The loudest show I've ever been to in my life. I was completely deaf afterwards and three days later because I refused the ear plugs they were handing out at the door. During one song one of the lights in the ceiling rattled free and feel down onto a girl.

are you serious... just because you don't like the word shoegaze, doesn't mean that it has no meaning. we need names so we can categorize types of sounds. i have many friends who were able to find sick new bands and music BECAUSE there are a label for different sounds. Hell, my 12 year old sister typed in prog rock on google and ended up listening to great gig in the sky for the first time and fell in love with pink floyd. Labels are necessary for music. If you disagree, you're fooling yourself.

Not really. MBV are just more dreamy in that shoegaze kind of way. Sonic Youth have some noisepunk songs, some alt-rock songs, some melodic indie songs. They've got a lot of totally different stuff to offer.

@pamaspamas To me, that's the beauty of bands like MBV and Sonic Youth - it's never really the same song twice. I've goofed around with open tunings but I'm afraid of snapping off the necks of my guitars. And those folks ridiculing you? They're probably still playing the same ld Yes, ELP, and Jethro Tull songs. :) Cheers, man!

the song is called "heart from us all" from their first US album. they also had a UK album before this one. the latest album came out last year called "fits"

@afterthetonemusic any drum sound that comes from 808 or 909 these days is sampled directly from the old machines, so its an exact representation of the old analog machines i have several 909 VST plug ins plus rebirth 338, they are the exact sounds from old rolands.

"808's and Heartbreaks" is an album title in reference to Kanye's past as is true of all of his album titles. Not to mention, Roland tends to call a lot of it's modern Drum Machines that are built into their new workstation keyboards 808's/909's still for retro effect. But the way in which the sound is produced and how it sounds is not even minutely similar to the old 80's sound. Synthetic music is making a comeback, yes. The original 80's take on synthetic music is not. Thank God.

My bad. Either way. The 80's drums had no actual drum origin and were completely synthetic. Which is what gave them that sound that is so distinct to 80's music (and movies). Synthetic drums are still used, but thankfully they have improved astronomically and that old 80's sound is dead and gone aside from when an artist is deliberately making reference (typically comical) to the era.

I mean bad as in not good. And what is used in hip-hop and electronica are new versions of the old concepts of 808's and 909's many of which are entirely digital or installed within a workstation keyboard. Rather than a whole separate unit as was custom in the 80's. New models use real drum sounds and synthesize them to emphasize certain EQ levels and such. While they are coded MIDI, the sound origin is no longer MIDI like in the old 808's. The sound is far removed from the original models.

I'm not a fan of the original so much haha. I like that it sounds more maddening than depressing. But 80's drums/bass sounded bad then, and they sound bad now.
