Alas we had to repost this summary because of technical problems. Roman was the last of the original members of the Homin Ukrainian Male choir based in Manchester UK. Roman was born in Ukraine and ended up in a POW camp in Rimini, where a Male Voice Choir called Burlaka was formed. From the warmth of Italy to the wet climes of Lancashire (via a camp in Sheffield) Roman toured industrial areas with a choir where he met his wife Oxana at a concert in Bolton soon married and settled in Rochdale. He joined Homin in Manchester that initially was led by Eugene Pasika and then by Jaroslav Babuniak for a number of decades. Roman's early work at Marland hospital, led him to save a number of patients from. a fire and on one of the trips that the Homin choir took to participate in the LLangollen Eistedfodd saved a child from the river that flows through the picturesque village. The Homin choir lasted for many decades and many participated in it. It was inordinately kind of those members who were left to attend the mass and panachyda for Roman. Ironically, because of careers and Universities, this was the only event where the three Paraszczak brothers sang in Homin together. Luckily Danyo brought his DAT recorder which did an outstanding job given that it was placed behind the choir and helped by the acoustics of this fine church The members of Homin who made the effort to attend and sing at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of St Mary and St James on John Street include: Петро Вихрій (диригент) Peter Vychrij (conductor and excellent soloist), Стефан Мороз (Stephen Moroz who was in Roman's troop at the Scouts camp in Llysfaen Wales and whose father helped create that camp and was himself a Plastun), Славко Сиваник ( Slavko Sywanyk, who together with his brother MIke and father were the mainstays of Homin for decades), Славко Копчик (Slawko Kopczyk), Мирось Паращак (Myros Paraszczak the middle of 3 sons of Roman and Oxana and the Doctor in the Family,), Мирось Остапюк(Myros Ostapiuk), Стефан Ґалій (Stephen Galij), Отець Богдан Матвійчук (Father Bohdan Matvijczuk a good friend of the family who grew up on West Street and rode tricycles with the Paraszczak brothers) Роман Литвинів, (Roman Lytvyniv), Михайло Сиваник (Mike Sywanyk a founder member of the Homin :"luxury club"), Отець Євген Небесняк (Father Eugene Nebesniak), Михайло Ониськів (Michael Onyskiw), Стефан Замолінський (Stephem Zamolinskyj), Борис Рейнчук (Boris Reynchuk), Богдан “ Даньо“ Паращак ( the youngest of the 3 Paraszcak brothers and the musician responsible for helping the ROH with their "Songs for Ukraine" series), Славко Тимчишин (Slavko Tymczyshyn), Юрко Паращак (Jurij Paraszczak, the oldest of the 3 brothers), Славко Бабуняк (Slavko Babyniak, son of Jaroslav, the conductor of the original Homin choir and a terrific Basss voice), Славко Кривонос( Slavko Kryvonos, son of Kryvonos who predecessed his son as a bass and passed on that resonant voice to his son). Our friends Олег Шкандрій (Oleh Shkandrij) and Іван Кулик (Ivan Kulyk). The entire Paraszczak family came to this mass after having attended a similar one for Roman's wife Oxana, only a few months earlier in the same location. Despite the fact that the various mambers of Homin had not practised this mass together ,the sound is authentically Homin and supported by the melodious tones of Father Ben, who has an excellent voice.

Actuality they don't do the Mass in the Greek way. The music in Greek ritual is monophonic, they have a Slavic polyphonic music. The priest mast face the eastern side of the temple when he serves the mass.

This is, as I'm sure you already know, a Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Liturgy. They are one of the Uniate churches in full communion with Rome. I'm sure the way it's done in the UK differs somewhat from the way it's done in Ukraine, and from the way it's done here in North America, but you must realise that this liturgy was held in the Latin Rite Westminster Cathedral. It wasn't built with the Liturgy of St John Chrysostom in mind, and certain compromises must be made. The Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church follows many of the same conventions as the other Slavic Greek-Catholic churches, similar to those in the Slavic Orthodox churches, including polyphonic singing. It's interesting to note, though, how Latin influence seems to creep in to these Eastern Catholic churches. You'll sometimes hear a good part of the liturgy spoken, for example, and many parishes have rosary services. In North America, you'll even see girl servers in the liturgy, and many parishes have minimalist icon screens, or none at all. Married clergy have been under restrictions until recently, too. That was an issue that caused two waves of mass conversion of Rusyn Greek-Catholic immigrants in the early 20th Century to Orthodoxy. The earlier group converted to the autonomous American branch of the Russian Orthodox Church, and the second became the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

@@dimitriosvlissides5781 I realise that you're going for snark rather than accuracy, but the uninformed might think you're saying that these people were once Latin Rite Roman Catholics who woke up one day and decided to play dress-up. The 'Byzantine' Rite papist churches come from central and Eastern Europe, and from the Middle East, and their native Christian Rite has always been 'Greek'. Some claim unbroken union with Rome from before the Great Schism, most were created from dioceses, individual clergy and faithful who converted to Rome without dramatically changing their liturgical practices. The latter camp did so for varying reasons. Possibly some for religious reasons, but I wouldn't be shocked to learn that most did so for secular reasons. The tiny Romanian Greek-Catholic Church was created at the urging of the government of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Jesuits for increased political power, as one example. On a personal note, I'm extremely sceptical of the Church of Rome. There's no Scriptural or Traditional basis for the Petrine claims.

@@PrenticeBoy1688 The Romanian Greek Catholic Church had over two million members before the Communist takeover and the forced "reunion" with the Romanian Orthodox Church. Belorus was majority Greek Catholic until the tsars took control of the country and abolished the Church through forced incorporation into the Russian Orthodox Church. Stalin did the same to the Ukrainian Greek Catholics whose bishops save one perished in the concentration camps.

One of the best one hour and forty-two minutes a person could wish to spend, listening to this performance by the Anniversary Chorus. A thoroughly enjoyable masterpiece of church choir singing of operatic proportions. Hearing and watching the superimposed photographs on screen, and quickly dispelling in one's mind what were originally stills, the choir brings to life the whole tragic human experience. The Anniversary Chorus, consisting of singers from the length and breadth of the United Kingdom, who have devoted their time and energy rehearsing once a month, express through their sublime voices both their dedication and profound ethnic bond to their paternal roots, instilled, shaped and nurtured by their conductor Bohdan Parashchak. His leadership and understanding of the great Ukrainian composer, Kyrylo Stetsenko, guide the choir along a steadily rising trajectory to then ultimately scale the peaks of a crescendo, thus echoing the heights of the twin towers of a Baroque church. Whilst listening to the Requiem, I was transfixed with emotion and melancholy, as images of the Holodomor appeared on screen, each still describing and illustrating the depths of pain, relentless torture and horrifically crushing death to which Stalin heinously subjected millions of Ukrainians.
