Today, in both my 6th-grade and 7th-grade ELA classes, the students participated in Investigation Trails as an interactive and challenging way to check their comprehension of the first two chapters of "Boy: Tales of Childhood" by Roald Dahl (6th) and the first chapter of "Red Scarf Girl" by Ji Li Jiang (7th). Today, in ELA 6 & ELA 7, students reviewed Point of View in literature, specifically First Person, Second Person, and Third Person. Students faced each other to see who could correctly guess what type of narrator each passage had. Groups chose their team names, too. This review game reinforced the information that was covered in class the day before.

Today was the 3rd annual Shark Tank event where my 6th grade students presented their products or services to the table of investors. ✨

After reading "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum, my students put Dorothy on trial for the murders of the Wicked Witch of the East and the Wicked Witch of the West. Once again, my students knocked it out of the park!

For this project-based learning activity, groups chose a language arts topic and created games to help their classmates learn and review. They were responsible for creating the following: An ELA skill Cheat Sheet, to teach the skill to their classmates so they could practice it by playing their game; Student Directions for their game; a Game Board and Game Pieces; and an Answer Key. The games r...

After learning about prepositions, their job, and the three types, my students played a game of "Steps & Slides" to practice their newly acquired knowledge. Students rolled a Google dice and used the gameboard key to tell them what type of preposition to find on the board, all while trying to avoid falling down the slides! Learning grammar CAN be fun and engaging!

My students worked for several days on fun pool-themed grammar activities with their small groups. They paired up swim buddies, tossed water balloons, and took a popsicle break before they played some pool noodle tic-tac-toe. All of these games helped them reinforce the new information about the 8 parts of speech that they just learned.

Today as a fun way to review vocabulary words for the following day's quiz, my students played Headbands! The person wearing the headband and vocabulary card was to try and guess the word as their group members described the word for them. Everyone had a turn and we were sure to sanitize the headbands in between players. By the looks of it, this will be a game that we will play again!

Our first grammar unit of the 2023-2024 school year was Conjunctions.
