FAB 2024 LAUNCH - THIS ISN'T A PROFESSIONAL TOOL
Hi everyone,
Me again. Just thought to do a round 2 after spending some more time looking at Fab, the small QOL's since (not really), and touching on Epic's awful communication since launch.
Doing these as I am passionate about the field we are in, and as Fab hold's all the power here I hope making these lead to change / productive conversations in some way.
Much Love,
Aaron

Hi everyone, Appreciate anyone who made it through my thoughts, or even for stopping by. Keen to here what everyone is feeling of course but these are my initial takes. Also please appreciate the atrocious thumbnail. I wouldn't be so fussed outside of the fact this impacts our livelihoods directly, and the introduction of Fab (and the imposing shutdown of Bridge) seems to have taken none of tha...

Re upload upscaled in 4k as 1080p looked jank and steppy. Spent the afternoon playing with / testing a way to animate static foliage meshes assets. Thought to put together a small little sequence. Enjoy! Instagram: chromadojo Artstation: www.artstation.com/aaronwestwood
Just got an email that Quixel is reinstating Megascans on Bridge! The battle has been won lol Now to download everything since I can't trust them to handle themselves properly in the future lmao
This is a little bit of a rant but this was one of my biggest concerns with Fab coming out. Constantly making changes without considering major workflows is really frustrating in an industry that is make or break around good workflows. At least with changes to the engine you dont have to upgrade to the new version if they remove or change something you use or need... but with Fab it has the potential to retroactively ruin workflows for everyone no matter where you are coming from. I hope that they can make Fab like bridge for all quality content because that should be or is the whole goal/selling point of Fab in my opinion. But so far with the release of Fab it has only justified my initial worries and concerns! I dont mind new work flows but they should render the old ones obsolete by pure function and sheer adoption rates before becoming the standard and so far Fab has been nothing but a thorn to my workflows by basically sending them back in time and thats just not what you want to see from what is supposed to be the next big thing. I hope it will get where it needs to be soon because I do see the potential in it. But come on! In my opinion it is a terrible first impression.
I need more drama
Agree. FAB is trash for artist. We need bridge back.
Not to mention the fact that we cannot even remove assets we have added to our library or hide them or have a favorites list. Fab is so bad!
Very good info, now I'm scared to open some old UE projects. Unrelated, but I am very interested in environment creation and your work is insanely good, so I figured I'd ask. I have done some vfx work, can find my way around Blender or C4d and am most familiar with compositing. I was wondering if you can recommend any courses or recources. Also for film/vfx would you recommend starting with GAEA , World creator or even houdini?
Really appreciate the effort you've put into this so far. I think it's also worth bringing up how the "collections" (or "environments" as they are called now on FAB) are much more different. On Bridge you can open up a "Collection" page and see all the used assets and individually download them with all the great functionality you mention in this video. On Fab you cannot see or download any of the used assets individually. Of course as the final nail in the coffin, once you actually download the whole collection from FAB there is no thumbnail images in any the folders. That, paired with the inability to search up model IDs makes collections utterly useless for anyone that's not working with UE.
bye to my 3 second exporting to blender, even the name fab sucks
Whoever made the decision to replace the marketplace with this deserves to be fired, it is such a bad idea
Sadly it looks it came from way up top, no way for the owners of the company to fire themselves LOL
It's quite unbelievable they didn't care about how this would disrupt workflows, I don't even feel like working right now, I feel stuck
@@SRLStud Baffling doesn’t even begin to describe the oversight. I’m with you also, and the zero comms from Epic since just isn’t helping. Hopefully something soon.
A replacement or continuation of Bridge really is needed as this video points out, we've gone backwards!
@@neil1375 totally! Backwards to 2005. This couldn’t have fallen shorter.
Guys, the community need exactly more of this, WE HAVE TO REACT... I just think EPIC as owner of Unreal Engine somehow might have interests that people dont use other tools like 3ds max, Cinema 4d, Blender etc... So I guess as now they own all megascans assets, maybe this is them trying to force people into Unreal. Anyway I would still buy assets for 3ds max if it would be rolled back as it was in Quixel. Poor guys who created Quixel must be super sad to see whats been happening. Aaron big thanks for speaking up, big fan here! Love your work.
Yea it sucks. What was epic thinking... I believe they purposefully hamstrung it for tools outside UE5 and it sucks inside UE5 as well btw. Just slightly less so.
Abby is AI
Is Abby AI? As you mention that I’ve looked at a lot of the replies and they do seem very robotic but I just put that down to PR talk..
Fab e absolute trash rn, it's so bad
You're right. I just want the Bridge to work
Thanks for making this video. I was excited to discover how Fab would be better than Bridge and was baffled to see the abomination they created
Absolutely disastrous launch, it's so bad.
The hard lesson I learned about Epic, after moving from Unity to Unreal is that they have a tendency to change or remove something before coming up with viable replacements for it. And when the community outcry is MASSIVE, they all just completely ignore the people who are complaining.
