Who are we? We are Greg and Debbie, two 5th Dan black belts who have been part of the ISKF since the early 90s. We both have extensive competition experience at the national level, and have been assistant or head instructors of Shotokan clubs in the past. We currently train and help teach at Shotokan Karate Club of Maryland.
We feel very lucky to have received excellent training wherever we have lived (Philly, Penn State, Ohio State, Baltimore). We recognize that any skills we have developed are due to our instructors who poured their time into us, and want to share some of our insights with other karate players (karateka).
Look here for simple ideas for training at home, and in limited spaces (like hotel rooms). The goal of this page is to help karate players improve their skills by showing fun, simple ways to supplement your dojo training at home, or on the road. (We do not recommend beginning your karate journey online.) Keep training, even if just for 10 minutes each day!

Absolutely love training with you Sensei, I really enjoy to loudly KIAI on our ippon, my gorgeous boyfriend saw your video (he is a non karateka) but I’m trying to convince him to attend my dojo lol, he remarked you look really powerful, focused, disciplined, strong yet feminine and sexy in your white karate gi and black belt, I hope you take his remarks as a compliment, I must remember to wear my white 16 ounce tournament karate gi and black belt more often even if not training around our home, at least it will deter potential burglaries lol, OSS ❤️🥋...

This is the first time I’ve ever seen you guys and I am curious as to and technically I didn’t come up under a Shokhan. I came up under tradition, tae kwon do G de corn, which was actually you know derivative of them pretty much the same thing as shadow sort ofhot keto and various other stuff. I’m seeing something I never noticed before and maybe that’s just cause I’m not exposed to a lot of I’m a use the word pure just for this conversation show the con is when you’re using a vertical punch as opposed to a regular straight punch so what is the application for that in the beginning of these exercise exercises when you’re doing it.
Thanks for watching, and the question. This training was from a while ago so I don’t recall the specific reason we added it to drills (this was for a live zoom training during Covid), but in general Shotokan teaches vertical fist punches for “mid-range” distance. So we were just giving people practice with the muscles needed for this technique. Vertical punch, or tate-zuki, is generally for when someone is closer than a full range punch, but frankly could be used at any distance. Other styles only do vertical fist punching, and it can help keep your elbow and shoulder in good position, and avoid hyperextending your elbow. But, for some people, it could constrict how far they can pinch, so the regular or full punch can offer more distance. But, as with many things, it depends what you train your body to do.

Good instruction would recommend taking the watch off!
She does it to track some health data and learn more about how the body reacts to different activity. But we know it looks a bit odd on a gi - just do it when training on our own.
