PT Cruiser Race Car Goes for a Cruise
มุมมอง 1.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Little update on the project. Coming out of winter and getting ready for new mods this year. TURBO!
I like your channel. Been a minute since I've seen anything with the PT. I've owned two PT's of the 2nd gen flavor. I have gotten to know some of the quirks of these cars. Sold my first hard top one which was a manual :.( But my daily driver now is my convertible 06 GT PT. Would probably be easy to get the stage 1 for the turbo and a little more power. My only concern with using the 400 grit is if not all that sand comes out of the cylinders when cleaning after. I am not as concerned with the dingleball honing though, just excited to see this baby run again. Maybe if I can get another PT with a manual transmission again I can start doing some performance stuff beyond just the basics. I am not sure I want to do much with the convertible since it is an automatic. The best PT's to find are the manual GT convertibles imo. Of those, the 05's might be the rarest. But I typically prefer the 2nd gen body. I know, even with the TIPM. But I have figured out how to fix some of the issues with those, unless it just needs a refurbished one. TIPM Rebuilders looks to make really nice refurbished ones though with possibly better electronic components.
if you're building a high performance engine let a pro engine machinist do the block dingleball hones is far from good
Wish I could find one that would do the work. Like I stated in the video I’ve been looking for 3 years. Not looking to ship out to one so now I’m doing it.
dork
paddle hones produces a flatter and hence better sealing surface compared to dingle berry hones
I have heard this, might have to try this with my spare block.
Lets GOOO The GOAT HAS RETURNED!
Nice ride my friend
Thanks man. Just got around to building the new engine. Factory turbo for now but shooting for 900hp in the end
What's up man, I have a neon srt4 engine on the stand that I'd like to build. I mechanic around but have never rebuilt an engine. I like your style. Would you be willing to advise/help me with my build?
I'd be willing to compensate you for your time.
Hey man, I actually started getting around to building mine. Been building for everyone but mine lol. Have the series coming out soon of the build
Hi, tell me how to install a 3-port Mac solenoid on srt 4, I am interested in electrical connection?
What hub should I get I have a 2004 pt cruiser
nothing like 2 tacs on the dash
So you're saying Modern performance intercoolers don't direct fit the PT CRUISER TURBO as a direct bolt on?... Fuck dat I'm not buying it then..I'm not destroying the front of my car for a part that doesn't fit.. who tf does that?.🤨 Thanks for the warning..bc I was about to buy that oversized refrigerator for mine... Bullet dodged..thanks for your sacrifice.
It may very well fit, but my PT is the N/A version. I added the turbo hance adding the intercooler.
Also, all the oil pressure sensors leak on ever model and year on the crusier. Theres a simple solution. Take the sensor out. And theres a white piece you need to take out with pliers and replace it with a coffee straw, im not bullshitting you, this allows it to breathe and you will get a oil pressure sensor leak again or the light going on.
I run my own oil pressure sensor now but I don’t think my OEM one ever leaked on me.
@@thatptracecar2148 nice yeah smart move. It would of eventually leaked. It happens. There's a fault in the sensors they made. I'm glad it's still working out for you brother.
Way too many electronic components nexts to the engine. Watch whats going to happen. I replaced 3 "factory" computers because of the turbo being so hot in the engine bay. Stupid ass engineers putting a computer in the engine bay. Its well know for these cars to burnout the computer. You have too many components in that engine bay. I give it a year before all that has to be replaced. After replacing my crap, i decided to put all my computer stuff behind the firewall. Saves alot of aggravation later on. I give you alot of credit for what you did. Trust me. And another thing. Please vent the hood. You need air going into the engine bay. Its a turbo so its a must
The factory ECU I only use for the can bus system door locks, windows and lights. My engine ECU is inside on the passenger side floor. But for the heat I do know what your mean my Malibu has that issue just had to replace the fuse box on her for micro fracture in the box wiring. The quad spark I believe is meant to be close to the coil pack. All in all I hardly drive the car 0 miles this year as I’m still waiting on parts, 0 miles last year and year before that maybe 1,000. I only have 3,000 total on my new block.
