Video Games and the Realism Movement
The realism art movement can lead us to learn more about realism in games. There is no need to hold games to a standard of realism when it comes to their design. Abstractions and deliberate portrayals of emotions can add much more depth, but they need to employ a couple of tactics to keep the game feeling real.
While still relating to Minecraft, this video essay isn’t as Minecraft focused as my previous ones. Sorry if that disappoints you.

I think that sleeping should need to take a few minutes unless you activate a nightmare, in which you’ll have to fight a few phantoms. Survive the dream, and you’ll get the ability to sleep like how you currently can for that night and the next three nights. Fail, and some non-creeper common mob will spawn nearby. Alternatively, the more a player sleeps, the greater of a chance they have of spawning in a phantom while sleeping, which would wake them up and force them to face the threat. If it’s only ever one phantom, but they have complex mechanics like dodging attacks from a certain range and turning semi-invisible (similar to spiders with an invisibility potion effect) when they are in the light would make this threat truly scary. I do think phantoms should be found in the height extremes of the world, both in the mountains and the dark recesses of the caves. In the mountains they will spawn in groups and have increased knockback, but have more charge-happy AI and less nightmare aspects like the invisible in light detail. Main problem is groups and knockback, though these phantoms will actually give you membranes. The membranes will fill an item’s durability to full, and each replaced durability point takes two uses of the tool to go down. With Unbreaking III, each durability point takes 6 inputs to go down compared to a non-enchanted tool without any membrane stuff. While not as good as mending, this may encourage people to go out of their way to fight these dangerous mobs. As for the cave phantoms, I was thinking they could be like a more aggressive version of a bat’s movement with poison bites like cave spiders. They would typically come in groups of two-three. Also bats should drop wings which can be used for very temporary flight early-game. Totems of Undying should be used by evokes during raids, so the only time you can collect one is in woodland mansions, making raid farms only decent, totems very rare, and to provide exploration incentive, it’s brilliant. Also for exploration purposes, no structure should spawn in a 1,000 block radius of the spawn point/ center point of the seed. You’ve got to go on a little quest to get to one. Maybe 1,000 blocks is a little too harsh, but I think 400 at least. Also, making guardians having the chance to drop more loot than any other mob and including their spikes could be cool. Making the elder guardians have a chance to drop gold, diamonds, and emeralds, along with their special spikes and eye, the latter of which can give mining fatigue III to nearby mobs/players as well as firing a powerful laser beam. Balance this out by making the invisibility potion make hostile and neutral mobs not aggro on you, even when hit, except for a few mobs like guardians, and you can make monuments more of a threat. Also sponges can be placed on any surface of a water source block and eliminate more water. Horse armor should have unique uses. Iron is the most protective, but makes turning harder. Gold can make horses go faster and at top speed can make them jump higher and farther, but it takes a while to overcome the downside of gold’s weight. Diamond is fairly protective and makes horses a little faster. It also eliminates their fear of water and enables them to swim. Leather armor only adds a little protection with no downside, also it’s colorable. Boats can have lanterns put on the back for visibility. Up to four dispensers (two for each side with paddles) can be placed on the boat. Boats are made with five planks and two shovels, but the shovel tier determines how easily corners can be turned and the top speed of the boat. As far as minecarts go, furnace minecarts can now go completely horizontal fan amount of blocks equal to how much fuel they provide, so a lava bucket could propel a furnace minecart, without any further help, 100 blocks before gravity affects it again. It will also make any minecarts directly in front of it also defy gravity, allowing for trains. These things can deal a ton of damage, instakill at topspeed, but don’t accelerate once the track below them stops. Regular rails and powered rails allow minecarts to go a bit faster in general, and will unpowered copper rails are as good as ordinary rail but with less from the crafting table, lightning-charged rails can allow for higher top speeds/accelerations than powered rails. Also, Diamond rails can allow a minecart at any speed to turn a bend, keeping old rollercoaster designs intact except for changes to the turn pieces. Also, a regular minecart can go on a Diamond rail and not decelerate for the next few blocks, even if no rails are there (it should be noted that unaccompanied non-furnace minecarts would still need blocks there or else they’ll fall. In the case of a furnace minecart going over a Diamond track, their minecart will not have to waste any fuel going over the next few solid or air blocks. Diamond tracks can also go vertical and upside down, meaning that loop-di-loops are possible with enough speed. That’s all my ideas for now.

