Tench - A Long Awaited Spring
A slow start to the tench season reminds us that it is our impatience after a long winter that is more often the problem rather than any change in the weather or fish behaviour.

Anglers of a certain vintage will spot my homage to some of the inspirational writers and broadcasters of my youth. A time when fishing was all about the pleasure of taking part and not the kudos of becoming a legend in one's own little world. So I take my metaphorical hat off in the credits to Jack Hargreaves' Out of Town programme about rural life (just as it was dying out I suppose) with the...
You sir are a purist ....i think we are a dieing breed. No alarms...just knowledge, watercraft, and experience. Put it together and and to me thats a perfect day on the river. Appreciation of what nature has to offer ..even if you blank, theres always something to amaze and surprise. Incidentally what did that beautiful Barbel tip the scales at ?
@Tommy_Cockles 'Tommy Cockles'...love it! Thank you for your kind words, the answer to your question is 16lbs 10ozs.
Still my favourite fishing video, ever, and I’m strictly fly only for the last 2 decades. This actually makes me want to dust off my coarse tackle again. ❤️👏

A very warm welcome back chaps! Fabulous! Great to see you enjoying yourself again 👍
@@paulharris6886 Thanks for viewing, Paul. We have enjoyed ourselves occasionally in the intervening years, honest!
So refreshing to have real fishing content when compared to the chav carping and modern pike stuff. Real fishermen don't say pukka, bank life, social, innit, real anglers don't leave litter or act like louts. Real anglers respect nature and all fish!! Passion for angling is the best series ever made, but this is such a welcome relief from the other fishing content on TH-cam. Congrats sir on your work (all of them have been excellent)
@@meok292 couldn't agree more and, in respect of your last paragraph, that's very nice of you to say.

Good to see you back filming George, managed a Trent 2lb+ roach recently…they’re there👍
Ooh ya! I need to tap you up then, Dave! Thanks for dropping by.
Nice video George. I wish I’d kept the split cane rod and the Intrepid Black Prince reel I was given all those years ago! I remember cycling to Newbold quarry with my rod strapped to my bike and a basket tied to a rack on the back, just to catch some tench. Your videos certainly invoke some memories for sure. Keep them coming!
@@alanmiller259 Thank you, Dusty. Tbh, I never had a cane rod until just before starting to film this, but the rest sounds very familiar...to Vicarage Hill in my case and minus the tench. It seems our target of causing a warm glow may have worked then?!
@@artificialflight1942 The warm glow for sure, although it’s scary when you work out how many years ago it was! I spotted you were back at Vicarage Hill on one of your other videos. I also used to cycle to Frankton pools to fish for the crucians. I couldn’t imagine doing that now. It seems a long way in the car…

hi thanks for the reply, just sat here with my mate, watching a bit of fishing and making up some homemade ground bait, happy days, thank you,

