Can I Trade £20 to a Black Opal by Flipping Gemstones?
Can I trade my way up from an initial £20 investment to a Black Opal by flipping gemstones?
As a Gemologist, it should come as no surprise that I like gemstones but one gem that I don't own is a Black Opal and I thought it was about time that I bought myself one!
And rather than just buying one, I wondered if I could trade my way to one by buying and selling gemstones?

Identifying Gemstones - Why Most Jewelers Can't!
มุมมอง 3.1K4 ปีที่แล้ว
In this short video, I explain why most jewelers can't confidently identify gemstones as a response to another TH-camr's video. Coloured gemstones such as Ruby, Sapphire, Amethyst, Aquamarine and Blue Topaz often cause jewelers problems as they don't know how to tell if the stone is real, man-made or a simulant. I know this to be true as I have not only been in the position where I couldn't but...

      I haven't done it personally but I know some gemmologists who have taken courses there and said it was good, it just doesn't have the same recognition as the courses from the GIA and Gem-A.

      @HaywoodsGems Thankyou for getting back to me. This was the conclusion I came to from my research too. Do you think it would limit career possibilities due to this fact that it is not as greatly recognised?

    I am considering a second career after retirement and interested in working in a gem lab, maybe 10-15 years from now. Do you think this is work that would survive the next 20 years, are there aspects that you think may become automated?

    • @HaywoodsGems
      @HaywoodsGems 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very difficult to say (as with many careers at the moment), I still think there will be a strong human element as many parts have subtleties such as identifying inclusions to see whether the stone is natural or synthetic and potential origin will be very difficult to automate.

  • @Opal.Workshop
    @Opal.Workshop ปีที่แล้ว

    Its a dark blue opal, not crystal. The price you paid is fine, especially as an international buyer who doesn't have access to field prices, crystal is when you can see through the stone when you hold up to the light , it looks yellow or orange when its crystal in saturated light.

    • @HaywoodsGems
      @HaywoodsGems ปีที่แล้ว

      You can see through the stone when you hold it up to the light and doesn't have grey or black potch on the back.

    Hi, can I ask if Gemology is typically reliable in terms of money and jobs? I am a junior in highschool and personally my dream is to be a Gemologist, but I know I need to apply soon if I need to choose something else. I have a lot of health problems and I’m mostly worried about the reliability of being able to take care of myself and my disabled sister. I have looked for jobs nearby, but the nearest are almost 4 hours away. I am just very concerned that it might not be a good option for me. Can you offer any advice on perhaps finding Gemology jobs and whether it offers financial stability?

    • @HaywoodsGems
      @HaywoodsGems ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I've done a video covering this (th-cam.com/video/BfIVOFlQe00/w-d-xo.html) as a follow-up to this one and there are very few gemologist jobs, it is more that there are careers where gemology is a useful skill to have but if financial stability is your primary concern, I think there are better career options out there such as medical, mental health or legal.

      Hi, Ebay is really hit and miss for gem lots and decent ones go for stupid money, a lot of the ones I bought were direct from people in the industry, mainly scrap dealers who I've got to know through being in the trade for a few years.

    Good day Sir, I'm getting an opportunity to work on board a cruise as a jewellery associate. My question is what are the qualities I need to possess to become one.? As an aside, is gemology a prerequisite to pursue the above trade.

    • @HaywoodsGems
      @HaywoodsGems ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, honestly, the most important skills are interpersonal and being able to sell and believe it or not, most people who work on the retail side have very little jewellery/gem knowledge before starting and learn on the job (depending on how good the employer’s training is). Gemology isn’t required but can be very helpful and when combined with the ability to sell is a very useful skill set.