Any game's atmosphere will change if it has a growing fan base like minecraft. If they don't add structures, the game will feel boring and repetitive. Atmospheric change is the byproduct of updates and growing fan bases and you can't stop it, plus why don't you just play the old version if it suits you?

I've watched hundreds of videos from many different creators in this vein. I guess you would call them Minecraft critiques or Manifestos (lol). I want you to know that you make the best ones. Genuinely the best. You have a thoughtful, humble and wise approach that others lack. I hope people learn from your approach which takes into account all sides of the issue and actually gets to the core of Minecraft's design. I am working on designing a mod that will overhaul the entire game, while retaining the vanilla experience and helping the game to be more cohesive. I don't code, so I plan to one day make videos detailing all my ideas and then use feedback to refine them. I am very grateful for these principles that you've outlined and will keep them in mind as I develop my ideas.

I miss the days where you were completely alone and it felt like you were just surviving on a alien planet, even the music felt like it was for the WORLD, not the player. It gave meaning to what you did in the world, not meaning for what enviorment you were in. new music, while high quality obviously, doesn't fit the vibe I play Minecraft for, so I use a C418 only resource pack. The caves and cliffs terrain was a good choice, because before the terrain was more realistic than beta, but flat and boring, so this adds excitement, but is still a step towards making the world feel inhabited and like earth, which I dont like.

I miss beta 1.7 when the only structure was the dungeon. There was nothing but you, hostile enemies, and random free range barn animals. The game didnt have enchanting, potions, and dragon fights; it didnt go for a fantasy twist. Back in the day it felt apocalyptic. Lots of human undead with only you being the only sapient person alive with jeans and a tshirt (steve's drip). Nowadays you cant walk 5 blocks without landing in a village. Or if you dont explore, you cant go 5 seconds without a wandering trader or illagers finding you. Leave me alone for half a second and let me embrace the liminal flow this game used to have

I like it when realism is more of a motive for gameplay or story. Having more realistic features can make some things in video games more fun and immersive such as driving, Grand Theft Auto IV, the Driver Series. They do it well because those games are good examples of using realism to enhance gameplay because they take the fun and challenging parts out of real life as the driving in these games are more of a combination of arcade and realism.

This is the main reason I haven't updated past 1.17.1 (used to be an even older version). I don't want to update because I feel like 1.18's ancient cities and structures from the next updates just make the world too filled up. I was reluctant to update too when 1.16 was released, because stuff like bastions just made the world so full I kinda hated it. I eventually updated but I still don't like them. Maybe it's the nostalgia but every time a major change came to be I'd delay the update for months or even years. There's one thing I don't agree with, though. I think The End should stay as it is. I'd even wish for it to remain the original island only (although the elytra is awesome), because it gives that "End" atmosphere even more (IMO), a vast space of nothingness but a chunk of floating land. Edit: I'd also like to add that releases 1.6.4 and below had the advantage of old world generation, which had a much larger surface area than 1.7 and later, which, for me, made the most sense. Island continents (although all continents are already islands irl) with loads of ocean to explore all around. However, the lack of ocean structures made them extremely dull except for the ability to find mushroom islands. Nice video.

I'd argue that neither the presence, nor amount of structure cause the feeling of being alone to dissapear. You could be lost in a dungeon covering the entirety of a map still feel this survivalist feeling of reclusion. I think this falsely attributing the problem to structure when the problem is actually about entities and how structure fit in each biome. Finding villages after villages is only less atmospheric because they're full of villager. If there were nearly only empty villages, finding a village with villager would also give that feeling of discovery. I think the main problem of the ocean temple is that they don't look like they're in ruin, you'd get back the mystification if the ocean floor was regularly cover in ruins and debris like the vestige of a war that started eons ago. I noticed you had no problem with mansions, but I believe they could be slightly improve if they were less populated, with the occasional pillager in a room or two and some mansions being completely empty as if they had been abandonned as their inhabitants moved somewhere else in a hurry. All of that to say, I don't think the structure are the problem, structures belong in an empty world, people, less so.
