Artist Diaries 🎨 Painting what you know 🌳Winter tree oil painting ❄️
Artist Diaries 8
Welcome to the eight episode in my Artist Diaries series!
This week I visited the grounds of a stately home in search of winter painting inspiration.
I saw ducks, squirrels, grey wagtails and a beautiful swan as well as the lovely effects of dappled sunlight on the branches of a winter tree.
In this video I talk about painting what you know and the benefits of painting what you’re familiar with. Painting nature that I’ve seen firsthand is a large part of this artist diaries series!
After exploring this lovely spot, I ended up creating a winter tree oil painting.
Sit back, relax and enjoy a chilly day out in winter followed by a Timelapse of a winter tree oil painting!

Art Goals 2025: Reflecting and planning ahead 🎨
มุมมอง 19621 วันที่ผ่านมา
To mark the end of 2024, I’m setting myself some Art Goals for the new year and reflecting on my time as an artist this year. This year was definitely challenging and I failed to achieve some of my goals but I’ve also had some success. This video is all about reflecting and planning ahead which will hopefully be helpful if you’re setting your own art goals for 2025. It’s a lot of rambling 😂 but...

Loch Garten A few months ago, me and my friend went on a holiday to Scotland. We spent the first week volunteering on a nature reserve and in the second we travelled around the west coast of Scotland visiting a few islands along the way. The place was beautiful and I was so inspired to paint when I got home. I’m planning on creating a new oil painting for each of the places we visited or of one...

มุมมอง 1822 หลายเดือนก่อน
It’s been a while! For my first video in what seems like ages, I thought I’d do a tiny oil painting tutorial. If you want to know how to paint a mushroom, this painting tutorial will hopefully be a good place to start. Paint along with me as I attempt to explain the steps I took to create this mushroom painting! This is my first tiny oil painting tutorial so I’m a little rusty! But there will h...

