Violin service and recommissioning. A few video scraps from the workshop
มุมมอง 2242 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a violin that came in for a service, new bridge, strings ect, it turned into more and will come back in the new year for some crack repairs and other things. Unfortunately it was a rather rushed finish with the customer picking it up moments after the final stringing up and playing so I was unable to video the end result. When it comes back I will hopefully get the next repairs on video...

Thanks , needed to see that , great work , me , my problem is I am not sure my violin needs a patch but I am thinking about it now . Its hard to tell the damage on the spruce side is minimal but visual sinks in about half mm ? sound post markings , not sure ... my back place has a mark or two but not enough damage . I LOVE your clamps !
Excellent work.
When you start speaking always mute the backing sound.
Thanks, coincidentally, I have one just like that, and need to do the same thing.
Hi there, old timer piano and furniture restorer here in the UK, do you not ever warm your knives or use a little white vinegar to help melt/ease the glue? Great video thank you
Thank you Mr. SHIELDS! YOUR MOST EXCELLANT TECHNIQUE A TREMENDOUS INSPIRATION! I DID NOT KNOW THAT BUZZING COULD COME FROM ILL FITTED BRIDGE! THIS WAS REVALATION TO ME. Can you make a video on how to install aluminum violin bow tip?
What kind of glue are you using?
Interesting
I have a big question. Will French Polishes working over an oil varnished violin? If it doesn't, how do you Polish/retouches an oil varnished violin? What's the difference between an oil varnished violin and a spirit varnished violin?
A shellac French polish will work on an oil varnish.
That hide glue is a wonderglue. Permanent, yet undoable. I just tried using fish glue to re-attach a violin neck. I tested the glue by letting a bit dry up hard, then sitting in some water. It completely dissolved. I hesitate to glue the top on with it though. I'll go with the hide glue on that. Thanks for sharing.
A lot of careful artistic work into making this critical part. I have my violin in a well known shop in Glendale, California where they are cutting a new bridge for it. I will have a greater appreciation of that new bridge now that I have seen the process. I am curious. Does the "heart" and "comma" shapes on the bridge really produce better sound or is it just tradition? Thank you for letting us appreciate your fine work.
May i ask what you cleaned the violin with? Awesome videos by the way. Thank you for sharing Also, did you use the thumb plane on both faces ?
info about the nkife ou are using i want to bu one but where great video
Hello i love youre videos . Question where to buy the blade or knife you use to cut the wood or wedges thanks
Interesting, wouldn't some light heat soften the glue and ease the separation?

A most excellent tutorial ! ! ! Thanks for sharing your method ! ! !
I just acquired a copy also that Im taking to be restored. What would you say the violin is worth when you are done with it, and what would all this cost to have done? (US dollars)
19:31 Restringing the Cello, these strings appear to be some kind of Flatwound strings. Fun fact Bowed Stringed instruments use Flatwound strings which came as early as 1874 by Hamilton. They were originally designed to replace the Gut strings on Bowed Stringed instruments because 1) they last many times as long, 2) they hold tune better, & 3) the flat surface increases the contact area w/ the bow giving you faster bow response.
What's the purpose for the bushing?
I had to laugh! A luthier introducing his video with a piano piece! LOL So many great violin works! LOL (not a serious criticism)
Hey from USA, Midwest
Hello, Paul. New subscriber here. I’m trying to work my way through your video library. You invited further questions in this one, and I do have one. Would you consider doing a tour of your workshop as a dedicated video?
Nice video. How do you "refresh " the bow-varnish? Can you make a video of that?
Just excellent - I set a neck on a new build not to my Satisfaction and this showed me how to get it back out and - yep - do it again! 🤦♂️
Just what i was looking for a video on how to polish a fiddle when i waas looking for a video on how to shape a bridge
That would be great if it was an authentic JBV. You'd have your hands on a half million dollar violin.
Sorry but I was almost turning of your video! Fortunately you took the chin rest! But before I go without finishing your video I must mention that you have a very beautiful watch that can also scratch your job!!! Maybe i can finish to see your video to learn with all your mistakes that I should avoid fixing my violin!
Gracias por la detallada explicación del pegado de la placa con la cuerda, me sirvió mucho!! 🇲🇽
Good to hear how you got started Paul. Watching with grandma.
In what type of case does a maggini fit in???
Hi Paul, how do I contact you? I have an old violin from the 1700s given to me by my father that needs some TLC. I live in Tassie. Thanks, Mary
I just started my first neck reset on my old Stainer. The fingerboard height above the top is slightly less than 3/4 of an inch. I’m also going to refinish it. A previous owner (or someone) put a nitrocellulose finish on it. I’m going for dewaxed shellac and then True Oil. Unconventional but I want to see how it works out. Thanks much! 😎🎻
Very cool video. Thank you.
Thank you very for very interesting and educational video. I have two questions for you. What kind of glue do you use? And how do you adjust new tip if it doesn’t fit tip of the bow? Thank you again, IR
Good info, thanks for sharing!
Paul, you haven’t posted a vid in a while just checking you’re ok mate 🙏🏼
Please make more videos. Even if they are impromptu and unedited. I watch Your videos over and over. I find them very interesting. Thanks Paul!
It's a Stradivarius Copy
So good to see the fine work done by hand!! (As a Triumph guy, gotta love the Vincent mug 🙂)
its great
absolutely fantastic!
Nice Work!!
Super 💓
Have you ever compared this kind of patch in both ways? (along grain/rectangular to grain) If not is somebody in the world to have proven by comparismn? Because just guessing is just guessing. I think this smal area wouldn´t do a difference, but the glue combined with roughness while work, would change more than the rectangular version. Your skill is perfect.
Happy New Year, Paul! Wishing you and your family a very happy and prosperous 2022!
Thankyou! Happy new year to you also🎉
Wow! What a masterful job! I’ve seen people (on TH-cam) inlay cracks before, but only straight ones. Never saw a jagged crack like that filled before. Also, the patch fit so perfectly. I really like how you aged the patch, as well. Amazing work mate! I’m curious, why would the back crack from the sound post, when maple is so much harder than spruce? Anyway, a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year to you, and your family.
Thanks Rick! And a very happy new year to you as well mate. The reason I believe the back cracks but top didn't, so the back is a hard wood yes but it's also more brittle, the spruce while soft has a cushioning effect where the grain compacts before cracking, it also has counter pressure from the bridge foot supporting it and this also absorbs the energy from the impact. If the impact is from the top though it is carried through the bridge and soundpost to the back plate, the energy is then expended in full force on that one small area and if the soundpost is positioned right along a grain line then is likely to crack. I hope that makes sense. It's only my ideas on the subject there could be other factors involved as well.
Happy new year Paul 🙏🏼🎉
Thanks mate, and a Happy new year to you and yours as well🙂
