Appreciate that, I might just give it a try!
Oh wow, that earthquake must’ve been scary. I’m glad you’re alright, bro! My Mom said you experienced a pretty bad earthquake in Whittier as a kid. Do you remember much of that? Corwin and I were laughing so hard when you talked about your landlord and the pipes 🤣 I can’t believe that horrid smell stunk up your apartment. I hope you and Flo had a lovely little getaway. That’s sweet that your getting closer to her son 🩵 Corwin and I watched The Beach since I remember you mentioning it. Definitely some good laughs lol 😂
Oh I loved The Beach, such a good movie. Glad you got to watch it. Yeah, that darn smelly pipe! Luckily it's fixed now lol. Oh yeah, we had quite a big earthquake when I was a kid in Whittier and I still vividly remember it. Do you guys get any crazy natural disasters in Nevada at all??
@ Yeah, it was trippy and a fun watch 🤪 Thanks, we are, too! Haha, thank goodness. Sorry you had to pay to get it fixed :/ That’s frightening, too 😧 We get fires and flooding sometimes. In 2023, a mountain with a town located near us had a lot of damage from Hurricane Hilary. We personally haven’t been affected directly, thankfully.
Nice to see you survived the quake😔son pops
Still here! Love you Pops.
I watched the whole damn thing. Love seeing you and hearing you! I hope your holiday is relaxing, and full of adventure. Wish I was there to spend some time with you.
Thank you, wish you were here too! Hope you're having a great weekend.
Health first. Since i came here from the allen watts have you ever read the enchiridion by epictetus? There's a download out there somewhere or an online version. It helps me focus on what i can and cannot control. I'm retired but at my last job i was a perfect employee, perfect attendence, perfect. I asked my supervisor if there were any ways i could improve and she looked puzzled and said, "no.". One day the person who relieved me came to work for like the 40th time late. And i had a nice outburst said a few choice things to her. Then i went up to the supervisor on duty and handed her my keys. I told him, "I quit." That was my last job but i have options since i get a pension.
I watched the whole damn thing! I hope to see your lovely lady in future videos. Have a great vacation!
Thank you so much! I will my friend.
We felt that earthquake here in Taichung. I was awake and it hit after midnight. It was the second worst one I've felt thus far. The one last April was the worst and I was in Tainan at the time. I had to deskwarm on Monday from 8-12 and then I got out of there as fast as I could. Been off since thankfully. Watched everything and glad you got your apartment issues fixed. My landlord's pretty good with keeping stuff in order at my building.
Yeah, it really depends on where you're at with these things but the big ones get the whole island shaking. Glad to hear and update on you and also happy that you're on break as well and not stuck in the office. Hope you have a great holiday George!
I watched the whole damn thing neph! 😂🎉 I remember the 6.6 LA EARTHQUAKE totally rocked my world and changed my life. Listen to: "Drone"
I can imagine that must have been quite a big one Unc. Yeah, Drone dropping some knowledge.
@ryfree PS: We hope to Meet Flo in next ur next vlog
I watched the whole damn thing! See if you can still turn up at a local gym and watch the rolls & drills. I feel like anyone running a gym must have been through this before and I'd hope they would understand. Both my shoulders returned to full capacity because I rested fully but I regretted the times when I completely stopped turning up.
I really appreciate your suggestion because I'm already feeling bad for missing out on training. The thing is, I tried going in and telling them I need to roll easy and though they nod in understanding they proceed to go balls to the wall. It's an old school Judo gym. And it's hard for me to resist rolling because my whole being craves it once I step on the mats and see others doing it. I just need to suck it up and be disciplined at saying no.
I lived on a rooftop in S. Korea and that Sh!t Pipe was there too!!! I took some PVC pipe from my school and redirected the pipe. I'm guessing it didn't cause any problems. Something we take for granted in the U.S. is closed sewage systems!! I had no idea I would be so exposed to raw sewage living in developed countries like S.Korea and Taiwan! Lesser developed countries I can understand raw sewage in ditches but man, that pipe smell!!!! Also, it was rudimentary but my Physical Therapy for my broken clavical and scapula did pay off. You should ask the Dr. if they can set you up. ~JB p.s. don't force her inclusion in the videos - you could blur her face like @uyenninh does with her german boyfriend.
