Throwing a Dog Bowl upside down (the bowl, not me)
มุมมอง 4.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I tried making a dog bowl once before and it didn't go as planned. I tried throwing a bowl with a tall wall and then folding it over and out and then pushing it down to the bat. The problem being the clay was expanding as I folded it over, but then needed it to contract as it approached the bat. So I re-thought the idea and decided to try the technique I use to create the juicers to create a do...
Throwing a two pound bowl on the potters wheel
มุมมอง 2.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Here's a demo of throwing a bowl from two pounds of clay and shaping it with a rib. I took my time with this one because it is going to be a part of a set and I want the finished bowls to all be uniform in size. Thanks for watching! Trying to save a collapsed vase on the potters wheel (Bring it back from the dead)
มุมมอง 8023 ปีที่แล้ว
Got a little too aggressive with the clay on my last pull and the wall of the cylinder got too thin for its own weight. I should have just balled it up and started again, but I'm too stubborn and wanted to make it work. Keeping the wheel head slowly spinning and being patient I was able to bring it back from ruin. And having a rib to help move the cylinder back into shape will help a lot. I wil...
Throwing A Wavy Shaped Vase on the Potters Wheel
มุมมอง 2.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
A favored shape of mine is the wavy curved vase. It's easy to make if you can throw a tall cylinder. Add as many curves as you like. I made this one with three pounds of clay. Thanks for watching! Etsy - www.etsy.com/shop/aworkofstoneware Instagram - aworkofstoneware
Throwing a planter on a potters wheel with three different clays
มุมมอง 1.7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I use a black, a red, and a white stoneware to create these colorful planters. They can be a bit tricky to throw because each clay behaves a little differently - despite them all being groggy stonware. Usually, I'll wedge, assemble the clays together, and then bag them and let any moisture differences between the them balance out as they sit. When throwing I can feel the texture and pliability ...
How to: Throwing a small bowl on the pottery wheel (with trimming bonus)
มุมมอง 46K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Here's how you can learn to throw a small bowl on the pottery wheel. Throwing small things is probably the most fun. I like to see things take shape quickly and I also like being able to throw using only my hands - and little tools as necessary. I start by using 3/4 lb of stoneware clay. I'll open up the centered clay, leaving enough clay at the bottom for a foot. Then, throw a straight-walled ...
How to: A Beginner's Guide to Centering Clay on the Pottery Wheel

Here are some techniques to help learn how to center clay on the wheel for the first time or maybe just improve your skills. I hope the tips in the video help you enjoy creating with clay. Throwing a serving bowl from stoneware clay
มุมมอง 8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I love the look of this red clay body - but it will stain your hands if you spend enough time throwing with it on the potters wheel. It does keep some of the red tones when fired and I'll leave the exterior of the bowl unglazed so the clay can be appreciated. The challenge for throwing bowls is keeping the curve a smooth line from the center all the way up to the rim. When I first started to le...
The life of a ceramic bowl from clay to table
มุมมอง 1.8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
#pottery #howitsmade This is whole process from wedging the clay, throwing on the potters wheel, trimming the piece, and waxing and glazing. It takes about a month to make it's way from a ball of clay to the table. (I didn't include the two firings in the kiln. The first firing as a piece of greenware to be bisque'd, and the second in the gas reduction kiln to vitrify the clay.) These bowls are...
Trimming a wheel-thrown ceramic juicer
มุมมอง 2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
After throwing the juicer on the potters wheel I'll wait for the clay to get leather hard. Using a chuck is necessary as the wall of the juicer is a lot shorter then the center juicer nub. The one I use is a bisqued piece, but you can also throw a chuck on the wheel at the same time as the juicer and allow it to firm up while the juicer does the same. I also brush on a layer of porcelain slip s...
Throwing a juicer on the wheel from one piece of clay
มุมมอง 5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I use 1.5 pounds of stoneware clay to create this ceramic juicer on the potters wheel. After it's been fired in the kiln, it's the right size for lemons and limes. A few tips: 1.) Leave plenty of clay in the middle so that you'll be able to carve out the grooves without creating a hole. 2.) Open the clay all the way to the batt. 3.) I think it's easier to carve the juicing grooves while the cla...
Throwing a shallow bowl on the pottery wheel
มุมมอง 76K4 ปีที่แล้ว
#pottery #howitsmade Taking my time to throw a bowl at the studio using 2.5lbs of stoneware clay. The clay was firmer and than I'd like so it took several passes to compress it before forming the wall. Thanks for watching! Etsy - www.etsy.com/shop/aworkofstoneware Instagram - aworkofstoneware

    I find I lose slippage so fast and the clay catches as it gets too dry too quickly. When I watch other Center on TH-cam they just dip their hand in and have no issues it seems for soooo long. Even the sponge… idk maybe I’m a friction machine

    I cried at the end, timing couldn't be more perfect that I discovered your channel and watched this particular clip as I also have a 16yo pup with declining health. As I'm only a beginner I'd be extremely ambitious to make this bowl but one day...thank you for your kind lesson:)

    how do you get the bottom 1/3 centered. I cone up and down all day but that part never gets centered. I can center the top 2/3s with any any issue. Each time i put the bottom 1/3 up, it is still uncentered, so how does it ever get centered?

    I'm glad to hear it is hard because at time I get quite despondent. I am a total beginner (and impatient) which it is totally the wrong approach. Your video is very calm so I"m going back to my wheel after lunch and try and be calm.

      Being impatient in pottery can lead to a frustrating path. I've learned not to rush things or feel rushed. But it took me time (and unforced errors) to learn that. Take the small wins and keep practicing.

    Thanks. I find it hardest to center the clay at the bottom (touching the bat). Any tips on how to correct this?

    • @aworkofstoneware6873
      @aworkofstoneware6873 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I know what you mean. I really have to press the tip of my finger (my strongest middle finger) firmly against the bat and pull it in during coning. Don't use your pinkie. Or you can use the side of your palm. But I don't like that too much because the grog from the clay on the bat will sand down the side of my hand. OR - don't worry about it too much cause it'll get trimmed off later.

    Thank you. I’m struggling with the clay spreading versus going into a cone. I also feel like I have a lot of grog and I lose half my clay before I get it mostly centered. I don’t think I’ve been using my fingertips, definitely not using a sponge. Looking forward to trying!

    • @aworkofstoneware6873
      @aworkofstoneware6873 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know what you mean about losing clay as you center. I had that problem myself, too. Use plenty of pressure and keep those hands opposed to each other. Try some softer clay, too.

  • @sheryliott3694
    @sheryliott3694 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great demonstration. For us beginners, it would be really helpful if you would narrate a bit about each decision you make - why you shape the cylinder sloped in first, how you know when it’s ready to start pushing out, where the pressure in your hands is at various stages of the shaping.
