    What movie is this?

  • @OJTPhD

MEMORIAM: Zelda ‘Beverly’ Rubenstein was born for the role of “Tangina”. She worked at Juicy Harvey’s in Burbank California in the ‘70’s, quitting her job there to make this movie, leaving behind an owner, Harvey Kaplan, who mistreated her whenever he was having a bad day (mostly annoyed with each other from years of being coworkers, Harvey and Beverly behaved like disgruntled brother and sister, most times. Doug Spicer, the head cook at the time, ridiculed her incessantly and one day pulled me aside to show me her timecard, in the name of ‘Zelda’ (which, of course, he did while snickering - The day he quit was a good day!). Meanwhile, ‘Beverly’ (Zelda) left abruptly one day not long afterwards and never returned - can’t say I blame her!). I wasn’t surprised, though it wasn’t clear why at the time, because she’d begun to talk about an opportunity to leave and never look back). I recall being happy for her departure, knowing only it was what she’d desperately wanted. Beverly was a hard worker, steadfast and diligent, seemingly hardened by a life a similar mistreatment by others. Not an angry person, actually quite tolerant of others, she was no push over and talking with her a few moments were enough to know this was true. I met her at 15, a bus boy at the ‘custom’ burger joint where we served customers attending the Johnny Carson show across the street at NBC studios. My favorite line, “You’re right. YOU go!” is classic Beverly! Pure poetry and, folks, she was NOT acting! RIP, Beverly! See ya’ on the other side!

Sooo... This is fiction but about true life and life after our deaths. False Light Deception - Buddhists, Christians, Natives - everyone knows about this, which is why we must remain vigilant and undistracted while living in our physical bodies. The Fasle Light will feed on us and take us down...<3<3<3

Great scene. That first shot is a whole 1 minute and 40 seconds, with a *lot* going on in terms of stage direction and coordination-- the actors having to move around in complex ways, time things just right (even from off-camera), etc. It's so well-executed because they're all pros. I wonder how many takes they had to do.

It's so sad Heather O'Rourke only lived to be 12 years old. Zelda Rubinstein won a well-deserved Best Supporting Actress Oscar for this role.

So in the second movie we learn there was an evil cult leader, but he can return as his human form when he wants. Even travel far away from the Freeling house. What are the odds the house would be on top of two seperate evil entities? Both wanting to use the little girl.

I have watched this movie I don’t even know how many times. I was 10 when it came out and when it was on tv me and my best friend at the time recorded the whole movie on cassette tape and then we wrote down all of the dialogue and acted out the scenes. Man those were good times!

This movie is so well made. So stylish. The trappings of the ordinary are everywhere but nothing looks real. It is so detailed and grand, like a picture from the forties. The performances are so fresh. I think much of this is now overlooked because of the tragic deaths of some of the actors.

This character could ONLY have been played by Zelda. Imagine had they gone with just a normal person, this whole scene would’ve been a snooze fest. We are invested because Zelda’s magic is making us BELIEVE tangina is a real person.

I remember, as a kid, this scene creeping me out… not as much as others (the spectral hand coming out of the TV still beats them all), but still chilling. Then you become an adult and hearing of “the beast” *using* a child, lying to her… and it gets twice as chilling. _Ten_ times as chilling.

I have Tangina's monologue memorized. "There is no death. There is only a transition to a different sphere of consciousness. Carol Anne is not like those she's with. She is a living presence in their spiritual earthbound plain. They are attracted to the one thing about her that is different from themselves - her lifeforce. It is very strong. It gives off its own illumination. It is a light that implies life and memory of love and home and earthly pleasures, something they desperately desire but can't have anymore. Right now, she's the closest thing to that, and that is a terrible distraction from the real LIGHT that has finally come for them. You understand me? These souls, who for whatever reason are not at rest, are also not aware that they have passed on. They're not part of consciousness as we know it. They linger in a perpetual dreamstate, a nightmare from which they can not awake. Inside the spectral light is salvation, a window to the next plain. They must pass through this membrane where friends are waiting to guide them to new destinies. Carol Anne must help them cross over, and she will only hear her mother's voice. Now hold on to yourselves. [Tangina's tone becomes more cautious] There's one more thing. A terrible presence is in there with her. So much rage, so much betrayal, I've never sensed anything like it. I don't know what hovers over this house, but it was strong enough to punch a hole into this world and take your daughter away from you. It keeps Carol Anne very close to it and away from the spectral light. It LIES to her, it tells her things only a child could understand. It has been using her to restrain the others. To her, it simply IS another child. To us, it is the BEAST. Now, let's go get your daughter."

Good old 80’s PG. Saw this in a crowded theater by myself at 12 years old. The joys of being a feral Gen X kid. It blew my mind. The scene in bathroom where the ghost researcher tears off his own face really got the audience freaked out and on edge. One of my all time great movie going experiences !!

^ She's for sure been around this track many many times. She's a medium, so her specialty is the supernatural, both benevolent and malevolent. As the parapsychologist staying with the Freelings says, Tangina has "cleaned" many houses. However, as Tangina states, she's never sensed anything like this energy that has made its way into the Freeling's home. I guess that's what happens when you, for the purposes of profit and greed, build a bland uniform suburban community on top of a cemetery (whose interred bodies weren't moved) and desecrate the dead in this way.