well done sir, great fishing and filming, thank you,
Thank you for your kind words, Dave!
I’ve watched this a couple of times now and thoroughly enjoyed the quality and content. Your style gets me reminiscing about Jack Hargreaves, Terry Thomas and a Passion for Angling with Chris Yates and Bob James. I’ve recently simplified my own approach to fishing and gone back to the days when craft meant more than barrow loads of equipment. By the way, a big hello to George who I believe was a classmate at secondary school in Rugby.
Hi Alan (Dusty?), You could well be right! Thanks for the kind words. Yes indeed, 'ditched the back breaking quantity of kit on return to angling around 2012 and certainly wouldn't go back. Glad you enjoyed it. We're just working on the next for spring release.
Now that nickname brings back memories! Now only used by friends from way back when. I’ve had quite few years away from angling too, trying different hobbies, however, angling is a pastime that endures over my other fascinations. I look forward to the Spring video. In the meantime, I may bump into you along the canals and rivers between Rugby and Stratford sometime. Tight Lines! Now that’s an expression with some history…
Fabulous stuff takes me back to my youth captures angling in just the spirit it should be I grew up fishing the very same swims born in Leamington spa I fished a few of your matches in a former life now live on other side of the world still try and get out fishing most weeks all the best 👍👍👍
Great to hear from you, Carl! I'm sure your fishing must be very much different now then? So pleased you enjoyed the video.
@@artificialflight1942 the fish are bigger but no more pleasurable he he I still can't sleep the night before a trip not sure how the cold would affect my old bones nowadays 👍👍👍
@@carlward7372 yes, it's not ideal.
Hello George. I can’t find another way to contact you, but hope you might see this comment and, if still involved with TH-cam, honour me with a reply… I’ve loved watching your content from a few years ago and I’m simply wondering why it began and finished so swiftly? As a busy father, husband, bread winner, one-time author and relatively new content creator, I understand the barriers to ongoing creativity all too well, but I hope you’re in good health and may revisit your channel at some point in the future. Tight lines and all the best, John
Thanks for getting in touch, John. The reason simply is that, initially covid, and then personal circumstances got the better of Eric and I. We do however have a new film under prep, again taking longer than it should, largely due to my technical incompetence, but hopefully you'll find that one to your liking in due course. All the best with your own venture too! George.
Honestly the best news I've heard in some considerable time. Can't wait.
Fantastic video, presented without selling any fishing tackle, baits etc, and truly enjoyable, thanks so much, now subscribed
Thanks for your comment Jason, much appreciated. We certainly do try to show angling as it really is, rather than how tackle manufacturers want you to see it.
are the Roach eaten much, are they good eating? thanks for your reply
No, they can't be eaten. CRT state, "It's illegal to take fish away from the canal under both Environment Agency by-laws and the 1968 Theft Act". Thank you for your question.
What a lovely video. Full of nature but also showing exactly the techniques you have used with the sketches etc I especially enjoyed how you combined underwater canal footage which isn't something you see often. As I have taken up canal match fishing once again I found this particularly informative for thinking about how my perch/worm rigs are working and what the fish are actually doing down there. Thankyou
I must admit, Jonny, underwater filming has been such an eye-opener. It's nothing like we imagined it would be, in terms of fish behaviour. Thanks for watching.
Lovely film , actually led me to 'fishing' out my copy of Canal Fishing by Kenneth Seaman . The Roach chapter brought to life. Thank you.
Is that right, Dave? Great stuff. We must check that one out. Thank you.
Yours are some of the best fishing videos ive ever seen, anywhere. Such a soothing and comfortable tone, wonderful narration...just a perfect package. The muted colors of English winter appear identical to winter in Ohio, USA, where im watching from. Love them all, but this one especially above the rest for some reason. I know producing something like this is a lot of work, but boy, would I do a backflip if you made some more! Thanks.
Very generous of you, Jason! We're pleased to hear it's not only in the UK where there is an appeal.
Excellent film
Thanks matey, yours ain't too shabby either! Lovely roach you had.

Thank you Roger. V generous. We hope you enjoy the other films too.
Loved this video. Capturing the true essence of small stream chub fishing. With perspective to specimen weights. Good advice, important to success, to some basic , but often over looked in todays rig obsessed world of angling. Quality.
Thanks for your comments, Andrew. Intentionally basic as fishing need not be complicated, though many try to convince us it must be!
Great video this angler knows his stuff
Just snippets we've picked up along the way over the years, Lewis. We just hoped it might give one or two anglers the encouragement to have a go for these exceptional fish by leaving the 'pole & pinkies' at home occasionally. Thanks for your interest.

Unfortunately I've fractured my toe and instead of being at work (or casting a line) I'm stranded at home scouring TH-cam for fishing videos and was delighted to watch this! Have to say the zero advertising is wonderfully refreshing. I guess I will watch the rest of them this afternoon 👍
That's bad luck Steve, sorry to hear that, but at least you get to watch them! Thanks for the message.
Wonderful video George.. a great insight into the lift bite method, an often overlooked tactic used in recent years, but still highly effective for large canal roach beautifully portrayed in your excellent video. 👏 😊🎣
