Roof Rack Renovation on the 71 Super Beetle (Part 2 - Wood Slats)
Let's measure, cut, drill, oil, and install some oak slats on the Beetle's roof rack. Pretty easy. Just takes time and patience.

      I get it, man. If you start at about 8:28 you see the spring in its natural state, the same shape you see it right out of the package. The loop is facing up and the short tail is facing down. Now push the pin through the first hole of the floor bracket, through the first hole in the pedal, THEN it needs to go through that loop in the spring. You may have to push the spring in just a bit to make it available to the pin. Once you have the pin through the loop, keep pushing to get it through the second hole in the pedal and the second hole in the floor bracket. Then you should be able to bend that long part of the spring up to fit behind the tab in the pedal. You've got this!!

      Replacing all of those parts did help tighten things up a bit. I also ended up bending that piece I mention at 1:20 to the right JUST a tiny bit to make sure it rides the black wheel properly. Haven't had any issues since making this video. Everything is nice and smooth.

      @@Air-CooledAdventures good. I have a chip in my roller and a bolt where the pin should be in the pedal. I ordered some parts to do this. The pedal feels fine though. I notice you cut the vid with the spring. Is the pin hard to get in?

      @Air-CooledAdventures 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah man. I cut the video so I could stop and figure out how the spring is supposed to fit. lol It's not super intuitive unfortunately. Once I started recording again though I did go back and show exactly how it fits. Check at about 8:20. I take it back off the tab and show how it lays in its natural shape, then I pull it back up where it fits into the tab.

      Still waiting on my pin roller and spring. Some dimwit has a undersized bolt in mine. It looks like the pin is loose fitting in yours? What you have there is a quick shifter. It’s not necessary but it makes the shifts shorter. You have to have the shifter plate plate first so you still have reverse lock out until pressing down. Then you have the quick shifter plate sit on top then. Your shifter. Hopefully this helps you out and anyone els.

    Hi, I watched your video and can perhaps offer some useful advice. I'm 61 and have had over a dozen various air cooled VWs over the years when I lived in South Florida. So I know all about vapor lock and how to resolve it. It looks like you've taken measures to resolve your overheating issues, though you don't mention anything about about having checked the operation of the bellows (thermostat). If stuck closed, a common problem, it will cause over heating. Now as far as vapor lock is concerned, you're on the right track. The ethanol in today's gas is more prone to evaporation at lower temps than the pure petroleum fuels that were used 30 years ago and what VWs were designed to be run on. From what I can see, you definitely need to reroute your fuel line. It should come through the firewall diectly to the fuel pump and away from any hot tin or exhaust manifold. Next, get rid of that fuel filter in the engine compartment. If you want an inline fuel filter put it under the car somewhere, before the firewall or up front near the tank, tied up, and away from any heat source. Electric fuel pumps are the way to go provided you have a good regulator. I would place the pump up as close to the tank as possible and mount the regulator on the firewall away from any heat source.

    • @Air-CooledAdventures
      @Air-CooledAdventures 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much for taking the time to write out this advice for me! That's awesome. So the Carter pump I bought comes with a filter already mounted on an inch of line. I will plan to mount that as close to the tank as I can. Also rerouting fuel lines and I bought some fuel line insulation that I don't think I mentioned. As far as the thermostat, I'll have to dig deeper into that. I thought that was part of the equipment that allowed engine-heated air to pass under the car and into the cab, but I may be way off base. Thank you again and I'll add that to my research.

    How is your bug shifting? I was watching your video and it looks like the plate under your shifter is on backwards ... The plate has a long ramp on one side and a short one on the other side... The long ramp goes on the passenger side of the car.. You also had another plate that comes with other performance shifters that isn't supposed to be there... It will cause you all sorts of problems with reverse... There is a guy on TH-cam called Slades vw... check out his video on this same topic and compare his to your installation..