Stunning❤
Thank you ☺️
Interesting, I just took a snowy photo today of an old springhouse with a sycamore tree, for my next painting attempt. Great job on the tree bark with the branch shadows. Thanks Rach for the winter walk inspirations!
No problem! Thank you for watching ☺️ that sounds like the start of a lovely painting. We’ve had quite a bit of snow here as well although it’s clearing a bit too quickly for me to get out and film it for the next video!
‘Paint what you know’ and ‘Write what you know’ have been the basis of the two art forms for such a long time. In reality, certainly in my case, what I ‘know’ rarely fits into creativity at all. I don’t disagree with ‘Paint what you know’ if what you know is paintable however, in my case I prefer ‘Paint what you like’. I love nature, I love what it has given me in the past but, although I have learned some things about nature, I don’t know enough about it to say ‘I know it’. That said, I still like to attempt landscapes, I still like to attempt wildlife but I also like urban landscape’s, and I like to attempt portraits and still life. I think it is right to ‘paint what you know’ especially when you can expand that knowledge by showing and discussing those paintings as you do. For me though, ‘painting what I like’ means I can learn about things I don’t know and ignore what I find I really don’t want to know about.
That’s very well put :) I found that as I was talking about the subject, it was drifting more towards the fact I was painting what I love rather than just painting what I know. I like to paint a variety of subjects too. There’s so much out there to be inspired by, it’s hard to stick to just one thing. And with nature you can be quite varied, painting wildlife, plants and landscapes. I always like the finished painting a bit more though when it’s of something I’ve seen for myself :) Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment ☺️
Quite a few years ago we had a holiday at Enbo on the coast north of Inverness. The woodland up there was magical, lots of drooping moss hanging from the branches, something I have never seen locally probably due to air pollution. Scotland is a magnificent country far removed from the Fens of where I live. Love the painting of the Crested Tit and well done for spotting Goldcrests, I have only seen them once, so small and fast, never managed a photograph.
That sounds so lovely! Especially all the moss on the branches. I really enjoyed it in Scotland. The landscapes were beautiful the further north we travelled. I managed to see another goldcrest last week but I had the same issue. It was so high up and moved so quickly I didn’t get a photo of it. It was still lovely to see though 😊
Studio tours are always fun!
Good idea! Thank you ☺️
Lovely painting. Excellent work
Thanks very much! 🙂
Nice painting. Close to where I grew up. I've seen this bridge many times.
Thank you ☺️ I really enjoyed Stirling although it’d be nice to spend longer than a day there next time!
Interesting. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Love the painting, full of winter colour. I actually like the long dark nights of winter. I feel more inclined to do some art, read a book and generally do stuff in the house as it’s dark and cold outside. I also like winter because you can always get snuggly and warm but in summer, it isn’t always easy to keep cool.
Thank you! ☺️ You make very good points! I love being inside with a good book and a cup of tea at this time of year. Especially if it’s a bit stormy or really cold outside!
Rachel, this is a superb video and your thoughts explained perfectly. I especially like the way you consider your work, evaluating what you have done and how you might do things differently. The best thing about being an artist is that we only get better and better the more we paint. I learn something new each time I paint (I have been painting for over seventy years). I love your work, be free, be loose and use paint with abandon, when you sell your work it is then that you buy more paint! I wish you well on your never ending art journey, much respect from an old artist.
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely comment. I’m glad you enjoyed the video and it’s wonderful you’ve been painting for so long! I’m trying to use more paint now and not restrict it so much! I had some bought for Christmas so I can maybe be a bit looser with it now! ☺️
Well done Rachel. Not only did you create a beautiful painting but you also created a wonderful edit. Neither of which are easy.
Thanks very much! Yes the editing is always challenging so that’s lovely to hear 😊
Beautiful experience ❤
Thank you ☺️
Winter birds like redwings and fieldfares 🐦
Fieldfares might be one of my favourite winter birds!
Another very nice painting Rachel! Shades of green are always a challenge, but you nailed it. And thanks for the relaxing foggy winter walk. Reminds me of the winter landscape paintings in my area - Andrew Wyeth Pennsylvania country. We have an Ash borer insect killing all our Ash trees here as well. Your love and knowledge of nature is wonderful!
Thank you ☺️ Oh yes greens are always a challenge! I’m glad you enjoyed the walk in the fog. It’s quite peaceful looking for close up wildlife when you can’t see too far ahead of you. I’ve just had a look at a few Andrew Wyeth paintings to remind myself of them and some of the trees he painted would definitely look at home in the foggy landscape here! That’s a shame to hear the Ash trees where you are having a tough time of it as well. They’re one of my favourite trees so I hope we don’t lose too many! Thanks again for watching 😊
I’ve been loving your videos, this has inspired me to create my own goals for the coming year, good luck on reaching your goals! ❤
Thank you for your lovely comment ☺️ I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the videos and it’s lovely to hear this one has inspired you to make your own goals :) Thanks for watching!
I really enjoyed ur video. Ur a very good teacher.
Thank you for your lovely comment ☺️ I’m glad you liked the video!
Rachel … what’s happened to you? So confident… lovin* it … Auntie Julie xxxx
Thank you ☺️ xxx
Hey Rachel - I've enjoyed watching from the US. Glad to see you're moving forward with more posts in store for 2025. I know they take some production work, but I really liked your landscape en plein air videos from last year. Plus, you have very good filming technique. Keep up the good work. Big thumbs up!
Thank you for your feedback 😊 I enjoy making the outdoor landscape ones too although I might wait until it’s a little warmer in the spring before I do another. I don’t know where the time went this year but it’d be nice to do more of those in 2025! Thanks for watching ☺️
As a landscape artist I enjoyed watching you paint. I am lucky enough to get out on Dartmoor here in England
Thank you for watching :) Dartmoor must be lovely to paint!
Thank you so much for your paintings 💜I am self taught,I came cross you, YA was looking to get some extra info on painting without the really intense lines, that a lot of artists use, feels like your colouring at times, my brain Don’t like it and it tries to break Free 😂 and then I wreck the whole painting haha….. So Thank you heaps. That’s awesome. Love you Work 😊
Thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comment! I’m glad you like the paintings ☺️
This seal / sea lion is so cute omg
Thanks for watching! 🦭🦭