@@thatptracecar2148 ok then you're good but if you DID drive it regularly you would know what I mean. And I'm not saying anything that the manufacturer themselves didn't say. That car will kill any components in the engine bay. If you're not driving it then obviously there's no heat. And the car is gonna have more problems if you don't drive it regularly
Theres alot more things that a different on a PT GT from the factory and putting a turbo in an NA pt cruiser. Like 11 different things. You cant just put a turbo in a regular car. you have to change the rods, the pistons, etc. I can name them all but why bother. And the factory Mitsubishi turbo that comes with the PT GT is tuned at 14lbs of boost for the turbo. And thats factory.
I think I went over some of the changes I made to save the engine from the install of a turbo on a non turbo car in my other videos. Here I have the upgraded oil pump, pulled timing, yes compression is at 10:1 stock is 10.5:1 but with the cabers open up in the head the compression drops. I was tuned for 8psi yes it could boost spike to 10 but boost cut takes over. Engine tear down video shows no damage cause by having the turbo installed. With proper measures taken I see no reasons the motor couldn't a few pounds of boost.
Make sure to push both buh-ins. 😎
Just bought my first pt excited for mods
I have some pt cruiser questions is there a chance I can get hold of you
Do you have a built head or do these cams work with the stock springs alright?
Absolutely, you need upgraded springs.
@@thatptracecar2148 Thanks, I have stage 3 crowers and an 05 GT convertible 5 speed. I also have an 06 GT donor, guess I'll get that head built... right now I'm struggling to figure out what happened to my car's spark, died in the driveway. Always something. Thanks for the reply, I figured I needed more spring, but was curious is you were running these on a stock head / valve set up.
Bring the piping higher past the tire.. My built pt motor has wiseco pistons. Eagle rods. Full summit racing things. Darrel cox timing kits kevlar timing belt. Built performance 41te transmission. Billet torque converter 3" exhaust headers. Solid motor mounts. 245 wide 18 " tires. Traction concepts LSD.. empire oil adapter and 6 pass external oil cooler. Runs off 3 car batteries too. Where'd you get your transmission built?
Are you running boost?
No boost in this video.
Would you share your crank settings in efi analytics software and info on the opti spark ?
Do you need the cranking settings for startup or the crank sensor info? I’m not sure what opti spark is, I run a driver aka quad spark with injectors in sequential mode.
@@thatptracecar2148 my bad !! quad spark box .yes the crank settings in software besides neon 32-2 also like going high / inverted etc etc thank you for sharing your journey on you tube .
@@brettclifton I take no responsibilities for this info I provide, please do research on the settings I provide as they might be custom to my car. My latest tune file I have (36-2+2) for my spark mode I run this for some reason just use the neon one though unless you know why you need to run something else, ignition input capture is (rising edge), spark output is (going high), Number of coils is (wasted spark), spark hardware in use (ms3x spark), Cam input (ms3x Cam in), flip polarity on hi-res tech/cam is (normal), Cranking dwell is (6.0m/s), cranking advanced (10 degrees), dwell type is standard (dwell), nominal Dwell (3.5) I recommend starting at 4 and doing a ton of research on this and this is depended on your coil pack. Spark duration is (0.7). Go to cranking and startup settings and make your cranking rpm to 200 and thank me later. My main fuel output is MS3x fuel, running semi-sequential, angle is (end of squirt). DIY autotune has a great right up for our cars all the basic settings you need and one by one do more research on each setting to fine tune.
Water was probably getting into the top end of your engine on the cam lobes from not using any ultra black gasket maker rtv along with your intake valve cover gasket. I find it funny though you have a turbo with the N/A valve cover, not that it matters. Also, did you upgrade your pistons or connecting rods? I am guessing you have the titanium valve springs. Also, what stage is this head again on the porting? I am guessing you also have larger intake and exhaust valves from what I remember on your other channel. Edit: I guess it was your old engine that I was wondering about on the pistons and connecting rods.