I did a youtube channel for a year which i deleted. Mine was more free speech and whatever weird thing i wanted to talk about during the covid period. Do you use tags? Hashtags and tags separated by commas will help the google algorithms pickup and promote your channel to the right people. #expat #Taiwan #ESOL in the youtube studio somewhere in there is a place to put tags separated by commas expat, taiwan, esol, moving to asia, living in asia, etc, etc, etc, you can cut and paste those from one video to the next. Your content is good but it may not be promoted as well as it could be if that is something you have as a goal. Many pro youtubers use clickbait and bombastic titles because it gets them views. I like that you don't do that but you can also look for what is most searched by google and see if you can find something similar. For example if your title was Taiwan Earthquake in there somewhere with #earthquake and your tags and description carried that info it would likely promote your channel to places it isn't reaching now.
Thank you very much for your advice. It's true that I don't spend much time trying to optimize my videos for the algorithm but do put a handful of tags in each one. I must be silly because I never thought about the copy paste thing but I will certainly do that from now on. I would like to grow my channel so I'm always open to these types of tips.
I watched the whole video. I have no idea how i found your channel but I enjoyed listening to what you had to say. I'm a middle aged man who is married to a filipina and i live in Kansas. I have a federal pension and we could live most places so i check out various asian countries for what it might be like to live there. Philippines is extremely crowded and also noisy. Doesn't mean never but i am considering alternatives. Wife is a naturalized us citizen, we are both middle aged. ^^ Edit-- i found your channel from your review of behold the spirit by alan watts.
Thanks for letting me know that as I'm curious how people find my channel and what the demographics might be. It also delights me when I hear that there's some crossover in interest between the different types of videos I make. It sounds like you and your wife are pretty free to explore all types of options. Wish you both the best of luck!
This is not nonsense at all Ryan. I just found your channel a few days ago. I am coming there in 6 months. I will only be able to teach at a cram school. But the info you provide through your videos is extremely helpful to me. It gives me a little bit of a picture as to what i am stepping into. I am also American. From Pittsburgh PA. And will be coming near your area to Linkou. Please keep going with the videos! So important to me now.
I totally understand how you feel as I devoured what videos I could find on Taiwan before I made the big jump. Glad I can help and wish you a smooth 6 months as you prepare for the move.
Having the sewer vents go above the rooftops is a legal requirement in the US.
Plumbing in Taiwan is just as 3rd world as in China.
It definitely ain't like it is back home 😂😂😂
Don't get a tank water heater; get an instantaneous heater.
Well I didn't really have a choice but I'll definitely consider that factor the next time I'm shopping for apartments.
preserve your health . take the bigger desk!
Thank you, I did 😁
Lol, it’s too bad the vacancy didn’t last. The middle desk sounds like the better option. That’s nice that you guys were able to help the bird get out. I hope your week goes well, bro :)
Thanks Sis, I'll try the middle desk for next semester and see how it goes. Offices are boring but crazy in their own way lol. Hope you have a fantastic week as well :)
@ Hopefully you won’t mind your next door neighbors. Haha, true. Sometimes the drama can be entertaining. Thanks bro :)
Can’t you move the middle desk near the door?
Well the office is such that I can't really rearrange the furniture but I took the larger middle desk in the end and the tension evaporated. Yesterday was my last day at work for a few weeks due to Chinese New Year so we'll see how the situation unfolds next semester.
There is no such thing as perfect harmony. Stay with the small desk and figure out space management options… locker options? Desk in the middle of the room seems like a nightmare! No naps there! #stayepic ❤❤❤
Have you looked into a red light therapy wrap and using NIR for about 20 minutes a day?
I actually don't know much about it but was reading up on it a bit today. Have you or anyone you know had much success with it? Do you recommend going to a doctor for it or buying a device to use at home?
@@ryfree Look for the 810-850nm wave length. You can get wraps for 30$ in the states, not sure how much they are there. If you try it let us know how it worked. would be interesting content. Hope you stayed safe from the earthquake, looks like it was a big one.
@@MXCMX5 Okay, thanks for the recommendation and that doesn't sound too expensive at all. About the quake, it was the biggest and scariest I ever felt but got away with only some shattered bottles of oil and honey on my kitchen floor. Hope you're doing well!
Personally, I always hated being stuck in an office to plan (I do better outside on a bench somewhere). So I’d leverage to be allowed more time out of the office. I mean, you ARE a physical education teacher after all. It doesn’t make sense to have you cramped at this little tiny desk that could possibly be doing you physical harm. Maybe THAT is the true physical education lesson here… 😂😂😂
I think that over timo🤪🎉 the belcher will only irritate you more. Pops
Hilarious and spot on Dot! I ended up taking the roomier desk for now but I think I'll just be disappearing from the office more often. I like a good bench outside as well lol.
