mine is 86 with racks

I just acquired one of these

my dad got me an 86 trx70 for my 4th birthday . he said it was the same age as me thats why he got it . i still have that same 70 . the next year he asked me what i wanted to do when i got older and i said race my 4 wheeler . in 2001 he got me an 86 trx250r for racing and i still have it . i still racing quads to this day thanks to my dad

I have 2 of these, a 79 and the 84. I dont like the 79. Pretty gutless. Also has the worst shift pattern of anything ever. My 84 is pretty good though. Plenty of power. Has a good shift pattern. One difference i noticed is that the 79 has a snowmobile thumb throttle, while the 84 has a traditional atv thumb throttle. The 79 has a smooth linear throttle response but calluses your hand after a while. The 84 thumb throttle is really comfortable, but also really snatchy. Both are fun, but definitely get an 83+ if your gonna get one. Also i broke my leg on the 84 😂 crash video on my channel for those interested

Thanks for uploading this, as I've never seen it before! I finally bought my first ATC - a minty original 86 200x, 2 years ago, at age 44 and it's the perfect midlife-crisis toy. Quick, fun and nimble, but not fast enough to die on, like a 250R or 350x. A perfect machine for an old beginner. Every time I ride my 200x, the adrenalin flows. My 4 wheeler has been retired for yard work. My advice to anyone thinking about buying an ATC... don't wait!

Well, I think those guys needed a 250r model instead to get things done even quicker and leave a whiff of that sweet two-stroke smell behind everywhere, saying : "hey, life is short, and it always get shorter, so it's best to live it a full throttle"...😅

My dad came home with the 86 when I was ten. It was an absolute dream come true! Rode that thing into the ground. Good times!!

I'm curious as to why Honda switched the orientation of the chain from the right side on '84 and earlier R's to the left in '85 and subsequent years.

I am not so sure about some of the riding techniques taught in the educational film, (not sure how many people really got good on them by 1985. But I have seen guys fly around a MX track a couple years later. The part about what is on the other side of a hill is some of the most important in off road riding, and we did meet a lot of great people on the trails. Some still friends to this day I am sure. A young gal gonna pick up a older good looking guy in the woods, but talked out of it by her friend, to show they should not ride double. How "Progressive"? "Dad, she tried to pick up this older fisherman, and I told her, "You can't ride double on a ATV!"". Is that all he told her!!?? How about,---"You should not be a slut!"? lol I think I just changed my mind about this, "educational film".

Right around the time when 60 minutes destroyed the 3-wheeler in the public's perception. But unlike that show, the public did not see this vid before the 3-wheeler got banned. This industry (off road dirt bikes) has been a big part of my life since 1974 when I was 10 years old, and I never knew this vid existed until 2024. Was the media choosing what we saw back then?

It was along the line of the industry changing Honda ad, "You meet the nicest people on a Honda", that ended the idea of motorcycle riders in the USA being a bunch of criminal gangs and hoods, (which was propagated by hollywood and widely accepted in the public eye, until that Honda ad broke the ice with that now famous ad about a decade earlier.). I would say we see some good values/responsibility propagated in this safety ad. But it did not work. The 3-wheeler got banned anyway in short time. Baby sitter rules ya know. :(

Love Yamaha but Hondas where better

Me and my best friend back in early 90s would ride for hrs every day on our farm when we were kids. I had an 86 Big Red and a 87 LT125, and he had a 84 honda 70 and a 85 LT230 and I remember how well that 230 ran. I honestly think the 230s and 250 quadracers had the all time sexiest body designs of any quad. Just curious but did that 230 sell?

I never thought I'd see any of these magazines again, I collected all of these when I was a kid, had several totes full from the early 80s on. after my divorce my x wife put them all in the dumpster without my knowledge just for spite. thank you for this...absolutely made my day.

Thank you so much for this. I remember being a kid and having the February issue of 3&4 wheel action. It was my favorite issue because, as a 6 year old, I was obsessed with the yfm60. This particular issue had a shootout between it and the trx70. My younger cousin, for reasons unknown, decided she would tear the magazine to shreds. I was devistated and I’ve been searching for this certain issue for 38 years now and I’m beyond grateful to be able to see it once again.

I remember begging my mother to take me down to the book store so I could grab every single one of these. The first of every month was the most exciting day of the week for me. As a matter of fact, I still have tons of these stacked up along with publications like Dirt Bike, Motocross Action, Motocross magazine, Dirt Rider, and a bunch more that went out of business as well.

Thanks for this. I've collected a few of these older magazines but some are hard to find and expensive. I'm looking forward to reading the ones I don't have.

I have 8 of these ATCs, and I love them ALL. 3 1982 ATC 250r, 4 1983-1984 ATC 250r, and 1 1985 ATC 250r. I go out with friends and family on them, and keep the old tradition alive of 3 wheels on sand. There are some great quads out there, but they are nowhere near the same thrill as these trikes were and still are. I can still smoke about anything on my 300cc kitted 84 ATC250r. Legendary bikes.

OMG ! I still have this video my brother brought from the dealer. I used to watch it for hours. Who remembers the ATC 125M AND 200X Allman Bros soundtrack to this video? I have a 86 ATC 250r an my brother has his back in '86 to '90.

I rode 3-wheelers my whole life and never got hurt. Amazing machines!!!

Let's be honest. Anyone can jump on a quad and go fast, but only a true technician can go fast on a three-wheeler. That's why guys like Marty Hart, Mike Coe, and Curtis Sparks won everything. They were the truly talented ones.

Boy, this really brings back memories. I had the original 1985 model, and it was like a real-life dream. What surprised me most about these is the fact that Suzuki used the original Full Floater suspension system except instead of using two actuator arms, they only used one. Where your sticker is placed reminded me of the one on mine. It was in the same spot except it read "Deerfield Suzuki," which was the dealership where it was purchased from in Western Massachusetts. It's gone now, but the memories will last forever. Great times.

Very excited to see this website. As a kid in the 80s I bought a lot of Dirt Wheels magazines, but stupidly threw the away when I moved out. I've started collecting them again but they are getting pricey.

I remember you like it was yesterday, Mike. You were Marty Hart's wingman during the eighties for Honda, and I loved every minute of it! I remember when Suzuki came in with their QuadRacer, forcing the sport to change drastically, not to mention how 60 Minutes trashed three-wheelers with no facts and a huge bias against these machines. Thanks for the memories, and I'd love to hear some old three-wheeler stories back from the day if you have any.
