    I got the Motu M2 when it was first released, a few years later I switch to the M4. To this day, I still love my unit. I've heard all the complaints over the years and I have never had any issues what so ever. I have my EC1 preamp running to it now or I'll run my ART Voice Channel through it but the non coloration of audio is pure and clean.

      @@mastermiller9776 I use them both primarily for vocals. I bought the Voice-Channel a few years ago and wanted something for vocals that would allow me to tailor my voice going in. A little Compression, EQ and since my space is not professionally treated, the Expander was a must. I changed out the original tube on the VC and put in a JJ Electronic ECC83s, sounds great. The EC1 is the desktop model of the Camden 500 series preamp and it is an amazing peace of gear. So much more than just a simple mic pre with it's Mojo feature (impedance) and it also has a great headphone amp. Both have a different tone to them on my voice so it changes which mic pre I want to use based on which microphone I'm using. Sometimes I'll run the EC1 through the VC and by-pass it's pre's for the EC1 to be able to use the other features on the VC. The EC1 pretty much stay's connected though just for the headphone amp! 😁

    • @jonkthompson
      @jonkthompson 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@mastermiller9776 I use both for vocals depending on which mic I'm using, determines which peace of gear I use. The Voice-Channel is a Tube channel strip, tube voltage switch, compressor/limiter, expander/gate, de-esser, and semi-parametric eq. I bought it a few years ago and never looked back! I got the EC1 (which is just a desktop version of the Camden 500 series mic pre) a year ago and immediately fell in love. It also has a great mic pre and a "Mojo" switch (impedance) for "cream" or "thump" but it also has a great headphone amp! Cranborne calls it "an interface for your interface". As for your question, I enjoy them both equally, they each have their own tone to them. I changed out the tube for a JJ Electronics tube on the VC and it sounds amazing. If I decide on the EC1, I bypass the mic pre on the VC so I can still use the channel strip options.

    Bravo mate! I'd like to call this "The most complete 8i6 review in the world!", taking inspiration from Boyka! Quality! Onto the question: Can it be set up as a 4 channel surround audio output device (also, in addition to being the audio interface to the PC/Mac) for games and movies playback? If yes, assuming the two headphone outs and / or 4 line outs can be purposed for this? Appreciate any guidance here.

    • @mastermiller9776
      @mastermiller9776 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey man I Appreciate That! But I must say, On The 4 Channel Out being used in "Surround", just as You Mentioned, I'd Imagine You Can... But I Can Not Say for Sure, as I'VE NEVER Done That Myself, nor have I even thought about doing that.. not to say it can't be Done tho. So On That, I'm not sure. I CAN SAY, For Games & Movie Playback.. If It's Anything Playing Off Your Computer, YES, FOR SURE. I've Done Both. Played Call of Duty & Watch a Movie or 2. Just switch the sound output on your computer to the 8i6 and you should be good to go.

      @@wentworthmiller1890 Man We Recorded Vocals & Guitar thru the 8i6 and Tbh, As far as Latency Goes, It Wasn't Any Different than When I Record thru My Apollo X4, where all the Apollo line interfaces provide "sub millisecond" latency.. The 8i6, Motu M4, Volt 276 alike, all Provide "Direct Monitoring" as you'll find they all have their own variation of a "software mixer" that you're essentially monitoring from off the Direct input during Tracking. So As Long As You Have Your DAW Audio Channel You're Recording to, MUTED, You won't hear any "doubling" or "delays".. No Latency That We Experienced over Here ✅

      @@wentworthmiller1890Oh and On The Gen 4.. At The Surface, The GEN 3 & GEN 4 alike are Both USB-C Interfaces... Buuuut with the GEN 4 You're getting Almost 15 dbs more of gain from the Preamps (if you ever need it) beyond that, Refined Sonics All throughout the Unit, it's looking like.. they improved on the Converters and they have seemed to Re-Engineer that "Air Mode" function.. 🤷🏾‍♂ So I Would Say, Go with That GEN 4. And in the event you do decide to go with it, jump thru that link in the description and it will take you to it. You'll notice ABOVE the 8i6 GEN 3, it will say, "Our Recommended Alternative" with Your GEN 4 Right there. And as far as questions go.. Never Hesitate to Ask.. Ask Away.. we're here to Talk Audio.

    Great concise review. 🙌As a fellow mac user, I am curious if the system volume can affect the overall studio monitor output on the unit, or can studio monitor volume only be changed on the physical device itself? On some lower end interfaces an accidental key press can change the overall output volume thus having to monitor two different output levels. On my ZED R16 output volume can only be adjusted on the device itself and not through the OS volume control. Hope that makes sense. Cheers.

    • @mastermiller9776
      @mastermiller9776 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To That I would Have To Say, NO. Not The "System Volume". Once You change your Mac's Sound Output to 8i6, Your Mac's "System Volume" is Overridden by The 8i6's Volume Controls. Now You will still have secondary Volume or Gain Control, Beyond The Volume knob on the 8i6, within Apps or Sites like Apple Music, Splice, Epidemic Sounds or TH-cam.. which all have their internal built in volume functions. ..Hope that answers your question.

