Is that a limestone sill? When do you remove the shims? Thanks. Great video.

That hurt watching him hammer in the jack stud on the finished floor. Lots of ways to avoid gouging a trail through a finished floor. I'm also confused why you put up a massive header to take a load but didn't build any temp walls to support the load?
@@bobcougar77 yep, we are totally redoing his kitchen, floor is torn out. And yes, the header is supporting a truss roof with a conventional rafter roof that ties into it above that wall……. Not really load bearing but kinda bearing some weight
Wouldnt that make it briddle?
No…. It’s probably more like a 2.5 to 1 ratio which is on the richer end of a mix, definitely not brittle
Great installation video! The heat pump made it a bit trickier, but it turned out to be easier than expected. Thanks for sharing! 🙌
@@corro-protec Hey thanks! It indeed was a simple install!
What if you dont have an outlet in there. Mine is on the other side of the hallway
@@jondavid1256 you could be an underachiever and use an extension cord or be a stud and run a new outlet, wouldn’t be too difficult. It doesn’t need its own circuit, so you could bounce off another outlet somewhere close
very nice (borat voice)
Chenquieh!!
Looks neat, but you still need to cut a hole in the siding to put in and recess the mounting block, but I guess you mean not to cut through the wall entirely? Not sure I like the mounting block though-imho it disrupts the overall horizontal vinyl too much since you’ve now got quite an edge around the outlet. I recently installed an exterior outlet and precisely cut a shingle just to get to the wooden board on which that was attached; drilled a fine hole through that from the inside, put my conduit through, sealed the hole neatly with duct seal, mounted my box in the shingle cavity and siliconed around the edges; fits perfectly and fully watertight. I can see the use of that little drip edge, but I think if the outlet is recessed in the shingle, like I did, such a little edge would actually be a little pointless.
Sounds like you did a nice install! I cut a hole in the siding but was careful not to disturb the tyvek, except for where the wire comes through obviously. If I were to recess the box into the siding, I would have to penetrate the tyvek and sheathing of the home. Instead of a small penetration for the wire, this would create a larger path for cold air / bugs / water. In a new build scenario, your method could be easily air sealed, it is more difficult in a retro fit scenario. That is why I chose function over form for my outlet mount😁
@@thedustybuilder Got it, yeah, our house is from the 60s and doesn't have Tyvek or any other kind of membrane, or other obstacles really. You could of course reseal the Tyvek, but those seals are a pain in the backside and often present more risk than solutions. Anyway, enjoyed your video, and despite our setups being different, has been useful for me!

Hello! There was no settling, cracking or movement of the concrete. The beam above was in good shape and hadn't settled at all. The only issue was the obvious deterioration of the post. IMHO, replacing a footing just to do it didn't seem warranted, the inspector agreed!

One last thing and crucial step you missed my friend was washing the concrete with muriatic acid. When concrete cures it exceeds those white mineral deposits. The acid will clean that all up, then you can seal for a beautiful finish.
@@AlMai222 Thank you…… does it also darken the color?
@@thedustybuilder Yes it does. Because it takes away the whiteness of the concrete, revealing the dark rocks. Use 4:1 water to muriatic acid ratio or slightly stronger, you should hear it sizzle a little bit, and just scrub around with a hard brush the day you come to cut then rinse off. It also slightly etches the concrete and creates a better long lasting bond for the sealer, all the companies do it
@@AlMai222 copy. I appreciate the tip, I’m going to give it a go on the next one!
Regarding the 2nd house ledger board - I am in New York State and they explicitly made this method illegal. The ledger must be directly against the wood structure so you would have to remove that brick. Simpson even makes hardware for mounting a ledger through brick veneer and onto the structure, but NY still will not let us use them. Apparently they just recently passed this law.
That is interesting. I really like the idea of omitting the ledger completely and using additional post and beams, no worries with flashing and proper….. blah blah blah

@@Ionizap thank you. My first boss in construction said if you go slow and think a little, you can build anything
I did continuous posts for the roof, and then another set of 3 shorter posts on the inside of those two carry the deck beam. I liked the idea of having the loads carried separate and avoiding some joist hangers.
@@ryanmartin9850 thoughtful design! Nice
All the failure points will be hidden by the trim. The first ones “beam” is 100% wrong along with all the extra 2x. The second one is going to have a ledger failure as well as having incorrect hardware.
@@stevenfoust3782 the ledger is legit, it has some kind of hardware to keep it off the brick. The first beam seems wrong at first, but it satisfies code because the beam bears directly on wood
Both ways will fail
@@stevenfoust3782 seriously? They both could be improved, but fail?

So they've been doing this in Australia for about 120 years and we have these galvanised steel brackets that allow the wood to sit proud of the ground (by about five inches so it's never in contact with the soil. They kind of look like a square U on a pipe where the pipe embeds in concrete, and there is a special type of concrete used with a coarse aggregate that doesn't react to the soil so poorly. It's weird not seeing these on American houses.
@@classydays43 we have them…. But more importantly… Aussie Aussie Aussie!!!!
@@thedustybuilder oi oi oi!!!
@@classydays43 lol….. thank you! I did study abroad there, wanted to stay !
You are aware that there are appx 125 - 150 Million homes in the USA? These are 2 of them. There are many engineered post mounts, and separating devices. I've spent many many months in Australia from Brisbane to Perth and have been on many decks that had no proper mounting. It's weird to judge ALL Americans, homes or otherwise, by 2 examples. But here we are.
@@me1assassin I literally live in Australia and not a single deck I have seen - and we have them in droves - built by a carpenter suspends the wood from the ground. If anyone is not doing that then the deck was built with pallet wood and paid for with a slab for beer.
I've built both ways, just depends on the job
@@dillonventola408 cool, do you have a preference? Also did you do anything to protect that 2x6 touching the concrete?
@@thedustybuilder usually we secured all of our beams in a bracket that's bolted into the cement that keeps them elivated and off of the ground from direct contact . Everything was pressure treated to stand up to the harsh winters here.
