Comms Check! | F-4 Phantom
มุมมอง 3.9Kวันที่ผ่านมา
Made some good progress with the ICS and radio communication systems! Was able to figure out what is working, what, isn't working, and what we need to look into further. Already looking into a capability to capture in cockpit audio, much like I did with the handheld radio. Also wrenched on the tugs, getting the wheel brake cylinder out of the one tug with brake issues. And it seems we have succ...
Back On Her Feet Again! | F-4 Phantom
มุมมอง 2.8K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
It was a cold and wet day at the hangar, and we made the best of things. We got the two steels in the brake stack flipped back in the right orientation, and got the wheel back on. We also addressed the some of our ground equipment, namely two of the tugs and their batteries. For those of you that are on Instagram, check out Jack's page, as he regularly posts stuff from the hangar. His page is a...
More F-4 Work and Skyhawk in Flight!
มุมมอง 5K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
Pretty good day here at the hangar. Got some good work done with the F-4 and our TA-4J took to the skies for the first time in at least 4 years! Added a new capability to the channel as well, which is to capture the air traffic audio. Hope you all enjoy that! For those of you that are on Instagram, check out Jack's page, as he regularly posts stuff from the hangar. His page is at: instagram.com...
Mig-17 Afterburner Test and TA-4J Skyhawk Update
มุมมอง 6Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Today is a bit of a mixed bag at the airfield. Didn't have a lot of F-4 crew today (ok, there were two of us), so we did what we could. Worked on a tug, prepped a tire, and also helped out over at the Vietnam War Flight Museum. Learned more about the TA-4J status, and also watched some of the final preps with the Mig-17. That included checking the afterburner! For those of you that are on Insta...
Back On Her Feet & Special Announcement | F-4 Phantom
มุมมอง 8Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Lot of good stuff today. Got the F-4 back down on her wheels, got to see some air action down at the flight line, and had a really good organization meeting over at Vietnam War Flight Museum. Speaking of the Vietnam War Flight Museum, they are trying to acquire an F-8 Crusader! This one in particular was one of the last ones to ever fly in the entire world. She is currently located in France an...
Setting Your Ripple Timing in the F-4 | DCS World
มุมมอง 1.1Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Today we are exploring the intervalometer, the part of the Aircraft Weapon Release Unit (AWRU) responsible for the release timing of multiple bombs and/or rockets from your aircraft. In the case of bombs, it sets up the impact spacing between weapons. Knowing how to set it can be intimidating, but I think I can help simplify that for you here. Formula for calculating bomb spacing for a low leve...
Swinging the Gear | F-4 Phantom
มุมมอง 8Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Had a really productive day at the Phantom! Starting working again on the shuttle valve in the aft canopy actuator, and we did gear swings to re-rig the right main gear door! Very successful, and not only does the gear open and close as it should, but the door is properly adjusted as well. Also shared some insight on our safety process, which includes a safety brief before major procedures. Got...
Back To Work | F-4 Phantom
มุมมอง 2.6Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Slightly slow week this week as there was only two of use here, including a new volunteer! More of us will be here next weekend so we're setting up to lift the F-4 off the ground and do gear swings so we can re-rig the right main gear door. Get to dust off the Phantom Bite Counter as well! For those of you that are on Instagram, check out Jack's page, as he regularly posts stuff from the hangar...

Here it is, the video from the air show weekend! We had a blast, and the response has been great from everyone we interacted with! Have some good video to share with you, including some unique perspectives like a 1st person view during the Vietnam reenactment from the air show infield. Got to meet some Phantom Phylers and Phixers, several of which served in Vietnam! We even learned that Duke Cu...

Work continues to get ready for the upcoming airshow. Am wearing our latest T shirt and have a new camera to show you all. Something I'd never seen before is hand propping an engine, especially if it's a radial. @JetJerod shows how it's done! Wednesday before the show, and we are getting ready! Brought out the F-4 and gave her a quick bath over at the washrack. Got to see one of the Blue Angels arrive. The rest of the Blues should be arriving on Thursday. Likely will be prepping another aircraft tommorow... Soundtrack used is "Know Myself", by Patrick Patrikios. Tech Talk - Starting a J-79 | F-4 Phantom
I spent 21 years in the Tail Hook Navy and always loved the F4 unfortunately I was never in a F4 Squadron, spent first 9 or 10 years with A7 Squadrons. Got into the Hornets when I was on the F/A-18 Fleet Introduction Team 1980. Spent from then till 1991 with F-18 Squadrons. I can remember the sound of those two J79 when a F4 would taxi by. Great Aircraft with a history that is just amazing.
i wasa crew chief on RF -4C at the 117th tactical Recon wing , Birminghamd Al . Air National Guard 1978
14 speed records, 1958 Collier Trophy, Bendix Trophy award on multiple airframes, The A-5, F-4, F104, and B58 were all known for one thing..."Now you see me, now you don't" speeds. Thank you guys for keeping her flying. I was born in the 60s and remember the the Thunderbirds flying the F-4 at airshows.
I was a weapons mechanic on F-4E 1978-1981 great memories
i went so fast in my F-4 U after a MIG in a dive i was peeling paint .
Yep, I got hooked on the sound and smell of F4 , so for the rest of my life I became a D7-8-9-10 Cat operator.😅😅
I like it! Can almost smell it thru the computer screen!
Them "Sam, can you make a brick fly?" "watch."
