I am reguarly asked some questions about my channel. These are my top 5: Are you doing a video on “X”? Are you doing memberships? Will you film modern rail? Do you give talks? What’s the deal with the drone?

Cardiff Railway The Coryton connection
มุมมอง 2K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Not everyone will agree with me, but I took a walk to look to see if a connection could be built from the old Cardiff Railway at Coryton to link to the Taff Vale lines near to them. I am not convinced.

I've been doing similar things for a bit. I have my doubts that ChatGPT has enough data to create tags that can leverage search terms properly. Just because the terms relate to the video does not mean they are optimal for what people are searching on. I'm trying to figure out how to get chatGPT to work with the terms as well as consider trending terms. Chatgpt has no access to trending, apparently. Another trick you can use is give it the same instructions and have it work off your outline which you can upload to chatgpt. It gives more word fodder and prevents you from having to type concepts twice. I'm still concerned that, even with that, chatgpt fails to "grasp" optimization and is merely reorganizing unoptimized garbage input as unoptimized garbage output. Thanks for the video.
There's an old tramway a couple of miles from there in Pen-Tranch woods, still in Pontypool. You can find some stones with bits of tram rail rail still attached but it's a beautiful woodland walk now.
@@High_Lord_Of_Terra Thank you I'll have a look at that, sounds interesting.
Watching this now brings tears to my eyes. How such charm, beauty and glorious engineering, nostalgic of course, has been replaced with a road and retail parks. Very sad how progress in development has destroyed the soul and beauty of an area. I remember as a child going on a trip to watch them blow up the remaining cooling chimneys at Nantgarw. At least you have done sterling work to capture and record these fading memories for us, thank you Bob.
@@midinotes Thank you. It has been an interesting journey in writing and making them. I am glad it has triggered some positive memories.
aaaah your nearly down at the old newport to blackwood branch line, joined at blackwood, to come across to that viaduct :)
Really interesting
Nice background music.
Well at least it wasn't demolished like the Crumlin
Thanks Bob! Imma definitely gonna give this a try. Thanks for sharing.
Superb historian and videos, thanks for sharing. I used to live in that terrace that overlooked the colliery at Senghenydd, it was a massive sawmill then and a massive site. That's gone now too. Oddly enough, I now overlook the Cambrian Colliery site which you also mentioned in the garden
Thank you. There are too many slabs in that garden, these things should never have happened.
I went to Pontypridd Technical College during the late 80s, and we were explicitly warned to steer clear of the tin works. As it also happens, I use to live in Tongwynlais as a child. Amazing videos - subbed.
Thank you. It was amazing that such a small bit of land stopped a whole railway. I have been warned about it too, yet I still see people wandering in.
Hi Bob i don't make videos but i find it very interesting what can be done. How's the drone project coming along thanks again Bob.
Thanks. Drone is coming along slowly, be looking at upgrading next year. It will add a different dimension to my videos. This is a one off to share some info with a few TH-camrs, back to railways and canals soon.
@@bobsrailrelics Look forward watching them Bob.
Well thanks for that Bob I don't have any use for Artificial Intelligence and don't know anything about ChatGPT. On the train to Pontypridd tomorrow (back on the bus because of the works) and please get back to the historical railway reports.
@@juliansadler6263 I have one on canals completed and ready to go, plus one on stations in Cardiff in edit. This was just a quick diversion - rail replacement video 🚌
Very interesting Bob, sometimes I might use AI to help with ideas on Thumbnail writing ot the title
@@Sim0nTrains I make use of it at times to summarise the video. There are bits that will watch your video and make a summary of it but I have yet to get one to work. BTW please share this amongst your YT community as it may help some of them as well.
Very interesting, Bob. I wasn't aware of this, but I don't do so many uploads these days and part of the fun is thinking up tags. Still, it's food for thought and might increase the hits on some of my older videos.
@@MervynPartin My mind goes blank when it comes to tags so I do enjoy this way of doing it.
Well explained, Bob 👍
@@fhwolthuis Thank you. A bit different this time.
absolutely beautiful piece of work, i live in six bells, my grand father, first took me underground, when i was 12 in 1984, to real mine, a live mine, not a museum like big pit. The speed of the bond, was terrifying, open sides, and a plunge into water at the bottom, where it had been raining. we stepped out at pit bottom. and the eerie feeling as the wind rushed through, as a banksman opened the door. there was a first aid office to the left all painted white, stark contrast, to the complete blackness and the concrete road, that lead in to the distance.... all ny uncles, grand fathers, father, all suffered dust on the lung, i was so glad when the shut the mine and i never had to start, when i was 16
I have only been down the one at Big Pit and that seemed fast. It must have been terrifying!
dont forget the Roman hot springs in taffs as well :) like the one in Bath
Thanks, there is an 'Off the Tracks' vidoe which covers them. It came about bracuse I used to say Taffs Wells a lot and, of course, there is only one well in Taffs Well.
the abandoned level, ties up with taffs well quarry. iron ore was mined from taffs, for shot, during in the naplionic wars. around the rim of taffs well quarry, are the original drillings from around 1790 onwards,
you gotta do the brynmawr to abergavenny mountain tunnels and cutting. if you fancy a stroll one day and a camera man, I'm game. only 1 mile away and 5000 subs across my channels, I'll share your vids :)
I'll add it to the list. I have a lot to film and finite time available 😃
@@bobsrailrelics I have the same problem, this channel on matchbox has really taken off, this last few months, but my other channel, is a long hard slog, with lots of outside filming, like yours.