Thank you. I agree with each and every of your comments. Your painting is,lovely.
Thank you! I’m glad it was relatable :) thanks for watching ☺️
Beautiful little painting, thank you for sharing ❤
Thank you ☺️ and thanks for watching!
@@rachelinhester your welcome. 😀
such soft and lovely colors! thank u for sharing your art
Thank you ☺️
Beautiful but I think you used a little too much of paint
Love it! Would you share which brushes you used?
Sure :) they’re from Rosemary and Co brushes. I think the first one is a really old ivory flat brush (size 0) that’s a bit smaller now than when I first got it after all the usage! The others are Mini Spotter Red Dot brushes (again from Rosemary & Co) and their sizes are 1, 0, 1/0 and 2/0. They’re quite similarly sized so I probably didn’t need to use all of them but I ended up using them for different colours to save having to constantly wipe them clean while painting 😊
Inspired me to get out and paint so massive thanks 😊
That’s great to hear :) thanks for watching ☺️
Beautiful...
Thank you :)
Beautiful
Thank you ☺️
Awesome.❤
Thank you ☺️
Thank you for sharing ❤
You're voice is so soothing! And the painting is even more beautiful❤ You deserve a lot more attention!! ❤ New sub 😊
Thank you for such a lovely comment ☺️
Glad to see you again. I don’t do acrylics but do oil and watercolor. However you are right when you say it# always good to challenge yourself with something new!
Thanks for watching! Yes I’ve always preferred oils so it’ll be interesting to see how it goes. Watercolours and oils will very much be continuing alongside the acrylic though! :)
Love this ! ❤
Thank you ☺️
Great as always
Thank you! ☺️
Beautiful ❤
Thank you ☺️
Loved it 😁
Thank you! ☺️
Potraits are so meaningful. My husband does charcoal drawings and has made one for me. I’m very glad to have it because the portrait is of our pocket beagle, Scout Marie, who was almost 10 yrs old and passed away last fall. And I get to look at it as often as I want. She really was a part of our family. Our children are grown and out of the house and Scout was much loved. We speak of her all the time. The portraits you do serve a purpose. If you can make some money from them, good for you . I wish you success in your endeavor.
Thanks for your lovely comment. I’m glad you have such a wonderful reminder of Scout Marie. They’re such a huge part of the family. Thanks again for watching :)
He looks like he will fly straight off the canvas.💖 Absolutely beautiful 😍 This is going in my playlist of happiness 😊
Thank you for such a lovely comment!! 😊
Bellisimo
Thank you ☺️
That last highlight after a long and tedious painting is always so satisfying. Your painting is stunning 😍 ✨️ 💖
It’s such a satisfying part of the painting! Thank you! ☺️
Beautiful, I really enjoyed watching you as I to am building myself up to do some plain air but wouldn't been keen on being watched by passers by either, You have encouraged me to to find a quiet spot and have a go . Thank you .❤
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video ☺️ it was daunting doing a plein air painting for the first time but I’m glad I did it! I’m waiting for the spring to arrive so I can get back outside painting! :) Thanks for watching 😊
Beautifully done!
Thanks very much ☺️
Beautiful as usual....the Eyes..... magical...
Thanks very much ☺️
Looks amazing I prefer watercolour myself
Thank you ☺️ watercolour is lovely too! And much more portable!
I wish you the best in your artistic endeavours, with lots of painting enjoyment. I wish I could have more time to paint!
Thanks very much ☺️ finding the time can always be challenging! I hope you find lots of time to paint this year :)
Hi! I love your work! What has your training been? Did you go to a professional art school? Thank you!
Just heard you say you are a self-taught artist! You are just amazing! Thank you so much for posting your work! I will be following your channel!
Thanks for watching :) sorry I was a bit slow with the reply but I’m glad you found the answer anyway in the videos! I’ve never been to art school but I’ve learnt so far through TH-cam videos, books from favourite artists, researching things online and lots of practice! 😊
