problem) and b) what aspect of the kit they were installing made the job difficult. If every installer did this, then the quality of installs and the feedback available to all manufacturers would increase massively.

    The question asking would MCS even exist if it wasn't for the BUS payments was interesting. Ian defended with the example of MCS certification being subscribed for the solar industry even though no money was involved. That was disingenuous because we were forced to use MCS for Solar - not with a payment from the public purse but it was essential to get a feed-in tarrif. Otherwise I would have installed it all myself which would have saved a load of grief from Solar Service Solutions who have now gone bust but will likely rise from the ashes as another MCS certified installer. By the way I thought Ian's attitude towards Emma was quite patronising.

    One element that I have noticed with many of these podcasts about heat pumps and the inter-related subjects is the lack of discussion about capital costs and the effective rate of return. All electro-mechanical equipment has a finite life and will therefore require replacemment at the then current price. Many of the discussions seem to assume that a high %age of the population will have the financial resources to implement the most efficient system/solution. Update: comment made before minute 38 so was before the comments about econmic fairness, this is one of the most fundamental elements with respect to mass effect of change of lifestyle.

    This really struck a chord with me. I was a self-employed heating installer who was desperate to transition from installing gas boilers to installing heat pumps. Over a 3 year period I paid for and completed the BPEC heat pump installation course, attended numerous manufacturers training courses and completed the excellent Heat Geek course. It was at that point the realisation hit home that as a sole trader I'd never be able to set aside the time to complete the mountain of paperwork involved in accessing the relevant grants for my prospective customers. I'm now working for Aira and thoroughly enjoying putting my skills and knowledge into practice while being supported by a group of very committed colleagues. Listening to Matt Isherwood has reinforced my opinion that I've made the right decision and I look forward to seeing my colleagues becoming fellow Heat Geeks.

    MCS is pure evil. I get it suits the government to lazily off-load some form of quality and standards deployed in these sectors but over the last 2 decades, MCS being required for FIT , SEG and now BUS, has also led to many a homeowner either miss out on these benefits or simply scrap doing an install of Green technology altogether. I personally put off Solar for many years and then ran DIY Solar system without any export tariff benefits due to the costs of getting an MCS install done and now its having the same effect in the Heat Pump sector.

    The move to decarbonisation and electrification of heat is a new step in technology for homeowners. Good electricians, plumbers and heating engineers have the skills and technical knowledge to learn new technologies, systems and practices as regulations change. Over regulation should be removed. You don't need to do the whole 2-3 hour peak period to get a large grid benefit if you split a large population into 3-6 groups and do 30-60 mins per group. Next to no-one will notice a 30 min setback and only the worst insulated will notice an hour. The Daikin's have built in smart grid relay controls to support force on with room buffering and force off too. I have done 3 hour setbacks with no pre-heat on Agile, we do start to notice slight reduction in comfort in colder weather.

    One other variable is the inverter power limit. During the peak, in a house that is fully electrified, it's possible to draw more power than the inverter(s) can deliver. Shutting down loads in that period will help avoid going out to the grid at peak.

    To answer your question about where the profit goes when the wholesale market price is high: wind farms are mostly running under a "contract for difference". The developer bids for a fixed price when they build the wind farm, and the government pockets the difference. However if the wholesale price ever dropped below the "strike price", the government would pay the difference. That isolates the developer from market swings and allows long-term planning. In the most recent auctions for off-shore wind, the strike price was set at £50/MWH just 5p/kWh ! www.gov.uk/government/publications/contracts-for-difference-cfd-allocation-round-6-results

    Batteries are not a universal panacea; they are subject to efficiency constraints too. I have a V2G EV setup and the round-trip efficiency is around 81% at full charge/discharge rates; when you decrease the amount of energy you are charging or discharging with, the efficiency goes down, and I've measured the one-way efficiency as low as 66% for 730W, and that can still be useful but it does mean the input energy can be quite a bit more than the output energy. So there's a calculation to be done with a trade-off of efficiencies and that may be a fairly simple calculation but it probably varies on a case-by-case basis. I don't have a heat pump yet but that's something I'll be experimenting with when I do; I've had a survey done and apparently the heat loss is about 5kW for the house so it's probably going to be a fairly small heat pump. An efficiency curve of operation of V2G battery kit versus power level for charging and discharging is a question anyone should ask who is going for a system.