I taped into the wrong coolant port so what I think was happing the turbo was getting positive coolant feed from both the intake of the out take for the coolant and believed it was boiling the coolant and evaporating. honesty I like the red as it comes off better on tear down. This was stock bottom end, the head is fully built. I have titanium valves, retainers and I forget what springs. N ot sure on the stage it is ported though and the valves are oversized, 2mm on exhaust and 1mm on intake.
Surprised you aren't just trying to get one of the turbo manual transmission's from a donor PT.
I always wanted a manual valve body trans and this is really my only race car. I do have a another project being introduce to the channel soon. Save it from the junk yard
Put some oil on that jacks screw bolt, then use an impact. Might go faster! 😅 Also, glad to see you're still working on the PT. Was watching your other channel. Now I found this channel too!
I wanna do something like this except on a Convertible model and make is as quiet as possible.
What turbo do you have
Just the factory one. Probably gonna run that for this year as well. Parts have been really hard to come by and I just want it running again.
You think buying one is worth it
@@thatptracecar2148get a ball bearing twinscroll turbo with the twinscroll exhaust turbo manifold

The only issue I had with wiring is I lost a ground going to my blinker. Now there is almost no factory wire left so I can’t speak for it now
@@gabrielhighes3359 ahhhh shit sucks cause the interior is so much better on the 06+

I have an 05 GT convertible and an 06 GT... the 06 is a nightmare compared to the 05.
Any updates on your PT ? Just curious. I loved how you made one of the most powerful N/A PT's out there.
Hey, still working on it. Parts have been really had to get. Waited about a year for the connecting rods. Now I’m waiting on the bed plate to me machined flats.
How dose it drive on the street?
Terrible with those cams. These are racing cams and you will lose all power below 4k rpm. The brain crower stage 3 are a nice split between street and track and I think they advertise that as well.
Reminds me of a rats nest
Haha the factory wiring is because it’s hacked just to keep some stuff still working till I fully convert.
You know any websites with decent looking widebody kits or am I gonna have to build it myself
Never seen one. Probably have to build it
Kbd body kits
Love the videos but man you would of saved alot of time and money starting off with a GT. That's what I did. I didn't realize you didn't have one until I saw where the power steering container was located. Ugh
Some of the GT's are becoming collectible. Especially the 2005 and 2008 convertible with manual, those are rare.
When I was a kid I said what ever my first car was will be my racecar. That's why I never swapped out to a GT
@@thatptracecar2148 I understand where you are coming from but you're adding a turbo and an intercooler. So I understand a PT Cruiser isn't a sports car but you are turning it into one so...
How come no burnout?
It's funny you think it's a stick...lmao
Are you driving an automatic like a stick shift? I have a 2001 PT cruiser Limited addition I wonder if I can put a turbo in that?
It is an automatic but its a manual valve body so you have to shift it as it won't shift itself. I wouldn't recommend turboing it as there is a lot more to do than you think. I think I covered just about everything need to do it on my channel and this requires swapping the tranny to what I have or a manual.
I have a 2005 PT Cruiser Convertible... How do put the top down
Open the handle by the rear view mirror. Then press the open / close "soft top" button below your radio.
I have an 05 pt convertible top it's a 5 speed too.hydralic clutch
@@gradyhernandez4699 Is it the GT model or does it have a turbo?
Is there a book or guide out there that covers all these modifications and upgrades? I have been meaning to rebuild mine as I have 2 AWD transmissions and have found the content of rebuilding the a604 a bit lacking. despite how common this transmission was over the years and the number of vehicles that it's been used in and as far as I can recall I think it's still using at least one Chrysler products still to this day. I was just going to drop over to the Oregon performance transmission shop and just see what they recommend for the rebuild and I was also thinking about just picking up a brand new rebuilt transmission from a transmission house. I got the money. I just wanted to try my hand in rebuilding it for the challenge of doing so. Not to mention the cheer joy of building something that works like Swiss watch. If you ever get around to going over some of the hop up parts and upgrades that would really cool. I'll throw you some coin if you can. THanks!