Will Epic listen to their users though? My experience after requesting over many years that the vault would be more manageable with a better per item (not package) search but they hardly changed a thing. This is not progress and will just slow everyone down. Epic do incredible things and I fully support them as a company but we need better communication and tools that address all our issues. Quixel once allowed channel packing too but Epic removed it. I really miss that feature too.
Yea, i don’t see how this even benefits us UE users
I can't export any twinmotion 2024 projects to unreal 5.4. For me, only the datasmith twinmotion plugin appears and the twinmotion content plugin does not appear for me. What do I do?

This feels like developers from the year 1990, were asked to build an asset site. FAB looks like it was built by soneone who should be on the show, 'American Hoarders." There is no real organization. Everything is just dumped into huge unsorted piles. An the a positive note, I'm being forced to learn howbto fix problems with assets, myself.
This FAB is a garbage, how they even make this new service and not prepare any plugins
Agreed
Im useless without quixel bridge to be blunt
The pace of development on Mixer really made me wonder about Quixel, so I avoided Bridge. Dodged a bullet, for once.
they've already removed the custom asset import/export features in bridge. that's a huge blockade for individuals
Do you mean in the UE Bridge plugin ? If you have an older version standalone Bridge installer on one of your hard drives (before version 2024.0.4) if you click on that installer it will overwrite the latest Bridge update and return Bridge to a useable state where you can choose where to export.
@@stevietee3878 i can't seem to find any version below 2024.0.4 importing into bridge/exporting into other dcc's because being directed to fab for assets you've imported into bridge is kinda wild.
epic feeling like they're turning into EA
its like they picked the worst from EA and Adobe and decided to combine them into one package
agreed 100% let's send that link every days to epic
Fab has done what I feared it would do. Turn all Epics stores into SketchFab; a dumping ground for low quality garbage flooded to the point of unusability, topped off with a mountain of copyright infringement. Already stumbled across ripped assets from Tarkov, Zelda and PUBG
Ye man this is such a shame to see. I got into ue when 5.0 came out and absolutely loved how easy it was to open up bridge inside the editor and quickly drag and drop and see in about a second if a rock was the right rock for my scene. Not only does importing take alot more time now but its gone from something brainless to something tedious and draining on your mental when creating. What a shame
Search in UE marketplace is completly boring expirience and unfortunately we got this with Quixel now(
As an Unreal user, I'm glad that all the wonderful things from Sketchfab are now included. Who doesn't like digging through other people's trash?
I watched one of your first videos on this and before watching I literally just thought I was doing something wrong and that I didn't understand the workflow.
@@Iamjake1000 Thankyou for watching both 💛 You weren’t doing anything wrong, I thought the same when I looked at it initially! Turns out there is zero workflow now.
I just knew as soon as I saw the FAB name that this was going to be a car crash of epic proportions. (pun not intended)
@@KernitTheFont same. The name is as cheap as the product…how fitting.
I agree! I'm not joking in the slightest when I say this but the literal moment I saw the name Fab my honest initial thought was dear Lord this will be a disaster based purely on the name alone. In my opinion it screams that it was designed by a marketing team and not a creative team. Hopefully they can get Fab where it needs to be but in my opinion the choice to go the tiresome modern day route of, we will just release something broken and/or break everything without regard and we will fix it later, is extremely worrisome. I hope that Epic isn't going in this lowest common denominator direction of thinking because I have always put Epic on a pedestal of professionalism and being trend setters of how to conduct ones self as a business...but honestly so far with Fab I don't think or feel those things at all. The Unreal team is awesome and I don't I don't want to sound too doom and gloom here but they are owned and managed by Epic, and if Fab is a sign of a new way of Epic conducting themselves as a business... Let's just say it has me extremely concerned for the future of unreal engine too. I know this might all sound overly dramatic but I have been around long enough to see many exact moments in time where companies began a downfall or downward trend in their thinking and focus and this Fab thing is a glowing example of that type of problematic thinking and decision making if they are not careful. As an example I called Ubisoft out years and years ago when I first saw a similar shift in their focus as a company and people called me crazy initially and look where that company is now. It can take years sometimes for a company to undo the good they have built and for it to become extremely noticeable but it all begins somewhere. I'm not in anyway trying to shine a light on myself and say I'm smart or special or anything, it literally just comes down to the fact that history tends to repeat itself and it isn't hard to pick up on the patterns when you have seen them often enough. And again I can't scream loud enough that this Fab thing is an extremely worrying choice when considering patterns of downfall.... worrisome enough for me to post long winded comments on channels, forums ect instead of working on my projects. Hopefully I'm just becoming an older, cynical, complaining person that doesn't know what he is talking about, because that would be the best outcome in this situation. But I have unfortunately been right about these things way too many times in the past after having seen them over and over. Goodness! probably my longest comment ever. If anyone made it through all of that you have my condolences, praise and thanks for whatever that's worth to you.
Also not to mention that stuff on Fab is supposed to be behind the paywall soon. Their move (and announcement) for Fab is basically strip down everything proven and good about Bridge and Megascans and put a price on it at some point soon and allow Fab to be saturated with generative AI as a cherry on top.