@ I think you're right about that one Pops 🤣
Take the middle desk. You'll never get used to the belcher.
Thanks Dave, I did. It was a sigh of relief for the both of us. But now we got a new problem: I now sit directly opposite him and every few minutes when I look up from my monitor, he's staring at my face lol.
@@ryfreewhat if you could convince the belcher who wasn’t offered the big desk to take it, go back to your old desk close to the door 🚪? Better nap time no belcher? #justathought
Which recruitment agency did you go through?
@@AYYOluvable I used PIDI (Premiere International). Let them know I sent you if you apply with them!
I started reading this and am not sure I want to continue. So if you believe in this acorn theory and daimon, does he talk about how you figure out what this fate actually is? Or is it just arguments as to why you should believe in it?
It's much more of the latter (offering anecdotes and arguments why the acorn theory is true). That said, you may find insight into your own daimon by reading how others thought of and were influenced by their own.
Which recruiter did you use? Would you recommend them?
I used Premier International (PIDI) and have stayed with them throughout my work life here. They have proven to be loyal and personable so yes I recommend them. If you apply with them, please let them know that 'Ryan sent you.'
It’s cool seeing the area you live in. I like the walk around videos. Also, I’m liking the haircut. You’re looking good brother.
So the protestants shifted the focus from God and one's spiritual growth to meterialism?
In a sense yes but their work ethic and profitable industriousness was inspired by their theology. If it was your 'calling' to be a blacksmith, you better be the best damn blacksmith you can be.
I was going to tell you in your last video that your haircut looked nice, but I didn’t want to look like a kiss ass. Glad Dad approved haha. Lol, that’s a funny experience, but sorry the lady did a lousy job. Those pink trees are so vibrant and pretty. I’m surprised a kid was able to get a rise out of you. Lol, he must’ve been really misbehaving. That’s good that the homeroom teachers mainly handle the disciplining. I hope you have a fantastic Chinese New Year wherever you end up, bro 🐲
Well if the compliments keep piling up, I may just end up going back to the rough woman lol. Thank you anyways for saying that Sis. Yeah, I was totally disappointed in myself for allowing the situation with that class to even happen but some problems just happen out of the blue and there I was lol. Hope you and your hubby are having a great start to the year :)
@ Haha, right! Yeah, no problem, bro. Oh don’t worry, it happens. I’ve lost my cool at work, too. Thank you! I hope you are, too! We are so far :) Although, Corwin had to go to the urgent care yesterday because puss was coming out of his bellybutton for two days. He’s good now and on antibiotics for a skin infection. We just didn’t know that was a thing that could happen lol
@@DianaGrigg Oh, I would love to hear your work stories some time. I can imagine. Sorry to hear about the bellybutton puss (yuck! lol) but really happy to hear that he got the medicine to take care of that. Hope his skin gets back to normal soon.
@@ryfree Haha, sounds good. Yeah, it was pretty gross, but I’m glad the condition is improving. Thank you! I wish you better health this year, bro :)
Well, no wonder you got a punk rocker hair. Kinda makes sense coming from a “rough” lady hairdresser 😂😅 Actually, it’s not bad at all considering you only paid 150 NTD, that’s less than US$5, and no tips😎
Isn't that a ridiculous price by US standards? It does make my punk rocker hair more acceptable to be sure lol. Thank John.
@@ryfree I go to a barber shop operated by a few Korean ladies for a military buzz cut. Easy to clean and worry free of any funny morning hairdo. $20 (NT$600?) per visit, tips not included. Was $15 last March!🤨 Tipping in the U.S. is problematic especially when I find that, quite often, the quality of service that I get does not match that of Taiwan or Japan. 😠
@@johnjalee2009 Oh yes, I feel the same way! The price point and quality of service you get in Asia where no tips are expected makes what you get in America seem absurd to tip. Here, if I throw in a tip I get a huge reaction of appreciation whereas in America I'll be loathed if I don't cough up an extra 20% lol.
Sorry! I didn’t know you didn’t like the cut! Well… it looks good on you anyway. And it’ll grow out, yeah? :) And yes! If you plan on going anywhere for the lunar New Year, you need to get on it with tickets! They’re only going to get more expensive.