@@marksmatchboxmemories-xd6qp Can you post your channel details, I'd like to have a look
yup, hang on, let me switch accounts.
@@bobsrailrelics i use to work in taffs well quarry, was an artic tipper driver in there. you wouldnt believe how hollow that mountain is, goes back to the naplionic wars.
your gonna have to do the most around the castle as well :) along with upper n lower dock street in Newport :)
I used to work on Lower Dock street. When I see photos of how it used to be it is unrecognisable
@@bobsrailrelics yup, you would never know, what was there.
onle local subscriber, joined :)
@@marksmatchboxmemories-xd6qp Thank you
wow, passed that a million times and never knew that was there!
great video young man, I can remember them, pulling it down
What a fascinating video, it's amazing how it all disappeared. Thanks for sharing
"Could it be done?" Simple question and the answer is always yes, but. There is always a balance between need and cost. If the need is great then money can generally be found, eventually. If the need is not great then there is no chance and that's about it really. So I guess the question here "is the need great or not?"
As a relative newcomer to Cardiff with an interest in local history, I recently found out about this line and spotted the old bridge sides on Penylan hill. This video is exactly what I was looking for, thank you for showing the old photos and walking the route.
Glad you enjoyed it. When I first came to Cardiff you could see some of the trackbed, but it's all gone now. Would have made a great cross city tram route
With any of these proposals it all depends on potential traffic. It's the same with connecting Aber to Carmarthen, is there enough traffic? I doubt it and the suggestion of an 80 minute journey really is pie in the sky.
Tottally agree, I can see the Velindre one being useful however
Great video. I have lived in Penarth for about 25 years and it's good to see a little bit of the history. I lived here for quite a while before I knew those buildings were the Old Dock railway.
Glad you enjoyed it, its always fascintaing looking at the old amongst the new
Hi Bob, that was a gem!! Well done, all the best!!
Thank you
awesome stuff bob what an interesting find btw the things you called piers are actually abutments, great find though
If all those old railway lines, the M4 and the interchange could be built in that area, then so could a connection from Coryton to Radyr. Where there's a will there's a way.
Ver probably, however when they built the M4 and A470 they didn;t care as much about nature etc as they do now. They just ploughed through.
thanks bob
An alternative route could be branching off cutting south of arched bridge, running along south of longwood road only cross over near its junction with industrial estate.
Potentially, though you still have the canal and another nature reserve. Be interesting to see if it ever happens
The amazing photograph and you standing their, i could sense time was reaching out to pat you on the shoulder. They built stuff to last, a legacy to the people of those times. I am looking forward to watching your videos.
Small, but perfectly formed Bob.
Right down my street! I used to walk the cycle track with my mum loads when I was a kid. You can spot old rail sleepers amongst the undergrowth on the sidings which was great fun for a train loving toddler :) (or used to be able to, almost definitely grown a lot in the past decade+)
Thanks for the update!
Nice update, great to see a photo of the bridge😀
There is one at LLanfoist near Abergavenny that still goes over the canal . That went from Blaenavon to Hereford . A distance of over 23 miles that was horse drawn tram way .
Fascinating video Bob I liked the photograph at 3:37 Showing the bridge and the Stop Signals one of which has been cleared, thank you for making it.
Nice update Bob, great to see the actual bridge thanks.
Just found these shorts. Absolutely brilliant
Thank you. I enjoyed making them, glad you are enjoying them.
On the South Wales valleys channel there is a 4 min video of a train going over the viaduct. I am not connected with that channel, just thought it might be interesting
@@nigelprice3929 Thanks, I check it out
Wasn't the new Cardiff metro going to re-add this line or did they can it?
As far as the Asda is still in the plans. I have another video further down the list that covers how this could work
I remember them building the NEW Hafodrynys colliery 😳 giving my age away😂
Another great video. A wonderful combination of local and social history.
@@MikeOSullivan-z4n Thanks Mike.
In Llwnypia there are terraces of house climbing the hill which were built for the miners. None of these houses had baths so at the top of the hill in a field opposite them are large concrete foundations with rusted pipes sticking out of them. This Was the bath-house for them.
I remember on Paul Merton's 'Who Do You Think You Are?' him finding out that his Great Grandad (I think) drowned in the canal in Cardiff.
@@ajivins1 I missed that, I will look it up. Thanks
@@bobsrailrelics Think it was around Cathays, maybe North Road.
@@ajivins1 That would be logical as it came down there into Cardiff. Ironically I am building a video at the moment on where it went through Cardiff and the difference between it and the Dock Feeder canal.
@@bobsrailrelics There was an interesting programme on the Iplayer a while back called 'Hidden Cardiff' in which a lot of forgotten about places were shown like the railway tunnel under Culverhouse Cross that went from the valleys to the docks and that lock gate at the weir in Llandaff fields. this was explored to under Queen Street.
Super Sausage Truckers overnight stop next to Semilong spencer Bridge Road. That was a Slipper bath. I remember it as a kid.
Thanks Bob. What about something on the street urinals around the south Wales valleys. I find them very Od!
@@LouisePowell-s8j There is one in St Fagans museum. Not sure I will be going down that route but great suggestion. They are a bit odd.
There is still one in use on Broadway, Pontypridd - red brick with a black brick edging
@@cardiffian558 There are a few in the Treforest area. Very well built. Thing is if you start hanging around them. Maybe taking pictures it could get a bit George Michael!
