Is it possible to get dents out of the tip of a metal mouthpiece? I dropped my jodyjazz super jet on the kitchen floor and now have two dents 🤦🏻♀️
Hello, sorry that happened to your mouthpiece. Yes, dents can be repaired most of the time. Often, however, a mouthpiece can get bent out of shape in a drop like that in ways that can't be seen with the bare eye so it needs to be measured to be able to give a full picture of the damage. You're welcome to send it to me for an assessment. You can schedule a time through the website and ask further questions through the site as well.

That was probably a D'Addario Select Jazz unfiled 3M. I don't remember for sure, but that was what I was playing at the time.

If you rub the mouthpiece you will smell the sulfur showing it is hard rubber. Also, there are no telltale signs of oxidation as you would likely see on an early hard rubber mouthpiece. The pitting is also a sign as you would not see this on a high end piece.
These are excellent mouthpieces. The air flow just feels right and it goes precisely where you want it to go. Lots of room to grow the sound and haven't found the ceiling yet. Thank you Stephan!
When you pay a lot of money for a mouthpiece, especially an Otto Link, you really shouldn’t be to do any of this shit !
Ideally not of course. However, these pieces are often inaccurately finished so many find it useful to have their mpc refaced for accuracy.
Nice video and Orca demo. Reg. noticing lig. differences between at home playing against wall , and on the live gig, on stage: Consider the effect different temperatures and humidities has upon the reed. Look at the ligature about last, where it belongs.
Yes, humidity and reed placement are definitely factors to take into account, especially when traveling. Altitude can have a big impact as well.
What ligature is he using? Which ones do you recommend?
That's a Selmer 404 ligature. Unfortunately, Selmer stopped making them so they're getting difficult to find. That's my personal preference as well.
Impressive work! But, I have to ask, do you use the hammer to open the tip or to correct a crooked tip without having to completely reshape the baffle?
I use it for both. In both cases, I finish refacing with sandpaper. The closer I get with the hammer, the less I have to sand off so it diminished material loss.
Looks and sounds great! What mic do you use, and are you using Logic?
I use both Logic and Garageband. Garageband if I just have to capture some sound quickly and don;t have to do too much with it after. The mic is a T47 from Mic Parts. See the next comment for the link. I love this mic.

This is really cool. Does the plating affect the way the mouthpiece plays/ sounds?
It is really subtle. When I can tell, silver seems slightly brighter than gold. There is both gold and silver either way I plate it. Because silver doesn't bond directly to the brass, the mouthpiece needs a thin layer of gold first. When I plate with gold, the layers are gold - silver (for strength) - gold. Silver-plated pieces get gold - silver.

Thanks for checking this video out! Yes, a lot has to do with the feel of the mouthpiece both as a player but certainly also as a listener. I think it has to do with how well the player can connect with the sound.

There's another way to do this. Guys like Frank Wells would tap the mouthpiece with the facing facing down (yes, I meant that repetitive word, lol). I have a friend who witnessed this being done. Do it right and it works marvelously. Have to have a flat surface that is strong, like a professional flat block.

You can find good playing pieces if you have an opportunity to try out a handful of them but mostly these pieces get better with refacing.
