This broad oblique nib is not suitable for legibility if the letters in the handwriting are small.

I just have to say your handwriting is beautiful! And I have just scrolled down further and I'm not the only admirer...

I see you put effort in this vid and opening kudos. However regarding pens you cannot say “what if you have to choose between one of them for the sake of owning only one.” Min 3:12. You always choose between two or more. It’s nice that you have beautiful pens. It is my humble opinion that you’d benefit from making these vids in your native language. And your viewers would benefit too.

Do you know since when a nib changed from #8 to #9 ?

You say the nib and writing is better in the KOP over the 149, but you rate the 149 better overall because it holds more ink?! Personally, how a pen writes is 95% of the reason why a pen is more desirable over others. Refilling ink is part of the fun ritual of owning fountain pens. Tolerating a stiff nib that causes forearm pain is not part of that fun.

Good review, although limited by low sample size. Ideally this should be done with several nibs of each make to account for variability, quite large in low-priced nibs. In general, the conclusion seems correct: Jowo nibs tend to be better than both counterparts. A couple notes here: 1) Scratchyness and feedback are physically different degrees of the same thing. Feedback is a small scratchiness, inevitable and tolerable when small. Interestingly, the scores of 'scratchyness' and feedback at the end turn out to be the same. 2) Wetness and flexibility tend to partially compensate for lack of smoothness and disguise it. For instance, the Bock nib was a little less smooth than Jowo, but considering it is much wetter, it means that its difference in (lack of) smoothness is larger than perceived. 3) An important feature in nibs is sensitivity to small angles of rotation. A poorly tuned nib may appear quite smooth at a very restricted angle - its 'sweet spot'. It becomes scratchy as soon as you deviate from it. This is often perceived as scratchiness or excessive feedback. Admittedly, it is hard to measure, but when that nib is correctly polished, it immediately appears smoother. And.. 4) Lastly, any nib can be made excellent and better than any otber brand if tuned and ground correctly. Given tbe high variability, this would overcome any difference in 'out of tbe box' quality grading.

Damn its been 2 years since i saw this post, are you doing well doc?

My reply is 4 years after this video was made and after the pandemic. Since at around the start of the pandemic, Pelikan gave excuses as to why they had to do away with the ink windows as well as the nice barrel finishes which allowed seeing the ink levels through some of the barrel designs in there higher end pens. So what is left now is still an expensive pen with no way of telling ink levels and still gross inconsistencies with nib widths as well as Pelikan quit offering a larger line of nib options. What did we get for all that? Prices increased! For the life of me, I can't imagine why I would buy a single pen from Pelikan for one of those (now) mediocre, over priced ink holders. Montblanc continues to shine with with still more nib choices, more ink storage and more consistency in nib widths. I won't even mention Sailor when they continue to only offer a nearly Microscopic converter even for their King of Pen. King? Really? 🙄.... Not even close (imho). I'm sticking with the consistencies, reliability and quality of Montblanc. A very fine comparison video!. Thank you!

Nice video! Someone took it apart and didn't assemble back carefully. The clip can be easily rotated to align withthe logo and the nib.

How to clean the ink barrel... it changes to pale yellow color...

What size is the nib? Medium or fine?

The 146s I have had and used are actually junk: the writing experience, build quality, and materials use are all significantly well below that of the m800 and 823. However, the m800 and 823 are pens that remain ink near all the time. I actually sold all except one vintage 146 and 149 because I never used them. The vintage 146 and 249 were slightly higher quality than the new stuff.
