Sounds like what they experienced in Thailand, there is ofc detective work needed for any song that is clearly mining/channeling a state of mind- not necessarily the reasons for his departure. I read they look back at that trip as a point where they lost control of the ship and clearly their principles. It is not fun to witness actual human degradation, the kind that involves child prostitution and the poverty of the third world. He was obsessed with the photographer Kevin Carter who was haunted by what he saw in war torn Sudan and killed himself. Also, the price of that kind of searing intellectual honesty as fuel is that the most basic of human interaction involves horrors, what the kabbalists call "the shading of god." It is hard to make peace with if your whole self is based around a certain puritanism that has elevated you yet also brought you to extremities. To paraphrase Allan Watts "it is not wise to emulate Jesus, look where he ended up"

Manic street preacher's and Therapy? Two of the best bands, Wales Ireland Scotland and England really do produce the best bands in the world.

It’s an incredible album that ages brilliantly, nothing is out of time. It’s up there with Smiths- smiths, Cult-Love, ok computer and stone roses for me, that’s good company.

Possibly the best proof of how much Richey improved on guitar. Love when he is mixed this high.

I was 14 when I first heard this, led to it after hearing the big hits on the radio in the late 90s. Amazingly, even though I was from the whitest, safest, most secure sheltered little middle class world, I totally resonated with this album. I’ll never forget walking the dog every day, with this in my headphones, and thinking “wow, I can’t believe what they’re singing about. But I love it so much.” I couldn’t believe pop bands talked about things like this. The pinnacle of this love affair was V99, my first music festival at 15, with my two little white, nice, little, polite friends, and we’re there singing our hearts out to Faster.

The amazing thing is that the lyrics are so complex and deep, almost like they’d be better suited to a book, and yet James still created extremely memorable hooks to them. And you wouldn’t think the words would work as lyrics, they’re awkward and don’t fit any musical meter, but it just seems to fit. It’s disconcerting at first, but over time, it knits together in your mind and fits perfectly.

it's sad to think how at the end you could hear Richey playing more, and he didn't even sound bad, simple and humble, nothing too fancy. but he was definitely improving and then we never got to hear him again:( wherever he is I wish him nothing but peace and a calm heart.

If Edward Munchs "The Scream" was a record, it would be The Holy Bible. It's a terrifying work of genius. RIP Richey, you are missed

I remember seeing James walking along the river Thames Reading 94 looking very down and on his own very weird experience as I was in a bad situation after a long relationship with some beautiful girl ended

Greatest album of all time imo.

It's incredible sometimes watching how much James can still play on the guitar while singing. He's genuinely doing two lead roles at the same time. Same on La Tristesse Durera, Of Walking Abortion and Motorcycle Emptiness. He's two people rolled into one.

Give this album the respect it deserves.

It's such a bleak and dark album. You can hear a bit of Richie on Everything Must Go, but there's more optimism, progressing towards the future in the songs.

Nicky Wire is confused that Richey would write stuff from an angry place ,he keeps talking about left or right in politics .....this is his biggest mistake. Richey was writing from a very dark place, yes it was honest and truthful but there was rage, he took most of it out on himself by self-harming but he also projected it in his lyrics. This simplistic view that people are good or bad because of their political views is very childlike, humans are complex with many different layers. The quicker the human race learns to transcend politics, religion , morality and weakness the better. Deal with the anger, you deal with the problem and so on.

THE UK VERSION IS THE MORE SUPERIOR VERSION IMO.

FFS, if only Channel 4 hadn't recorded / aired the complete set; this was the Manics at there very, very best. I bought all their first 3 albums on release and The Holy Bible to this day remains in my top 10 best albums of all timr. Whilst Everything Must Go was decent it sadly swung a change in direction which was not my cuppa tea. If i could turn back time (twice) i would go back to this set, and any Saints game played at The Dell.
