Is he still alive Ricky skags
The movie 'Bonny & Clude' was playing in the base theater at Ft Greely Akaja during my year there ('73-;74) I was the engineer at the AFRTS radio and TV station, on base. Our local time slot for the radio station was rock, but the DJ announced, "I'll play any record in our library!" I dug out 'Foggy Mountain Breakdown' and handed it to him. He shoved it back in my hand and said, "I don't play shit kicking music on my show!" I shrugged and said, "Then I'll shut down the transmitter as I leaned back against the emergency shutdown. He freaked out, but said, "Give me that damned record!" I hit the restart button. When the 'on air' light came one he switched on his microphone, "Whew!!! We're back! Thanks to our hard working engineer so I''m going to break format and play his favorite song." He played it.. When I was clearing base to go home he had an afternoon slot. I was busy signing papers and turning in keys when he announced, "The best damn engineer I've ever worked with is going home. This is for you, Mike" then he played it again. 'Never piss off the engineer'!
Met him at a fair many years ago
Nice man
Carter is THE MAN
I was privileged to see him perform at a few festivals in the 90’s, and I was struck especially by his unique vocal delivery. It was hard for me to put my finger on it-there was something sort of elevated about it-like those movie stars of the 40’s, Dick Powell of “The Thin Man” series comes to mind. I would put the famous voice of the Dodgers Vin Scully in the same category. It’s not just the diction, but a certain kind rhythm in the delivery, which I guess in music we would call phrasing. At any rate, along with his pleasing singing voice, I found it quite compelling. Learning that he was called “The Voice With a Heart” makes a lot of sense now, as I recalled how moving I found his rendition of Jimmy Brown the Newsboy. RIP Mac Wiseman, I’m sure the angel choir is happy you’re around.
Thanks for sharing
It was great chatting with you guys. Have a safe trip home.
Alison = An American & Global Musical ICON Ms Krauss + Mr . R Plant = Pure Musical Perfection
No Saturday was complete until we watched Lester an Earl on Saturday evening. They actually came to a nearby town and put on a show. Such good memories. I even remembered the Martha White theme song. One day while we were buying groceries I picked up a bag and sang the tune, My wife had never heard it I don't think she was too impressed.
What is the song playing in the background in the beginning of the video? Pls n thanks
She is perfection, I really mean that!
My fondness for Bluegrass music had started during our long road trip, when we were travelling on interstate 44 west, as we were pass through the areas near Rolla Missouri at nighttime our car radio had picked up some vintage bluegrass music station. that was the very first time experience with bluegrass music. then many years later when I had moved from Kansas to Washington DC, I had the opportunity to watch the Performance at the White House. This Lady singer was in that performance I think it was either 1991 or 1992, to me the quality of her voice was the most perfect match to the bluegrass music. That Good old America is still alive in my Memories.
I don't know what in the world would make you think someone wants to hear your voice when they go to a voice you're using these artists and people think they're going to hear those artists they hear you no one wants to hear you and you're not going to make any money off anyone
I think if someone is going to do a doc, on something, they should make sure they have the facts right. This said Reno was born in 1956 then he he retracted malaria in 1949.😮
Cannot understand what people like about her music. She sings traditional songs, but does not use the kind of vocal production used by traditional singers. Her sound is airy and not pure, and she has audible breathing and aspiration - all huge no-nos for singers! Plus I hate the way she capitalized on Doc Watson's Down in the Valley to Pray - which she kind of destroyed. Makes my skin crawl just to think about it!
They are freemasonry members, eating little ones, Jesus help them
Disappointed that Alison like, Doggy is a witch
Listen to him for years nice to know a little about his life love from Canada ❤
I work for standard oil in 1969 for a short time
Thank you for this enjoyable tribute, made all the better by the inclusion of samples of their music.
I grew up just about 15 minutes from Sandy Hook and Keith was our local hero and legend. He will never be forgotten in Eastern Ky amongst many other areas I'm sure.
I love your shows!
somewhere around 1990 we played a front show 4 him at the Lincoln jamboree in Hodgenville Ky, i jammed with some of his band members back stage and he autographed my banjo head with a sharpie marker, it wore off soon from the sweat and beer i spiled on it but i wish i still had it on there, oh well nothing last's forever,, i hope he's still Picken at that big festival in the sky with a lot of my other Picken buddies that iv lost over the years, i wish i could go back and do it all over again...
Great story. Sounds like you’ve had a life well lived.
If the fiddler you mentioned played for Porter Wagoner his name was Mack Magaha. I knew his niece and nephew.
She says it best when she says nothing at all. !
Ralph Stanley is for me, the greatest. His banjo playing and ethereal vocals are on another level. Like other legends of Bluegrass music, Ralph will live on forever.
thanks for spanish.
I can't believe there's no mention of her and Union Station winning the best new bluegrass band award at the 1986 Kentucky Fried Chicken Bluegrass Festival in Louisville. That's when she burst onto the national scene and I was lucky enough to be there.
I look forward to seeing her in concert.

Keith Whitley really go this start with Ralph Stanley..that was the best of Keith.

Carter died at age 41..way too young to die..he was awesome.
She has a beautiful voice!
Truly the best ever ❤
❤❤❤❤
Sooo much better. Than rap. Crap
The age when nothing was faked. When life was real. Screw modernity.
Couldn't have been said better 👍

The greatest bluegrass singer well sea in our life ever
My favorites are scruggs, Fairchild, Crowe, and my dad who met em all .
They were the best both the Gents and the Seldom Scene. They both put on the best stage show. Charlie Waller had the best voice I ever heard.

Love her. Where is the background?
Play at the bar
I was at that festival, 19 years old then. My brother Carson and I rode to the festival on Sunday afternoon with Jim Louis "Jigs" Marshall from Hillsville, VA. First time I had seen a ot of the famous Bluegrass players in person.
That must be a great memory for you.
yes, no mention of her voice! its mesmerizing
Thanks for the nice overview of the Flatt & Scruggs story! Regarding fiddlers (0:30), Paul Warren was a great fiddler and certainly had the longest fiddle tenure with F&S. However, Paul Warren did not join F&S until 1954. To give credit where it is due, between 1948 and 1954, fiddlers with Flatt & Scruggs included Jim Shumate, Benny Sims, Benny Martin, Art Wooten, Howdy Forrester, and Chubby Wise. FUN FACT: Not only was Benny Sims the fiddler on the iconic 1949 recording of “Foggy Mountain Breakdown", Benny sang lead on the 1950 Flatt & Scruggs recording of “Salty Dog Blues”! 🙂
Thanks for the info, hope you enjoyed the video.
The first BG festival was not a financial success. Haney couldn't pay a couple of the artists.
I met Carlton at the memorial festival in 2005, and it seemed he always struggled with money.
A number of future bluegrass greats attended as fans. Sam Bush, John Hartford, Tom Gray, John Starling.
What a wasted talent
She is even better than this video presents. Surprising that there was no mention of her work with Yo-Yo Ma, the greatest living cellist.
Sorry I missed that, thanks for the info. Hope you liked the video.
