Fly-In Fishing for Walley and Pike Deep in the Remote Canada Backcountry with Wilderness Air Escapes
A fly-in fishing trip via float plane into a remote lake deep in the backcountry to do nothing but fish for walleye and pike all day has long been on my to-do list so I finally booked a trip with Wilderness Air Escapes in Ontario, Canada. They flew myself, my brother, and my nephew to a remote cabin on Solitary Lake for 4 days of fishing Heaven. Let’s just say we can’t wait to get back.

My buddy Cary and I planned on 2 nights and 3 days of canoeing and camping on the Neches River but the flow was so fast that we covered it in just 2 days. Because of the high water, finding a suitable campsite became an adventure. It was still a fun way to spend a few days on the river. Music: Old Friend - Silent Partner • Old Friend - Sile... Camping Cook Kit: DIY 2-Person Camp Kitchen Great for Motorcycle or Kayak
Hi Wander, this was a nice mod. I am taking a trip across the desert in a few weeks in Southern California. There is always a possibility that the bike might be dropped from time to time. Can you share how the tube has held up? Have you ever dropped the bike on the side of the tube? I saw another video from a guy who started with the same tube, but indicated it broke when he dropped the bike (its plastic, so no surprises). However, his mounting setup and location of the tube was different from yours. Look forward to hearing from you.
Hey justsomeguy, if I'm being totally honest with you, I wouldn't call this overly durable. I lent the bike to my nephew one time and he broke the tube in one fall. I easily replaced it and have taken a few spills myself since and the tube is still there but I do see some stress on the plastic tab so I don't expect it to hold up to too many more falls. In the end, if I were preparing for a big trip, I would add the tube and hope for the best. All I have in mine is my tool roll which I can easily lay flat in the bottom of my duffel that I use on big trips. In fact, I originally had a tube mounted in a different location that was too far underneath the fender and the tube was destroyed on day 1 of my Arkansas TAT trip so I had to lay the tool roll flat in my duffel for the rest of the trip. Nevertheless, I like having the tube where it is, despite the aforementioned weakness, so that my tools are conveniently with me whenever I ride even though I know that I will eventually have to replace the tube.
@@wanderbynature2508 Hey, thanks for the quick reply. It is perfect for street riding, but as I was installing I started to think about possible falls. Anyway, its plastic so not a big deal to replace. I have some tire irons and rear tube in the roll along with a hand pump. I think I will simply ensure I have somewhere I can store those things as a backup if the tube breaks along the way. Thanks for your thoughts. BTW, I'll bet that TAT was a nice ride. I'm gonna have to put one of those on my list. Just got the back a year ago and although I have not rode it much really do like the bike. It just about what I needed. Not too powerful, but as a first bike have taken me as far as I want to go faster than I choose to ride. I'm an older guy so I'm not doing 100 mph with my hair on fire. Perfect bike. Anyway, thanks for the feedback.
Thanks for the video. I am going to visit OK next week and driving on the Talimena Scenic Parkway is a part of the plan.
Be safe and have fun.
Ok, con you can not tow as most truck campers loaded max trucks payload means no hitch wieght.
That is probably the case with many truck camper setups but if you choose wisely, as I have done, you can have the truck camper and still have tow capacity. I have a 1-ton, SRW with 3900 pounds of payload capacity but only a 2,000 pound camper. All loaded up the camper is probably around 3,000 pounds which still allows me 900 pounds of payload or hitch weight. With a dually, I would have much more payload capacity which would allow for a bigger and heavier camper but still have adequate payload to tow a number of different things such as a boat, trailer with motorcycle or ATV, or a horse trailer.
@wanderbynature2508 I agree 1 ton is the way to go but most trailer hitches only allow 500 pounds of tongue weight
As I understand, the tongue weight is usually around 10% of the total weight of what is being towed. A 500 pound tongue weight would work out to a 5,000 trailer weight which would allow you to pull a pretty wide variety of toys.
I want to get out and do some of this. I need to do some more research on some areas around central Texas Austin area that has routes like this. 😊
A route in Central Texas or in the Hill Country would be awesome. Hopefully you can find one you like. Have fun out there.
You said your Honda 2000 would fit in that storage space outside of the camper. How does your Honda 2000 generator do running everything? Will it run the air conditioning no problem? Thank you so much.
Yes, I have to lean the generator over a bit but it will fit in the storage unit just to the right of the door. Yes, it runs the AC.
I'm building my boat this winter and hope to join everyone on the Snake next summer, thanks for the preview !!
Good luck with your build. Stay safe and have fun out there.

Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Great video, got a lot of useful ideas, thanks for posting. Im watching your video from Mexico. Its wonderful how youtube brings people closer.

Thanks so much for putting the time and effort into sharing this with us so we can easily enjoy the same route without 100s of hours of prep and scouting. Much appreciated!!! I can’t wait to try this with my best friend.
Glad it was helpful! Enjoy your ride!
@@wanderbynature2508thanks. I subscribed to your channel. Hope to see more moto videos in the future. For now I’ll catch up on the ones you have
Me and a couple buddies are going make the ride next weekend. Thanks again!
Sweet. Add a comment on how it goes.
Good video, but you forgot about the most popular alternative to a truck camper, which has most of the advantages of a truck camper, is much cheaper than a 1 ton pickup and a truck camper and has several advantages, a 4x4 adventure van camper. You also indicate a truck camper has no drive train to maintain. Not true. It has a very expensive truck drive traine to maintain.
Thanks for watching and commenting. You're right, a camper van is a good alternative to a truck camper but within the context of this video, I would say it has some similarities to a motorhome also which has the main disadvantage of once it is all set up you are left without transportation or having to break everything down to run into town for groceries. As for the drivetrain for a truck camper, the camper itself does not have a drivetrain (as don't travel trailers or 5th wheelers) and since many truck camper owners drive a truck already, my point was that they don't have an "extra" driveline to maintain as they would with a motorhome or camper van that doesn't serve as primary transportation. To be honest, the "extra" drivetrain to maintain is a small issue in my opinion but something to consider, especially if you don't live close to a facility that can service a big motorhome.
As a late-in-life-new kayaker, I am just beginning to discover the joys of being on the water. This video is a treasure. Great production value without being ‘slick.’ It’s informative and engaging. A delight to watch.
Thanks for watching and for the kind words. It's always nice to get positive feedback. Have fun out there on the water.
Looking at planning my first backpacking trip and had my eyes on the Sam Houston National Forest and found your video. This looks like the perfect starter loop. Thanks!
Thanks for watching. This is definitely a great starter trip. I would recommend going when the weather is cooler though. Also, note that November and December are hunting season. For that reason, I usually plan a trip here between the months of January through April.
Great video all around!
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it!
This looks sick! Thank you for sharing. I’ve been looking for a trail that’s close to Austin. Will definitely try this with my friend soon.
Have fun!
Hitting Austin tomorrow! Want to link up and make this run? I trailer up from FL
Would love to join but have to work this week and already have plans this weekend. Anyway, enjoy and stay safe!
I had no idea this was North of Houston, I just finished gathering all my camp/backpacking gear. So now comes the planning, thanks for this video!
Glad you enjoyed the video. I would suggest that you plan a trip for January through March or April. Too hot and too many bugs and snakes in the summer and hunting season starts in the fall (I prefer not to be backpacking through the woods during hunting season).
Really great video with awesome details, thank you for sharing. I will definitely add that area to my list of places to visit when I travel through Texas from Wisconsin.
Glad you enjoyed it. Have fun on your trip!
Great video! I will do the same. Thanks for posting! 👍
We usually remove our mirrors, as they get in the way or get knocked off, right?
Not a bad idea. Especially on tighter trails.