I totally appreciated your compliment Dot and you're absolutely right, it'll grow out relatively quickly lol. Thanks, I DO need to get on any tickets ASAP. Hope you're having a great start to the year :)
It’s not that bad. Similar to contemporary Euro cuts. Doesn’t matter: difference between bad hair cut and good haircut is3 weeks
Absolutely right Todd, I can live with a Euro cut for a few weeks at least. Thanks my friend.
A more indepth video on your techniques and advice about classroom management and problem kids would be awesome. Always look forward to your videos!
Okay, thank you for the request! Much appreciation for watching as well.
Me and my GF were talking about spending some time in Yuanlin for Winter Break. You could come up and meet the teachers there at the clubhouse they made.
Okay not a bad idea. I'm cooking up plans now but would love to meet up with you at some point.
I guess your to upset about your hair cut sir hehe , come visit our country the Philippines.
It's certainly on my mind and appreciate your advice! Thank you my friend.
I don't know if my feelings are right to write... But I think emojis will do a better job...😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 You made the whole narration about ya hair very interesting....😂😂😂😂😂
😁😁😁
So how was the Taiwanese Doogie Howser?😆😅🤣 The intern looks 15 probably because he started studying in medical school after graduating from high school. Unlike medical schools in the U.S., formal medical training in Taiwan is an undergraduate degree program. If he’s a first year resident, he should be about 25 years old, since it takes 7 years to complete his degree program.
LOL, the Taiwanese Doogie Howser totally convinced me of his precious expertise but my girlfriend who could actually understand what he was saying told me later that he was an idiot that confused the situation. Thanks for letting me know that about the schooling involved!
I worked as an English in Taiwan 20 years ago. I hated the dancing and shows. I noticed they are paying the same wages as 20 years ago.
Yeah, it certainly ain't a job for everyone and you occasionally have to gulp down your pride. As far as wages are concerned, I know that the pay scale for public school teachers has increased since I moved here in 2022. That said, a lot of people do complain that the salary hasn't kept pace with the cost of living.
@ most English teachers aren’t able to get the public school or international school (TAS) contracts. So, it is cram schools or small private schools where most teachers will find employment, and those wages have stayed stagnant for 20 years. Korea is a way better option for those with a BA and a TEFL to earn a good living. Taiwan will only get worse with its plummeting birth rate and over supply of teachers. If you don’t have a BEd, don’t go to Taiwan. You will not be paid well!
@@paulwang1508 Well there is a big demand for public school teachers and it only requires a bachelors degree and sub teaching license (which is as simple as a $50 application for US citizens). I'm sure Korea is a fine option as well and has its benefits.
@@ryfree I am not trying to be a negative Nelly. I can tell you are very happy living in Taiwan. The ROC is a very beautiful country, and , for the most part, most Taiwanese people are wonderful. However, there are not the same opportunities there anymore, and this won’t get better. That was my only point. Korea still has better opportunities. As for sub teacher’s license, a four year BA not a three year BA is needed, and if you are not an American, lots of paperwork and money, depending on state, are also needed. You are right the public option is doable, but way easier if you are an American.
@@paulwang1508 Well I do appreciate the negative side but just felt adding the positives would balance it out. But you're right, other nationalities have it harder when it comes to the sub teaching license. I'm sure Korea is still a better deal in many ways but one factor for me is that I'd rather be learning Chinese than Korean as I find that language more valuable. I also wanted a warmer country when I decided to come here but after experiencing the brutal summers and plethora of mosquitoes, I'd be willing to skip the climate as a perk.
You wore the santa suit well and the belly made it more believable🎅 Wow, I’m glad you were able to attend this parade 🤩✨ A lot of nice details on the uniforms. That’s great that you danced and everyone appreciated your enthusiasm. I really enjoyed watching Braveheart even though it was sad. Scotland looks beautiful. I see why you love the film. I hope you, Flo, and the rest of your loved ones have an amazing and Happy New Year 🎉✨
OMG, I'm so glad you watched it! Had Corwin seen Braveheart before? Yeah, it was a beautiful tragedy and really made me long for Scotland (though I believe many locations were also filmed in Ireland). Thank you as always for watching Sis. Hope you and your hubby have a fantastic start to the New Year and look forward to any updates on you guys or the family!
