    My first cousin and I share not only grandparents but ggp, gggp and so on. Is the ideal to place other lesser cm, specific to one line matches on the individual great grandparents? I understood what I asked but not sure if it is understandable to you.

    • @VanessaBland
      @VanessaBland หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think I understand. I probably wouldn't include a first cousin because you're likely to share a large amount of DNA (About 12%). Painting big chunks is less helpful than the small sections of more distant cousins. Does this help?

    • @VanessaBland
      @VanessaBland หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you are going to include them, you'd label them as the nearest shared ancestors (so with your grandparents rather than gap, gggp etc)

      @@VanessaBland I see that I asked you a question a couple years ago too, thank you. I bounce off and on with the program/ I actually need this 1st cousin because my paternal grandmother was an only child with two deep mysteries, the first is that I do not know her mom's mom or dad, only her grandparents as she is shown living in the home with grandparents when she was 10 or 11 years old (1900), but no indication if she is from one of the sons or daughters. Guessing it was a daughter as she was one of 3 granddaughters in the home with no viable mom there or elsewhere I could find, but it could be a son also. My grandmother was born in 1904, now her mom seemed to be in her early teens when my grandmother was born and her late teens when she passed away. To add to that grandmother's father who raised her had a couple of other children who had offspring but they did not live long enough to have known offspring themselves that I know of to be tested. Why does explaining genetic relationships always sound like a Cat In The Hat book :) I want to see who shares with my 1C and myself to narrow down the elusive others, hoping there is an NPE. I have a lot of matches on my grandmother's mom's family, I know their names and DNA bears that out, but need more specificity about my great-grandmother. I didn't intend to write a booklet, but I'll will leave it, thank you again

    I've been trying to follow along with not just your video but others. Gedmatch has since changed how they show the list you show at 3:46. The "A" everyone talks about is no longer in gedmatch. do I just need to do a one-to-one autosomal with every match?

    • @VanessaBland

      Thanks for your comment! I didn't know they'd changed this, how annoying. Yes, you'd need to copy the other person's kit number and then do an autosomal one-to-one for each match (or at least each match that you think might be relevant). I hope this helps! Good luck with it :)

    About 2 years ago I started researching my DNA and my ancestry. I was shocked at the results. First, I found out that one of my direct ancestors was killed in the Salem Witch Trials. Then I discovered a lot of Northwestern European ancestry. I knew I have a ton of English ancestry but had no clue about the Scandinavian heritage. I dug deeper into that and was able to trace back to some direct ancestors that were Vikings in various areas in Northwest Europe. Pretty cool. I also found distant relationships to some well known historical figures, including some unsavory ones. My True Ancestry was one of the tools I used and once I learned how to use it was a great resource. For a history teacher like myself it has been amazing to see my family history!

      Wow thanks for sharing! It's so exciting to link our ancestors to events in history (the good and the bad). Salem Witch Trials and Vikings are both exciting finds. 240 years ago... French expedition in preparation In 1784 French King Louis XVI got interested in organizing a scientific world circumnavigation expedition to complete the Pacific discoveries made by British naval officer/cartographer James Cook. Besides cartographic & scientific objectives, the French were interested in establishing colonial bases in the North & South Pacific. French naval officer Jean-François de La Pérouse was appointed leader as preparation involved cooperation with the British, anti-scurvy measures, chronometers and navigational instruments, reclassifying storeships as expeditionary frigates (La Boussole and L'Astrolabe). A lot of prearation went into getting the crew together as 10 scientists (astronomer, cartographer, mathematician, botanist, ...) were selected and even a 2nd Lieutenant named Napoléon Bonaparte was expedetion member candidate but wasn't selected in the end. The expedition carried modified sextants, Ramsden telescopes, 5 Horloges à Longitude made by Ferdinand Berthoud (n° 18, 19, 25, 27 & 29) a British chronometer and even 2 Montgolfier hot air balloons! Setting off from Brest on August 1, 1785, the expedition sailed westwards visiting Brazil, Chile, Easter island, Maui, California, Alaska, Kamchatska, Japan, China, Manilla, Samoa, Tonga before reaching Sydney Australia in January 1788. Spending 6 weeks in Sydney, the French set up an observatory and a botanical garden. Anno 2024 "La Pérouse" remains a suburb of Sydney. In March 1788, completely resuppield with water & food, the expedition continued towards the Solomons but both ships were lost in a storm wrecking on the reefs in the Solomon islands. Nothing was heard from the expedition and on January 21, 1793, right before his execution French King Louis XVI uttered the words " A-t'on de nouvelles de monsieur La Pérouse? " In 1825 rumours circulated that New Caledonian natives were seen wearing French uniformes with Louis XVI medals but in 1826 Irish Captain Peter Dillon passing through Solomons learned about 2 French ships that sank at the coast of Vanikoro. Sailing to the little island, he effectively found remains and located one of the anchors of the French ships, which were identified as parts of "L'Astrolabe" in 1828. 60 years ago, in 1964, a French expedition identified the shipwreck of "La Boussoule" but "L'Astrolabe" was only retrieved by 2003. One of the great maritime mysteries, the search for the La Pérouse expedition reads like a thriller involving the search for the "Bounty" mutineers and identifying the dead bodies on Vanikoro. Moreover the expedition was mentioned in Jules Verne's "20000 Leagues Uder the Seas" and among 50 place names in honour of La Pérouse there's a crater on the Moon!

