Forge $10 Harbor Freight Hammer Into "Battle Axe" With 5 Ton Electric Forging Press Viking Fantasy
Hello Everyone! In this video I forge a Harbor Freight Ball Peen Hammer into a Viking Battle Axe.
I use my 5 ton Electric Forging press that I made with a log splitter, to forge most the material. Then I switch to the anvil to finish the shape as much as possible. I use an angle grinder and files to finalize the profile.
I torch the original handle black and wrap black leather around the handle.
If you have any questions please leave a comment and ill get back to you.
Thank you so much for watching I really appreciate it.

Viking Hammer "Etch Drawing On Metal" Use Lineman's Straight Peen Hammer for Blacksmithing & Forging
มุมมอง 1.3K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hello Everyone! In this video I explain how I etch drawing on metal. I etch a Celtic Viking style design on an old Bell System Lineman's hammer. I got the hammer from a thrift store for $3. I figure this will be a good budget straight peen hammer for blacksmithing or knife making. I can never find a straight peen hammer at Harbor Freight. All I ever find is cross peen or ball peen hammers. This...

Where did you get the Viking art?
Google. I just googled Viking clip art and looked at the Google Images. I think I typed Viking Warrior Clip Art.
Nice but why first heat treatment and then the belt sander youre gonna take the temper off if you overheat it whitch is very propable considering the size of this
Thank you. I set the grinder to a very low speed, and I used my bare hands to feel the heat. As long as you don't grind it too hot it'll be ok. I just take it real slow. It does heat up quick but it cools down quick too. And it is so small that any little grind makes a big difference. It's really easy to over grind and ruin it. But if heat treat before I grind the bevels, it's so thin it'll warp like crazy. even in the vice it'll twist warp.
When fully extended can the hydraulic piston touch the ceiling of the press? How did you determine how high to make the roof of the press? If you fully extended the press could it knock the top off?
Without the dies in the press, the carriage can hit the top. There is not enough power to break the frame. I went overboard on the frame so I could upgrade to a larger log splitter later if want. I made sure there was at least 4 in of clearance between the dies.
Well done
Thank you.
Amazing work, my friend. Thanks for the video, helps me learn more about etching.
Thats awesome! Im really glad you liked it. Thank you.
Your work is fantastic! I'm still learning. I've done a couple axes but only using the 9v batteries. After us blacken the blade, what do you buff the metal with? sandpaper? if so what grit or just a buffing pad?
After you blacken the background, I avoid using sandpaper on the background at least. I might try to touch up the foreground with I high grit paper wrapped around something with hard back so you don't sand the background. But you can use a buffing wheel.
@@drewdoesart9277 Okay, thank you so much for the info.
Nice. Is it necessary to use the k wool with the refractory cement or can you just get away with using the refractory cement. Does the k wool help retain the heat more with the cement. Looking at building one like this. Just not crazy about the k wool. Just looking for any opinions on the subject. Thanks!
The K wool is some nasty stuff to breathe in or even touch. So I understand why you're not crazy about it. But the K wool is what's doing most of the work. The Refractory cement helps keep the K wool protected. If you touch the wool with hot metal, it'll stick to it like cotton candy. As long as you cover the k Wool completely with the refractory cement you won't have any problems with the ceramic K wool. Just make sure to where gloves and a respirator while handling the K wool. I made sure there was at least an inch of cement covering the K wool.
@ Thanks for the response and advice. Again nice set up with the forge!
Awesome !!!!
the skeleton edit was awesome. nice work tho im going to make a press soon
😂 lol thank you. I really appreciate it.
I watched the whole thing 💪. Good work bud, you did a good job. Side note your video editing skills rock ! I wish mine were that good.
Thank you. I really appreciate it.
Great work Drew. Appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
Totally awesome thank you for sharing
Did you build your press? Do you have videos about it?
Yes. I did, and I here is a link to the full build. th-cam.com/video/DpLwhf29SC4/w-d-xo.html
waw!🤩
OUTSTANDING!
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Pathetic
You got patience, that’s for sure!
Gorgeous!
Thank you.
Really liked the forged to shape and not just a lot of grinding after flattened out. Great Job.
Thank you. I really appreciate it.
That is not a Nordic axe.
I updated the title and thumbnail. Good call. Not sure what I was thinking 🤔 thank you.
I really liked the video. If I was making this axe I would have added a high carbon bit to ensure the axe was "useful". I'm not 100% sure what steel those harbor freight hammers actually is but I'm pretty certain it's nothing better than low/medium carbon. Really good project though and I think its inspired me to do one myself.
Usually hammer faces need to be heat treated medium/high carbon for wear resistance. Otherwise they'd just deform along with whatever you're hitting them on.
Thank you. I really appreciate it. It says it’s an alloy steel with a tempered striking face. After I did the quench, I tested it with a file and was able to get it to skate on the file. So I’m pretty sure there’s at least some carbon in it.
Its not all in the carbon content. They quench at a slightly lower temp to allow for some deformation before it chips. Least thats how they did it when they wanted their product to last because deformations can be filed or ground down and the hammer can be used still. When it chips its a bullet and makes it hard to keep using the hammer.
That’s a damn good job spreading that out!
Thank you. I really appreciate it.
Looks great!!!!
Thanks!!
damn this guy can swing tools really fast
😂 lol.
Excellent work
Thank you.
Really nice work!
GOT!!
Yeah 👍
So Cool!
Thank you

Very nice
This is the best one so far
Awesome work!
I want to make one!
Love the forge scale with the burnt black handle and the black leather wrap..looks amazing and I bet it's comfortable in the hand.
So Cool 😎!!!!!!
Would also make an awesome Zombie apocalypse weapon. Love how you kept it simplistic yet awesome at the same time.
I love the black on black..looks so good and the shape of the axe head is gorgeous 😍!!
Thank you! I really appreciate it.
That looks great, just a little surprised you didn't drift the eye out at al.l
Thank you. I didn’t mess with the eye because I wanted to reuse the original handle.
Wow brother awesome piece! Amazing job
Thanks. I appreciate it 🙏
That's so cool 😎
Thank you. 😊
Very well done
Thank you very much!

Another awesome video man! Love it. What size ballpeen is that?
Disregard… just saw the title before the video played 😂
Lol it ok
Awesome!
Thank you
Best one by far
Is the handle on backwards?
No. I put back on the same way it came off. I just exaggerated the curves .
Great video mate im looking at biulding a log splitter press my self and your video will be a big help thanks .😎👍
Heck, yeah that’s awesome!
Looks good... Just 1 suggestion. Don't keep dipping the q tip into the bluing bottle. The impurities will eventually make the bluing useless. You'll have to buy a new bottle more often. Best idea is to pour some into the top, and dip the q tip in that. Then just pour it out, rinse and dry.
That’s a good idea. Never really thought of that. I’ll have to try that.
@drewdoesart9277 No problem. I'm a gunsmith, and it's one of the first things we're told when we start learning about restoration.