Great trip video! What kind of drone do you use? And what kind of camera?
Camera is a GoPro Hero 8 Black and the drone is a DJI Mavic Air 2.
I'll have to add this one to the list. Thanks for sharing.
Enjoy when you get out there.
the word boys should have to never be added to the word wrestling. it's been all male for centuries. this DEI crap is for the birds and was created by insane democrats
From 60 three, up to THE recreation just below the reservoir, by how far is that?
I would say roughly 10 miles to the dam and around 15 miles to the Spillway Channel Rec Area.
Great ride. Thanks for putting all this together and sharing with us.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Well I’m impressed!
Thank you
Well done documentation. I appreciate the tracks. I hope to get over that way and check it out before the heat sets in.
Yep, now is the time to do this. Enjoy.
Good job
Thank you
Wander, quick question. Does your front fender bag bounce around a lot when on trails? I have the Nelson Rigg bag with a tube and two tire irons. Kinda tight since the bag is a bit smaller than the Tusk. Just curious about bouncing fender. Would not want to break the fender with the wright.
I do get some bounce but not much and not enough to damage the fender. However, it does block most of the light from my headlight when I use the high beam. I was riding down a dark, poorly maintained road one night and took the tool bag off of the fender to I could use my high beam. I plan to add some driving lights to get around this in the future.
Great video. I'm headed outside to do mine now. The tool just arrived.
Have fun!
I just ran across this. Great content. Your route overlaps part of the East Texas 450. I'm off next week. I may come down from Dallas and ride it. I'm on a black T7 with an amber lightbar if you see me out there lol.
This would be a good time of year for a ride. If you make it down, have fun. I'll look for you if I get out there.
Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to put this all together. I'm in the hill country now, but I'm from East Texas. Maybe I'll get to give this a go some time when I'm back home visiting.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Perhaps it will give you another reason to visit home soon.
Great trip! Did a couple days last last year too, had a lot of fun. Too bad the main river in my little country is pretty much dead. Two days we were fishing all the time and speaking with every other fisherman we met, both them and us got nothing at all :D Would love to do a kayak trip in the states someday
Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, we do have it pretty good here in the US for fishing. What country are you from?
That was a really great video and very nice editing
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it.
This is probably my favorite kayaking/camping video. No crazy poppy intro, no fancy equipment, just basics.
Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Do you have a GPX track for this? Live in Conroe area and looking for some new routes to explore.
Check the video I made on what I am calling ETBAR (East Texas Backroad Adventure Route). I have a GPS trac, Google Map, and a link to a spreadsheet with turn by turn directions including GPS coordinates and mileage. Enjoy!
I’ll definitely be riding some of the routes that you’ve shown on here.
Sounds good. Be safe and have fun.
I live down around Beaumont. I always camp at Caney creek and Bouton lake.
While I was discovering the area and mapping out the ride I call ETBAR (East Texas Backroad Adventure Ride), I camped one night at Bouton Lake. Cool place. I had it all to myself. I also made a video and provided maps and a GPS trac for the ETBAR if you want to check it out.
Was there any cell phone service throughout the route in the woods or no?
There is cell service but it is spotty.
Enjoyed your video, thank you. Do you think that your route could be done in a full-size overland rig? I’m from southwest Louisiana and there isn’t much here to run.
You can absolutely do all of this in a full-size rig except for one obstacle which is on FS 333E. To bypass this, in the spreadsheet I provided, on row 87, instead of turning right on 352A/FS 333, turn left and go to 306 and turn right on 306 which will take you to 54 which basically puts you on row 90 of the spreadsheet. This only cuts out about 6-7 miles. I hope that helps. Enjoy yourself out there.
@@wanderbynature2508 Thank you sir, we will try it soon.
Damn good video. Planning on going soon. What month did you go?
Glad you like the video. I went in January. January and February have lots of days in this part of Texas with low's in the 40's and high's in the 60's which is perfect for backpacking. Have fun on your trip.

Hey man, I've been wanting to paddle the Sabine for a while now and finally have plans to go in a couple weeks. This video has been super helpful and the trip looks awesome, so thanks!