      Maaan... Me Personally, given Music is such a COLLABORATIVE process.. In The Event Somebody is helping you with recording or mixing a record at your spot.. or a feature artist you might end up working with.. the M4 having that extra headphone output alone, is WORTH spending the little extra cash. Then In addition to that, The M4 having the 2 EXTRA LINE INPUTS will soon enough come in handy as well. ..Buuuut If You're truly Rockin' It Solo. with no desires of collaborating.. 🤷🏾‍♂ Then Yeah, for You, the M2 Should suffice.

So I reached out to a couple of my people that own IEMs and have a lot of experience using them.. And All Their Experience with IEMs "Lined Up" with My Initial Thoughts On This Matter. MAN.. I HEAR YOU & FEEL YOU on not being happy on the audio quality with that USB Mic connectivity.. As I've never been a fan of USB mics all together. With that said, ur mic does have an XLR output as well.. PLUS you ALREADY have a quality pair of headphones, with those Beyerdynamics.. If you were to Throw in the M4 and a High Quality XLR Cable (i.e. Mogami or Jumperz) into ur setup.. that should bring you to a better place as far as Audio Quality Is Concerned. Is it worth it? 🤷🏾‍♂Well that depends on how serious you are about your audio. But given you actually jumped on here to comment about it, I would say, for you it will be worth it.

    Cloud lifters have always been a big no from me. It does change the mic character, and for the worse imo. But I've also been working in studios my whole life where we have all the great vintage gear and more importantly - stable and regulated, CLEAN power. I see how a cloud lifter can help if you have residential power and every time you crank your pre, a hum or buzz is introduced. That's your residential power, connected circuits and ground loops, unstable frequency, etc. That's why you may need a Cloudlifter in a specific situation. Power regulation gets expensive, but it can be worth it. The other use for them USED to be for mid-level interfaces, but now all of the major manufacturers have built their on-board preamps with that in mind in this latest generation, while also using better internal parts and improved grounding. That's why cloud lifter teamed up with Shure for the mic SM7dB, they saw the writing on the wall and had consolidated their tech into the mic to remain relevant.

      It's a Beautiful Thing. I Wanna Say I AGREE with Every Last Word You Said. But On Second Thought.. although Initially I Wasn't a Fan Of The Cloudlifter.. I Have To Say The Last Time I Used It, I Could Hear It Better for What It Was.. and Must Say, Although It Was Subtle.. I Could Hear the Difference. And I Could Appreciate It. But What You Were Speaking To, As Far As Your Studio Experience Goes.. I AGREE.. If One Had Access To All Of The Pro Gear.. in A Professional Studio Environment.. I Don't See The Cloudlifter Ever Needing To Come up In The Conversation. ..You Nailed It.

    Great video! I appreciate the effort, but I’d like to clarify a couple of points. First, the Cloudlifter is essentially just a preamp that provides clean gain for low-output mics like the Shure SM7B. While useful, a dedicated preamp (like the DBX 286s or ART Pro MPA II) can provide the same clean gain with added control over the signal, such as EQ or compression. So, a Cloudlifter isn’t the only option-many external preamps offer more flexibility for the same or slightly higher investment. Second, you repeatedly referred to the “recording interfaces” as “preamps.” While interfaces do have built-in preamps, their primary function is as analog-to-digital converters. The preamps in these devices are basic and meant for general use, not the same as dedicated external preamps designed specifically for amplifying low-output mics with more precision and less noise. In short, interfaces aren’t true preamps, and using a dedicated preamp can give you better results than relying on a Cloudlifter and a budget interface. Thanks again for the video-just wanted to clarify those key points for viewers!