@ Right, I’m so glad I finally watched it, too. Definitely a masterpiece 🤩 William was very admirable and righteous. The princess was one of the prettiest girls I’ve ever seen. Corwin had seen it before and enjoyed it. I wondered if parts of it were filmed in Ireland. Both countries seem to be rich with beauty. Yeah, no problem, bro. Oh wow, thank you so much 🫶🏼 I look forward to hearing about all the good things 2025 will bring you and your family ✨
Yea I couldn't dress up like santa like that, but I'm grateful there are people in the world happy enough to do that and just have fun :)

Thanks Unc! It was the first time I had danced in public in awhile and boy oh boy it certainly felt good and made me think of you. Hope you have a great New Year as well!!
To answer your question about marching band, we hold it :) I agree, teaching is so much fun but absolutely exhausting. And lastly, nice hair cut :)
Aha! Thanks for giving me the inside scoop on that dot ;-) Yes, truly fun and fulfilling yet certainly drains the battery. Thanks! It was with a new barber and only cost $5 USD. I'm not exactly sure if I love it or not but I've had worse lol.

Thanks, hope you enjoy the place as much as I did.
Marry Christmas Ryan ..
Merry Christmas Nicholas! Hope everything is going well for you with China.
@@ryfree Thanks I'm just very busy setting up my new home .. The prices for things are super cheap to setup my new life in china for cooking equipment and studio equipment has only set me back around $2000 also I never thought I could have a diet of beef steak with salmon and chicken breast the west has gotten too expensive nowadays in the UK .. I'm happy I have gotten out before the economy get much worse in the UK ..
Hey there Ryan! I hope you are well? How about covering their faces (E.g blurring them out), wouldn’t that be okay?
Totally okay and a good compromise. Just a bit more work I suppose but thank you for the suggestion!
Such a lovely arboretum especially with that pretty pond. It’s a real shame that you’re having to deal with tendinitis in your shoulder and that it may you keep you from doing some of the things you love. I’m sorry to hear that. That was neat that you tried acupuncture even though it was a bit painful. It’d be interesting to inhale herbal mists. I’m glad to hear you’re sticking with the Chinese class despite the difficulties. That’s great that you found helpful apps. Haha, I could see the students feeling uncomfortable about the jujitsu positions. I would’ve been hesitant in middle school, too. Did you hear about this TH-camr and expat, Elliot Eastman, who was living in a dangerous part of the Philippines, and was murdered? Crazy story, but I’m not surprised since he was living in a rough area. Have you ever been in a sketchy area when traveling and been scared that you might get kidnapped for a ransom because people think you’re an American with money? Far fetched I know, lol I hope you, Flo, and her son have a wonderful Christmas 🎅🎄❤
Well luckily nature has a miraculous ability to heal if we don't push our bodies too far so I'm really going to be a good boy until these shoulders feel better. Hopefully I'll be able to get back to training soon and not reinjure them. The problem is I would take a week off then go back to the gym and tell everyone I needed to take it very easy which they would reply, 'Okay we understand' then they would proceed to go balls to the wall and I'd have to respond. Still my fault though for even going. Anyways, I appreciate your encouragement Sis! So I hadn't heard about Elliot Eastman but I just read a couple articles after you mentioned his death. That really sucks but it looks like he was in fear of his life before the tragic event happened. Sometimes you gotta trust that instinct and get out! I've been in some sketchy areas and situations but luckily nothing dire or that resulted in injury. But yes, being a Westerner in a poor country will paint a target on your back pretty quickly. Thank you for the Christmas wishes! I'll be dressed up as Santa Claus at work then hopefully having dinner with Flo and her son after. Hope you and Corwin have a great Christmas too!! :)
@ Yeah, it is miraculous how the body has the ability to heal. Well, I’m happy to hear there’s hope for your shoulders. Letting them rest longer should do the trick. Aw, I wish they went easier on you, though. That was cool of you to look into it. Yes he was fearful and should’ve left with his wife. It’s good you’ve managed to stay safe. Unfortunately, that’s true. That’ll be fun for you and the students 🎅 Have a wonderful dinner together 🍽️ 🎄 Thanks bro :)
I've lived in Chiayi for 2 years now and never knew about the place you walked through here 🤣 great catching up! I remember when I was in a class that was just above my level when I first came to Taiwan... I always felt like an imposter but looking back it was probably the best way to improve my skill level. Give it a couple months and you'll notice a difference! You just need to get over that hump
Thanks for the encouragement Tice, I'm sure it'll pay off in the end. Yeah, Chiayi had some really nice charms that I continue to discover the longer I stay here. Let me know if you ever come into town.