@@KlaudioLadavac-od4oc ……all as an incentive for us to spend money? Surely they would give us more credit than that, we’re not just some zombies with a wallet. Great point though, I wish I mentioned that soon they will be charging for this trash. Unbelievable.
@@aaronwestwood One of the things i wished for when i heard about Fab and setting a price on Megascans is for them to keep current Megascans library free indefinitely and then everything new added to Megascans, 2025 and beyond, to be sold and some reasonable price. I could understand this move in some way if it means to keep Megascans alive and regularly adding more new high quality content AND Bridge really being the starting base line of UI/UX. But they messed it so hard though...
This is so true. Firstly: Where the f are the filters and the categories. Secondly you cant find sh** what you want because of that. Thirdly the Unreal marketplace was specific for Unreal Engine users like me wich is was super easy to use AND it was in the Epic Games launcher, not in your browser or a stupid plugin. Thirdly the Megascans plugin in UE5 was/is so brilliant and easy to use, so why are they taking that away from us?
F-cked And Broken
It's clear that Bridge needs to be reactivated while they sort this rather than just telling users to deal with it.
@@tpisel I absolutely agree
And why would you buy something on FAB that's only available in FBX format, when the exact same model is 10% cheaper on CGTrader. It's going to take them months to put this right.
they emailed me today saying, 'if you didnt know, we encourage users to manually set up assets'
Thankyou for making these videos man, tempted to make a video too. The more of us that make it known how bad this is the better.
Hey Sketchy! Please please do, reach and saturation of feedback will be so helpful getting issues seen, and obviously with your channel size that’d be so amazing. I know a few people also making vids after mine so anyway I can help, if you decide to just let me know :)
@@aaronwestwood Absolutely man I didn't actually realise how bad it was until I watched your video, I had no clue they were abandoning bridge. I think what I'm tempted to do is to make some sort of mass Cinema 4D folder with all my assets from megascans in it with linked materials that could sort of function as something to make workflows a bit faster temporarily. I don't have every megascan, but it could at least hold people over to work with that scene file open so it's not needed to link every material and asset every project.
@@Sketchyvisuals I’m hoping with the amount unanimous feedback this ship gets corrected, however having radio silence from Epic is not a good sign. Fingers crossed the more saturated the feedback, the more prompt a response. Hopefully you won’t have to go to any efforts building you own method, when the most perfectly functional one is sitting right there in their hands.
@@aaronwestwood That's a good point actually. I definitely want to make a video because a massive concern for me with teaching people, and I saw someone comment this on your first video is how this affects people newer to the software and making it drastically harder and more frictious for people to learn how to use assets. It's going to drain the confidence of a lot of less experienced people.
@@Sketchyvisuals that comment broke my heart also. I know the one. I consider myself rather experienced using Bridge everyday for the last 5 years or so, and even then I see myself having confidence/willingness zapped as I’m slowed down to this snail pace workflow. I can’t imagine a newcomer looking at this.
I can see this massively effecting art teams across most industries that depend on this stuff. What a mess.
I wonder if the people at quixel regret selling Quixel to epic games?
I would have to imagine so. Quixel was so clearly put together by artists who care a great deal about this craft. Fab is clearly put together to make money, without the artist in mind. How this translates to artists spending money I have zero clue. So out of touch.
Fnck Fab
Also: When using Bridge now for anything that you didn't download before it just shows this "Get it on Fab" button. Then when you press that 9 out of 10 times it just goes to the Fab Starting page where you then have to retype the name (because search with assetID returns 0 results) and are bombarded with dozens of assets where you then have to eyeball which one looked like the one from bridge? And most of the times you can't even find it there then. So this "Get it on Fab" button leads to nowhere in most cases. And even if you find what you need then you are supposed to download the separate Zip files and put it in your own folderstructure on your hard disk and keep remembering it was there for the next months to come?
@@JonasNoell yeh it’s just not on, and I’ll do video after video and will keep sending on until something is done. Zero perfect chance I use Fab, not like this. As I said in this video, they need to rollback to how it was before. Every single piece of modern software operate on an update/rollback premise…or at least protect it as an option. I wish I mentioned that in my video.
Why does eveything that was great always turns to crap
Right 😢
This is called progress and is made by people who are not confused by experience.
Because Epic wants to fire 70% of their store staff that was spread across 3 store fronts and consolidate it all into 1 store with 30% of the staff.
Ever notice how things that result in "happy" are quickly taken away?
FAB is such a shitshow, I was in the middle of a project using bridge and now I lost all that functionality mid work... And yeah the shitty assets being mixed with quixel assets is a pain in the search engine. But as you said, the worst thing is the downloading. Bridge was amazing, why in gods name did they get rid of it.....
Pinning this bro, as this is the raw reality. It’s so incredibly unfriendly, and I’ll do everything I can to not use it.
All they had to do was to update the quixel bridge soft bringing UE marketplace stuff cause most people use their Epic account to connect to Quixel Bridge, then adapt the plugins to different DCC. Then allow people to buy through the app or find they bought assets (on the fab website) and find their assets. Now that Bridge is disappearing, what about texture made in Mixer ?
