SKLAR Super Something Build - Part 3!
This is the final installment of my Sklar Super Something Build! It took me about nine months to accumulate the parts and the knowledge around how to put it all together, but I think it (the bike) turned out really well and I’m so happy with the outcome! I’m looking forward to many miles on this bike! Thank you for watching!

SKLAR Super Something Build - Part 2!
มุมมอง 85111 หลายเดือนก่อน
Some progress to report on my bike build! Really this is just an update on the parts I have so far and then a little preview on my plan to build this myself. Apologies for the length, but I’m excited that I’m getting closer to having a dream gravel bike!
SKLAR Super Something New Frame Arrival and First Impressions!
มุมมอง 1.2Kปีที่แล้ว
This is my first new bike in more than 10 years! I’m really excited to put together a gravel bike hopefully with all of the bells and whistles that I’ve sort of ignored over the past decade: disc brakes! Indexed shifting?! A 1x mullet?! Really big low pressure tires! I promised to spread the financial pain of this build out over time, so unfortunately the follow up to this video is probably a w...
Metolius Fly Fishing - September 2023
มุมมอง 137ปีที่แล้ว
My buddy Bob and I were tossing dries at trout that were sipping mayflies in a skinny foam line this past weekend. I was fortunate that he had his phone out AND I remembered to start my GoPro when this all played out! The fly was a special old pattern we used to call “The Magic Fly” in 14. Rod is the Wojnicki 8 1/2 foot 5 strip 5 weight paired with a new Hardy Perfect reel.
Fishing Dry Flies on the Deschutes June, 2022

Quick compilation of fish. Clouds and some sprinkles rolled in and the BWOs started to pop. Had excellent dry fly fishing for about 45 minutes! Loads of fun on my five-sided Wojnicki 8 1/2 foot 5 weight.
Fly Fishing on Hood Canal

This was my best catch on a recent outing on the Puget Sound. I had been targeting and catching sea run cutthroat in the mornings before heading back to the house we were staying at and logging on to work. Most were in the 8-12 inch range and I’d even caught a small jack salmon of about a foot in length just prior to this fish. I was completely unprepared to hook a resident coho and it took me ...
Snow Peak Takibi Fire & Grill Unboxing
มุมมอง 1K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Unboxing the the Snow Peak Takibi Fire & Grill. Not really a review, just thought you might like to see what comes with the set, how it packs up and gets put together. When I was trying to decide about this, there seemed to be a finite number of videos about this grill kit, so just giving folks one more to watch! I will say that it's incredibly well made and beautifully designed. It packs flat ...

