    I think there is no need for it to hurt like hell to make this transition. Yes, there will be aches from muscles waking up and things stretching, and becoming mobile that were restricted by typical footwear. But it will only 'thrash your feet' if you abruptly swap shoes and carry on doing everything you did in the old, cushiony restrictive shoes. That would be kind of like coming out of a body cast and jumping right into an ambitious weight-training program. You wouldn't do that. You would start easy and for short sessions and build up the intensity & duration gradually.

    As you probably know, the price is not about amount of material. It's research/design/development costs and market size. In some of the companies (Vivobarefoot for one) it's also about company philosophy of being responsible to people and the environment. Edit to add: Also this is not to say I don't appreciate your video; I very much do! Thanks for sharing your experience and recommending this healthy change to everyone.

  • @MichaelSheaAudio

    I'm close to a year in barefoot shoes. I overpronated and spent almost a decade in ugly running shoes just so I could walk without joint pain. I really didn't want to make the investment in orthotics, and a google search brought me to barefoot shoes. With that came the education of foot health and how I can change my gait to walk without joint pain, and I've been doing just that. It really is life-changing. In my time in barefoot shoes, not a single person has said anything about my shoes unless I mentioned them first. Maybe it's a Canadian culture thing? I don't know. I was even at the tailor's today getting some shorts fitted, and I'm standing there in my toe socks, and he didn't say anything about them. I've had a much different experience than others I guess. :P And on the topic of price, there is a reason that they're more expensive, it's not as simple as less material should cost less money. All barefoot shoe companies, even Vivo and Xero, are small companies. They have to make their own lasts, their own designs, everything is made from scratch. They also prioritize ethics, and ethics aren't cheap. The Amazon brands or the big shoe corporations can have shoes made in Asian sweat shops for a few dollars, but companies like Vivo have their shoes made fairly in Europe. Some companies like Xero have them made in China, but they insist that they are compliant with fair labor guidelines and Steven Sashen himself visits the factory frequently. It also matters what materials are used and how they're sourced. It's a whole thing. 😅

    Huge proponent of barefoot shoes here. As you found out, easing into wearing barefoot shoes is generally a good idea. Both due to the pain you describe, but also because you calves will be stretched a lot more than in regular shoes that generally have a raised heel. Definitely remember my calves being quite sore for a week or two. I also ended up going up one shoe size on regular shoes and always wear them very loose.

    for guys that are build with really long limbs, in-particular a long set of forearms, I personally was getting so much of a stretch on barbell bench press my shoulders would get cooked and could barely handle much volume. during my time powerlifting with a coach my shoulders never felt healthy, always sore and stiff. even with proper form. wasnt until i dropped barbell benching entirely and switching to mostly dips, push ups (with paralets for ROM) and its variations i noticed my pecs were still growing but my shoulders have never felt better. also emphasizing on stretching out still. was making okay gains with barbell but i could CONSISTENTLY train with enough intensity and volume without needing to constantly deload for my shoulders to catch up. calisthenics is the way for upperbody imo

    I think that if your goal is to train the muscle the best, you should not remove you points of contact, since now you have to use your core muscles, while you want to train your chest om the standing press machine, for example. I think that the barbell just limits you to a single movement, by which you might not be training the whole pack. And of course the stretch. Whereas with the dumbbels, which are less stable, you have to use more of your pack. Idk… that’s my thought

    • @thegraymedium_

    Good work bro, Do you know if ring dips are safer for the shoulders than parallel dips?

    • @thegraymedium_
      @thegraymedium_ 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Loaded Question Right there: I generally find that once you have the correct stability any free range movement is better for your joints that a more fixed movement simply because it allows you to follow a path of motion that feels best with your own anatomy. For instance: With a dumbbell shoulder press you can press thew weights up in a path that feels best to you, whereas with a machine should press the range of motion is in a fixed position that may not work with your anatomy well. That being said, you should definitely use a lighter weight when doing the free weight alternative. Regarding the ring dip vs the parallel bar dips: You should 100% start with parallel bar dips and then practice taking that movement deeper and deeper (along with doing proper shoulder mobility warm ups) until you feel comfortable enough to hop on rings. At that point I do think that ring dips will feel way better on your shoulders. So, ultimately do think that ring dips are safer however, you should definitely progress up to them + try it out for yourself because that is just my personal experience.

I don't understand why this challenge demands non fiction books to bre read instead of fiction, especially when a lot of these books are in my opinion very surface level books (those economy ones or one I enjoyed a long time ago but wouldn't return to: atomic habits). your video was recommended to me so I've never seen you before but this was a great watch!

    Idk man, I catch the occasional stray hate comment from an animal (always a cat). In all seriousness, the transition of the Christian cross from a circular pattern to ellipse was a very interesting interpretation of the symbolism used in the creating of the Chirstian "logo". I'm going to try and be more aware of the symbolism we see in day to day life.

      Lmao yea, ima dog person myself 😂. But yes, symbolism is pretty interesting stuff!

    Appreciate the vlogging content! Carrying around a camera all day takes dedication. Very refreshing to hear a personal trainer that is into the stretch mediated hypertrophy research. I can't tell you how many trainers at the gym I go to who preach light weights and a huge focus on "the squeeze". Keep it up

      Dude I totally feel you on that one. Too many people simply don’t lift heavy enough and do too much junk volume. Thanks for showing love brotha !

    The pile of clothes still keeps me up at night😭. I really enjoyed the portion explaining why the unconscious mind necessarily communicates abstractly because clear thought can only come from the conscious mind. Looking forward to the next 4 parts!

    I'm not sure if its the algorithm that's suggesting all the Carl Jung/spiritual/unconscious content to me recently but I keep seeing more videos about the unconscious pop up as well as the "Red book". I've started on reading his book on memories dreams and reflections, it's most curious I admit. I really wonder if its a new trend that's beginning to unfold about the spirit and the unconscious or have I just became more aware of the literature/content? Have you seen any new trends about this? I recently had a dream a strange dream where a large flood scattered across the land, streaming wide and fast towards the right. I peer over to my right and I see refugee's fleeing into what appears to be a mountain range, a mother was carrying a baby and promptly his head set on fire, shortly to be extinguished.

      I do think that Carl Jung has begun to gain some popularity more recently because of the popularity of Jordan Peterson (who mentions Jung like every 10 seconds 😂). He’s one of the most cited names ever in the field of psychology but I think he’s definitely trending amongst the younger generations now. Regarding your strange dream: that’s super gnarly man. I guess this is where the book would encourage you to record you dream and look to compare it to other dreams you’ve had in order to look for similarities !