Was aF4j mechanic in the 70s USNavy what a trip down memory lane. Thanks
I'm familiar with a few jet engines........De Havilland Vampire, F86 Sabre, Mirage III, Mirage F1, Mig 23......would love to hear the Phantom.....
I'm not into DCS, the fact that you guys are working on a project like that is amazing. I wish you all the success in the world as you create! Merry Christmas to all you Phantom Phans!
Merry Christmas to you and yours
Merry Christmas to you as well 🎄
Happy holidays folks o7.
Whether you know it or not, you've answered a long-running question I've had about how guys get inside cockpit footage with the crew audio.
There are a few different ways of going about it. The real trick is getting (or making) the right adapter cable, and sending the audio into a standalone audio recorder, mixing console, or camera audio feed. In this case it's to the mic port on the GoPro Media Mod attachment.
I saw a stencil on this plane. Was this plane actually flown by Robin Olds?
No, we don’t have any record that he ever flew this one. She is painted to represent the F-4C that he did fly for Operation Bolo, which was 63-7680. Our Phanton is an F-4D, tail number 65-0749.
@@DieselThunderAviation Thanks !!
Great vid! 🎉
Glad you enjoyed it!
We had a homemade tester in our support. Guys would sign out headsets and cables and run a quick check before going out.. A little history; the big black clunky headset were XF3, field repairable. In the mid eighties, we started getting some lighter weight ones that ended up being XB3, disposable. I tried and couldn't fix them, then I submitted a form 1000 to make them repairable. Unfortunately, supply guys couldn't read blue tags and ended up throwing the examples I had away instead of shipping them to Rickenbacker.
You guys have an in with the DOD donations at GSA.gov that might provide more free equipment…Might get some late Christmas gifts 👍🏻🎅🏻👌🏻
It is a true military bureaucracy that the Air Force & Navy can not talk to each other 🤣🧐😝
Right! What I think it boils down to is that each branch came up with their own standards for crew com and radio specifications and then used different plugs and connectors. Then you end up with oddballs like the Air Force F-4's which was a Navy design. Not sure how much the Air Force changed with the comms stuff from what the Navy used, if they changed anything.
Thank you for showing at 2:15 a Kurnass from the 69th Hammers. I had the privilege to maintain them in the early '90s. They had a long and lustrous service from 1969 through 1996. Nothing else sounded like a pair of J-79 thundering down the runway with a full payload.
My pleasure! That was one of the cool screenshots I took of the F-4 in DCS recently. The Hammers F-4 is a great looking livery in DCS, and I think Heatblur may have recently added another Hammers livery, that one being a Karpada. I'll be sure and look next time I fly in DCS.
@@DieselThunderAviation I never saw a Kurnass in USAF livery, as by the time I was serving they had all been repainted long ago. But there were a few wing droptanks in the squadron still in dark USAF jungle green paint. Some of them were rather scruffy and dented, I don't know if they were period to Vietnam or not from 20 years prior. The connection to the USAF and the intense operations in Vietnam did seem fitting. Merry Christmass to you and yours.
There's also a picture I have somewhere in my camera roll of a Kurnass-esque Phantom paint scheme with a USAF roundel which I'm assuming is a pre-sale Phantom much like the Asia-Minor one in DCS
There should be a headset with a chrome frame (unless it got misplaced). I know the mic has already been changed out.
I'll be sure and look around for it next time at the hangar. Thanks for the heads up!
Sure brings back memories. I loaded munitions on the F-4 in 67-68 in Thailand. Didn’t realize how much I loved the plane until they sent me back stateside to SAC. I never forgave them
Is there a way to lock the slats on the F4? I kinda like it more when the slats are in.
Sure is. Pilot cockpit, left hand side. Think it’s a yellow/black guarded switch that will lock the slats.
That mask and headset tester is a nice piece of gear! Electrical connections, and the associated connectors, always seemed like the most common form of failure for any sort of avionics. Maybe not a surprise, considering all of the handling and abuse that they tend to receive? Glad that you identified the location of your problem.
Yeah, that test set is really nice, and certainly was incredibly handy. Will make short work of putting together working headsets. And yes, my experience with headsets on ships is that they tend to get banged up with use. Can't imagine the flight line being a less forgiving environment.
It makes me so happy to see the electronic elves out there leaving all kinds of presents for me to enjoy when I come down next week!! Nice work guys!!!
For sure, we made some good headway with it, and should be able to explain why next week as well.
Wow. I thought this was a Verizon commercial... "CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW...????"😅
Sure seemed that way!
Really cool to meet new volunteers and see them doing stuff. The section with the comm jacks was actually interesting.
Glad you liked it! There are more volunteers here than have been shown. Not everyone wants to be on the camera and I try to be respectful of that.
Merry Christmas! As always, thanks for sharing.
Merry Christmass.
The face he makes at 11:32 when he says, "Im going to edit that out," is so funny, considering he, in fact did not edit it out
Didn't think that it sounded good when I said that though ended up being funny when I watched it, so I left it in!
when i press the fire button it doesnt fiee the rockets, it fires the normal Starfing can someone help?
The guns are on the stick trigger, which have no other function in the aircraft besides the guns. Rockets (and bombs) are on the thumb button on the stick, which should be the Weapon Release button in the key bindings.
we just got the bolts off of the nose cone and got it to swing around i dont know if you have to do that in the states
how much would it cost for a 30-minute ride very interested??