That said, to the FIRST HALF of ur comment, I would Agree with Almost All of It, except the reality of Suggesting the likes of The "ART Pro MPA II", as a SUBSTITUTE/ ALTERNATIVE for "CLEAN GAIN". I would have to Disagree with That. I would let the DBX 286 Pre make it in this exchange, Due To It's Solid State Design.. But I have NEVER heard of Any Engineer, reaching for a TUBE PREAMP when in need of CLEAN GAIN.. and well, The "ART Pro MPA II" is a TUBE BASED DEIGN. You did make a great point tho, having said, "many external preamps offer more flexibility for the same or slightly higher investment", Unfortunately for this Channel, We haven't quite made it there yet, in discussing Dedicated External Mic Preamps. and So To the SECOND PART of ur comment.. It goes without having to say, when I'm referencing these "Recording interfaces" as "Preamps", That I'm Referring to The Preamp SECTION Of The Interface. Which I Think Is Clear To Our Viewers Here On This Channel. There Is Such a Thing As a "Multi Functional Unit" i.e.The Interfaces In This Video. So Your Statement of "interfaces aren’t true preamps" Would Be The Equivalent of Saying, The COMPRESSOR In The DBX 286s, Isn't really a "TRUE COMPRESSOR" because it Sits in part of a "Multi Functional Unit", Given That It's Primary function isn't Compression. And Using a Dedicated External Preamp Will In fact, NOT ENSURE The User LESS NOISE, and In Many Cases WILL ACTUALLY BE "NOISIER" vs Using The Onboard Preamp Found In Some Interfaces. . But Definitely Not a True Statement, That Dedicated Preamps, Inherently have "LESS NOISE". This Would Definitely Be a Case by Case Basis. So I would say, While Incorporating dedicated analog units can really Help You Sonically Upgrade Your Recording Chain.. ..Where FUNCTIONALITY & QUALITY Meets PRICE POINT, You Can't Go Wrong With The Interfaces We Are Recommending on This Channel.. FOR THE BEGINNER AUDIO ENTHUSIAST. Key Word BEGINNER. There Are A Lot Of Things To Consider When Investing in a Recording Setup.. And Not Everybody has an EXTRA $300-500 to Aquire The Analog Units That You Mentioned. .. and beyond those Dedicated Units, They Will Still Need An Interface to Provide Quality Conversion.. which Brings Us Back To Where We Are At On This Channel, And Why We're Recommending The Units We Are Recommending. We Will Be Moving To MICROPHONES NEXT.. and Will Be Discussing Dedicated Analog Units For Those Wanting To Upgrade Their Chain Down The Line. 🥂 THANKS AGAIN for all that You contribute to The audio discussion here at SOUND SOCIETY! I'm Here for it.

    Also I Wanna Add, BEFORE Starting This Channel, I never really considered or associated MOTU with HIGH QUALITY Audio.. But after READING A HANDFUL Of COMMENTS Here On THE CHANNEL with People Giving Endless Praise To The MOTU M4, Saying We Should Include It In Our Interface Shootouts, I tried It Out, and well.. 🤷🏾‍♂I Stand Corrected. The AUDIO QUALITY, DEFINITELY! Holds Up To The Rest Of The Units In This Class Of Interfaces.. All That To Say, YOUR COMMENTS ARE HIGHLY CONSIDERED HERE ON THIS CHANNEL. Comments, Questions, Opinions.. If It's audio related, We're here for it.

    SO! I Had a GOOD TIME with The M4. The Monitor Mix knob was 🔥! Having Only 1 HEADPHONE OUTPUT was my only real complaint. Beyond that, THIS UNIT FEELS SOLID & SOUNDS GREAT! Would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!

    I'm blown away by the review! Amazing job. I wonder if one of the creators is The Division player. I ask this because ''Differences detected, Line Outputs'' sounds like an I.S.A.C. (Intelligent System Analytic Computer) which is highly advanced artificial intelligence (AI) who is giving the information to the agents from my fav looter shooter game series The Division. My guess is that someone got the motivation from it. Anyway, I like the idea to put something like that in the review video, really. :)

      eh Branden, So some quick SM7B EQ switch applications for you.. 1) PODCAST VOCAL = Bass Rolloff = "FLAT" & Presence Boost = "FLAT" 2) LEAD VOCAL for a RECORD = Bass Rolloff = "FLAT" & Presence Boost = "ENGAGED" 3) BACKGROUND VOCALS for a RECORD = Bass Rolloff = "ENGAGE" & Presence Boost = "FLAT" ..Obviously you have the final say. Experiment with the different settings and hit me back, lemme know what you find that you like.

    Hey Millz, big youtube channel fan... great work! Microphone question... For Rap vocals Lauten 320 V2, Warm Audio WA-87, or Lewitt 540 subzero? I'm using audient id14 & EPL mike-e pre. Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙏🏾

    • @mastermiller9776

      Man! Good To Hear ALL THAT! So Check It.. If I Got Ur Gear Right.. You Got That Empirical Labs Mic Pre & Compressor Rackmount Unit.. 👀 Looks Pretty 🔥 I Would Say With The Mics.. Any Of The 3.. You'll Be Good To Go. SOME CONTEXT.. I'm Personally Really Fond Of TUBE MICS which That LAUTEN Has a TUBE In it.. Then That WA-87 Is Based Off a CLASSIC MIC.. You Can't go Wrong There. and Then Those LEWITT Mics ain't No Slouch. Which The 540 Subzero Boasts Extremely Low, Self Noise and Can Handle The Highest SPL Levels Of The 3 Mics. BOTTOM LINE: The "BEST MIC" Is Going To Vary From Voice to Voice and Also Record To Record. So Pick & Commit To a Mic And Then Shift Your Focus To Optimizing Your Recordings With The Gear You Have In The Room That Your In. Also KEEP IN MIND, All 3 Of Those Mics Can Be Found Thru Our Zzounds Link In The Description. When You Make A Purchase Thru Our Links That Does Help Support The Channel. Any Questions, Anytime, Lemme Know.

The Quality Of These Units They Are Making These Days, At This Price Point.. ALL SOUND GREAT.