Over the years I have showed some things about the tranny, This video covers the clutch setup but I run a manual valve body shift kit and some of my own mods. You can find a lot by googleing a413 backyard mods or valve body mods or racing.
10:48 Whats that tool? Where do I get one? 22:13 Use a hard drive magnet from a dead drive. 34:50 The word i think is Deformity FANTASTIC VIDEO! Perfect syncing of the audio and video. Lighting could be better in small parts but overall? I am quite impressed.

@@Andrew_Stoffel Planned on keeping the stock crank, so still a 2.4. Covid really messed the project up. A lot of company's and parts dried up, obtaining existing parts are still very difficult. Are you using the stock coil pack for the ignition? I didn't think it was possible to use it with a mega squirt/ speeduino ecu
Yes sir. You need a driver for it to work. Basically it takes the low outputs from the ecu and converts them into high outputs to the coil pack.
@@thatptracecar2148 that's what I thought, what driver did you use? I'm doing basically the same as you but with speeduino instead, I also don't have the luxury of nipping to a breakers yard for bits as we never got a turbo petrol model here in the uk, I've got most of the bits together now to actually do the install and the ignition was 1 of the last few things to solve as the coil on plugs from the caliber don't fit out valve covers and I didn't really want to use ls style coils as space is limited in the engine bay
@@billysworkshop. I’m using quad spark
@@thatptracecar2148 thanks for that I'll look into it, although I literally just discovered an adaptor plate for the coil on plugs from the dodge caliber to fit our engine so may go down that wrote for sequential spark instead of the stock wasted spark setup, thanks again for the reply and good luck with the build looking forward for an update video
@@billysworkshop. Hey I just wanted to let you know I’m running semi sequential spark with my stock coil pack. Because your have full control over your a and b coils which are cylinders 1 , 4 and 2 , 3 so in the tune you can just fire your a coil than b coil when needed no wasted. The only benefit of going full sequential is fine tuning each cylinder honestly a waste of time trying to tune. Also another thing to point out is if you want any sort of sequential fire you need to use your cam sensor. But for wasted spark your can just use your crank sensor. Just some insight on what I learned about my car. Thanks appreciate the support sadly I’m still waiting on parts. In the upcoming year I will begin to start making my own billet parts to drive down cost, wait time and make parts that don’t exist.
Automatic 🤦♂️
I know this is an old video and I’m sure your knowledge base has increased. But the exhaust manifold and turbo is identical between the Turbo Cruisers and the SRT4.
Thank you, I ended up finding that out and kinda knew that at the same time. The reason I thought it was different was the tight fit to the brake line and found that the GT model has them routed different. BTW I'm a touring model.
@@thatptracecar2148 I gathered you were non Turbo, since you were adding a turbo and modifying the engine. The PT Cruiser Lites and GT’s had the forged piston, forged rod block shared with the SRT4. I hat block can hold 450 without upgrades, more if kept safe. Better starting point but the mods are fun. You will like it at around 400, that’s where mine is on E85 and a BWS turbo. I have 3 GT’s all together. Good luck on your build, if you ever have any questions feel free to reach out.
Looking good man! Wish me luck, installing my clutch / flywheel in my GT this weekend. Love watching your progress, keep it up!
Did you find wiring for tach hook up on 2005 pt
I just looked for you. Power is the middle wire the one facing the radiator should be spark A and the one facing the fire wall should be spark B. You will want to connect to spark A. Be sure to check and make sure your tech supports 4 cylinders. Best of luck

Thanks man. Yeah I had to do it was maxing my old system out. Hopefully it problem free
Was it easy to install the nrg steering wheel on the PT??
It wasn’t bad. I just followed the steps for the srt4 and it worked out. Just note you will loose your clock spring so you have to manually turn your blinkers off.