    I’ve just started tracking my family history found a young girl who would have been my great great great grandfathers sister her death was in 1858 she sadly died at 11 years old from tetanus. Her mother never came to collect her body (her father my 4th great grandfather died in 1855 at the age of 32 from inflammation of the lungs he is buried in an unknown location at Camperdown cemetery ) I recently got my hand on her death certificate ‘Jane Rebecca wadley ‘not really much on it says she was buried in Presbyterian cemetery I assume she would have been buried at Devonshire street no application was put in to have her moved probably because the family was poor the husband dead and I guess the mother remarried looking further into it. I didn't pay any extra, but I had the highest level available at that time (I think there are newer higher levels now). Level 2 (Knight) currently allows 2 kits. Level 3 (King) allows 5. And higher levels allow even more. Check here for details: mytrueancestry.com/en/prices

    I always thought my #1 single population match being Danish was die to being German and Dutch with ancient tribes arrived in via Scandinavia, however, I recently discovered that my Northwest German ancestor was originally a Scandinavian soldier, who fought with King Gustavus Adolphus II in the 30 Years War before settling in Westphalia. The DNA does not lie, and if the database is large and diverse, it will give you a very good idea of who you are. I was adopted, so this is huge for me. Peace

    I have downloaded my raw data but the x data from my autosomal txt file went missing. I have haplogroup data both mitrocondrial and y-data but I cannot run that thru Gedmatch. 😢

      Which company did you test with? Did you try downloading it again?

      Living DNA. They say X chromosome is not what they test in their DNA-test. I have provided Gedmatch with my autosomal data. I have a result which matches well with the typical Swedish person. Basically there is three components in my deep ancestry. European hunter-gatherer, Anatolian farmer and Caucasus hunter-gatherer. The latter being a proxy for basal Eurasian component.

    But why pay if results are not correct? I think I'm just gonna stick with the free version. I don't wanna pay to they tell me whatever they want

      I paid so people could see what the results look like. I'd say it's for entertainment purposes only! Thanks for the comment :)

    Thank you for the informative video. It was important to hear what mistakes you made as a beginner in the genealogy business! Where I disagree with you is about the credentials. Serious genealogists take the time and make the effort to become credentialed. Why? Not because it is demanded by the law, but because it guarantees a certain standard of work and protects clients from getting poor quality research. Unlike other research fields, where small mistakes in data interpretation don’t carry much weight in the final analysis, a small mistake in genealogy can lead to a completely wrong family tree. The standards of the field have been set by wonderful professionals who have done this work for decades and have much more experience than most of us. They are trying to make genealogy a recognized scientific field of research and have done a great job in setting import standards. I have done genealogy as a hobby for decades. I thought I was pretty good. In fact, I was ready to write my family’s story in a book. I thought I would take a course or two just to make sure I was the best I could be-and discovered how unprepared I was. In the meantime I have joined study groups and am on my way to becoming credentialed. It is a long but important process, but knowing what I know now, I would never hire someone who was not credentialed. Vanessa, why don’t you take your first step towards becoming credentialed?

    To be fair it is only because people like you have built these trees that the information is available in the first place. So, no, you have not been wasting your life.

    I have some from Japan and Thailand from around 1650, does that mean that they were my ancestors?

      Could be! But remember to do research using records to be sure. Ethnicity estimates aren't always perfectly accurate. Thanks for watching :)

      Yeah, it is a bit odd for females to see those results!! They are just predictions based on your matches.

    Do you recommend ancestry or find my past for Australians?

    • @VanessaBland
      @VanessaBland 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question! They both have a lot of good resources so you can't go wrong with either. I find Ancestry good for general use and tree building, plus the DNA, but I think Findmypast has some fantastic record collections that aren't available on Ancestry. It's worth getting a short-term subscription for each and trying them out one at a time before committing to a longer yearly subscription. Try a month of each and see how you feel. Personally, I have used both at different times and found both helpful. I hope this answer helps!! Good luck with your research :)