Catching a little rainbow on the Deschutes 12/26/15. Proof of concept video - this camera will be really fun this season!
moe breaks in
มุมมอง 1.3K12 ปีที่แล้ว
Moe used to break into our refrigerator. He even managed to pop child locks off of it. Rather than address the issue, we got a new fridge with a freezer drawer reasoning that it would be too hard for him to pull open, and even if he did get in, everything in there was frozen solid so he wouldn't want it. Then one day I came home and found frozen peas everywhere. So before we banned him from the...
Looks great, except the seat post clamp. 😊 I believe a silver one would be perfect.
ha! Didn't even thing about it (came with the frame)!
Beautiful bike with modern touches with tubeless tires and a waxed chain. 🚴✨✨
Thanks so much!
very cool. im enjoying my sklar super something for my daily commute to the office.
@@jdfromdc Awesome! I’m curious to know - did you add front and/or rear racks or fenders to your Sklar for the commute? I rode mine to work for about a week but I needed to use a backpack for half of my stuff which I don’t really enjoy so have mostly stuck to my Riv for that. Once it starts raining here there’s a good chance I will add some fenders to the Sklar but I’m loving how sporty it looks now without them!
@@bnoguchi1 I added an Ortlieb rear Quick Rack with a “permanently” zip tied milk crate. The rear rack (with milk crate attached) comes off in 15 seconds and goes on just as quick. When I’m biking around with my sons I remove the rack. When I’m going to work I attach the rack and throw my backpack in the milk crate. Im sure there are plenty of other solutions, but I’m happy with it.
hows the super something ? enjoying it?
Yes, thank you for asking! I only have about 400 miles on it at this point (and maybe 20 of those were off pavement) but it's light (to me anyway), responsive and very at home on dirt roads when I am on them - even though I'm not running knobby tires, it still feels very sure-footed. Very fun bike!
Very tasteful build. These white industries elements look just awesome, especially with flared spacers under the stem . I am building my bike out of very similar components on Brother Cycles Mehteh frameset. Are these hunt gravel race wheels btw? I just ordered them too!
Ah, should have read the description. Cheers from Poland.
Thanks for your comment! I just looked up Brother Cycles (I don't think they're too common in the States) - that Mehteh frame looks awesome! I ended up getting the dynamo adventure wheels, which have been great, but I bet you'll be stoked with the race wheels which look to be almost 500g lighter than mine! I've been very impressed with Hunt, I doubt there's a better value out there. Good luck on your build!
Great stuff B! The thing looks super sweet and that spec list is top-level!
Thanks, Tim!!
Great work - I have been on a similar journey - one thing I learned is to go back after a few hundred miles and torque everything down again (with a torque wrench) a surprising mount of things come loose when everything is new.
Good callout! Every time I ride it, I'm still listening for suspicious creaks and rattles - so far so good (knock on wood)!
Cool! I want to build up my own and I’m not a pro. This will be a great start!!
Can you describe the ride quality? How does it compare to the Riv?
Hi, I've been surprised at how different the two bikes are! The Sklar is quite lively - lots of feedback and flex when you dial it up climbing or on the flats. I think the tubeset must be quite a bit lighter than on the Riv. It reminds me a lot of a Bianchi criterium bike I had in the early 80s - feels very springy in all the right places but it's not anywhere near as twitchy and squirrelly as that bike was. In fairness, my Riv is almost always laden with bags and all my stuff for work so I feel like it dampens more than it gets to respond, if that makes sense? And I don't really feel like the Sklar would respond to a heavier load as well as the Riv does - so they each have a place in my riding life, for sure. So for all of the talk of "familiarity" when people talk about the Sklar, I've found it to be significantly and refreshingly different from what I'm used to.
Nice build; if I ever decide to splurge on a nice frame, Sklar is definitely on the list, so it was neat to see all the details. Don't beat yourself up over the bar tape lol; I've taped dozens of bars, and I still feel like I never do it quite the same way each time. You can almost always re-do it, even if there's adhesive involved. Happy riding!
Thanks! Yeah, I'll just wait to see how long the tape lasts!
What a series. Truly a bike fit for the trilogy treatment. You're definitely going to get a lot of looks from the local riders. This build is a looker!
This was so very helpful. I recently bought a supersomething that I am planning to build over next few weeks . Similar journey like yours from Rivendell to first disc brakes and thru axles .
You're going to love it! I forgot to mention this anywhere in the video, (I've only put about 40 miles on it so far) but it's been a really plush ride and it accelerates and climbs really nicely! Thanks for your comment!
@@bnoguchi1 glad to hear that you are enjoying ! I can’t wait to build my own . I think I am couple of days away from procuring the components . Any tips on sizing chains? And the is adapter is so confusing !!
@@deepakatreya4829 Oh man, I wish I even knew what I was doing right or wrong on that chain! I’m pretty sure (if you’re doing the Microshift Sword system) that the Microshift video directions on sizing and installing the chain will work fine for any normal human being who can pay attention and follow directions. At a minimum, if you mess it up, it seems like the most likely error would leave you long, not short. Long you can correct - just make sure you’re using a reusable quick link and then just subtract one link at a time and test extensively each time until it works. That way you’re never in a situation where you have to add back length, which basically you can’t reliably do safely. I was not methodical about this and my first attempt left me long, but I thought it was REALLY long and I randomly removed like 3 additional links which left me too short to be able to shift into the 48, and it just became a nightmare evening that left me second guessing how I mounted the derailleur, wondering if my cranks were compatible and all sorts of other dark thoughts!
@@bnoguchi1 thanks so much for the detailed response . Very helpful.
@@bnoguchi1 hello again ! Quick question .I presume you ran 180 mm rotors both back and front . What adaptors did you use ? Would you mind sharing links ?
Where can buy from asia,Philippines?
Hi, sorry I just saw this! Not sure about the Philippines - you might check with Sklar directly. The only Asian dealer I know of is Circles in Japan...
Great stuff Bryan! Looking good. Solid build and slick rig overall!
Hello. How tall are you? I’m considering this Frame, curious about sizing.
I'm about 5'6", but my legs are on the short side (inseam under 30") My seat height on other bikes (top of saddle to center of crank) is typically around 630mm. I found Adam at Sklar to be very responsive to email and he was super helpful in getting the size dialed in for me, so you might just reach out to him.
Awesome project, looking forward to the progress. I recently bought a Sam Hillborne used, i was trying to date it and i think it may be the same era as yours, with the caliper brakes. Any info on those fenders, are they custom painted too match? Thanks
Thanks for your comment! It was actually 2013 that I got the Hillborne and I got the fenders from Rivendell at the same time. On their site I think they were the SKS longboards and my recollection is that SKS did the cream color specifically for Rivendell but I feel like it might have been possible to get them in that color from other places as well. I hope you enjoy your Sam - I have absolutely loved mine and I really do ride it just about every day!
That’s a beautiful frame , the cranks will be awesome
Thanks for the comment! Very excited about the crankset!
Interesting - Looks a bit like a rugged Schwinn cruiser. I've heard complaints about internal cable routing. I've not heard of cables being damaged. Maybe internal is needed for bikes with hydraulic hoses. Nice color. I think you can build the whole thing yourself.
Yessir
Have you read any books by Roderick Haig-Brown? He was an ardent fly fisherman who wrote quite a few books on the subject. In one of them he talked about catching unexpected fish. Your Coho is a great example!
It's funny I know Haig-Brown (I think I might even own a copy of Bright Waters Bright Fish) but I don't think I've ever read one of his books! Gotta dig that one back up! Thanks for the comment!
What size do you use?
it's the large size.
Please Turn Up your Volume,,,!!!!
Great video. I know it's designed in Japan. Is it manufactured in Japan?
Thanks! Yes it is. It's been quite sturdy and fun to cook on!
I still can't believe Moe died! He was so cute! A cute little doggy. I miss seeing him :*(
