WIRL - Garden Railway
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 23 พ.ค. 2022
Short videos about my garden railway - G45 and a mix of live steam and Battery RC. The back story is still developing about a small standard gauge light railway serving small industries, agriculture and towns in the Chilterns valley tributary to the Thames.
Still early days, some track is laid, some trains are running, but no supporting infrastructure (stations etc) are in place (2022).
Rule 1 applies - its my railway - I can run it how I want.! Which translates to "How the grandchildren decide...."
Rule 2 - The right of way (RoW) is my choice - Which translates as "Where SWMBO says it can go!"
More seriously - its mainly LGB track laid on a FILCRIS framework at about ground level with a ruling gradient of a maximum of 1:60 and generally R3 and R2 curves. A few R1 points in the terminus area.

WIRL Snowplough trials Jan 2025
Grandson Jordan has wanted a snowplough for quite a while. So the WIRL PWD team downloaded some files, fired up the 3D printer and assembled the WIRL SP001. The files came from :trainmodeller" on Thingiverse. See www.thingiverse.com/thing:6365730.
Unfortunately, the snow has come and gone before the assembly was finished; however a quick acceptance trial showed it would push leaves off the track and it didn't stumble over anything.

WIRL 15 September 2024 Acceptance Trials SWIFT 16 trucks
มุมมอง 704 หลายเดือนก่อน
WIRL conducts acceptance trials on two kit built Swift Sixteen wagons. The video shows the trials rather than the construction. But the kits were super easy to build and paint. I added some lead flashing as additional weight and substituted LGB metal wheels; having turned off a portion of the wheel hub on the lathe to ensure the axles fitted the available space and ran smoothly. The trials were...
WIRL 9 July 2024 PWD monster trimmer
มุมมอง 1.8K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Many of you will have seen the Weed slasher built by Melbournesparks - see his video at th-cam.com/video/x36XCKYH6eM/w-d-xo.html Todays contribution from WIRL is a prototype weed slasher for the vegetation at WIRL - less vigorous than in Melbourne but still time consuming to trim by hand in spring when Forget-me-nots and Primroses invade the permanent way. The WIRL PWD monster is a 3d printed m...

After a week in the workshop putting together the start of the Points control panel video, it was time for some steam trains in the garden on a cold morning/afternoon. Billy and Caleb raised steam quickly, even though it was chilly, once the gas was persuaded to flow and stay lit. Billy proved to be having a lot of trouble negotiating the siding points in both directions. More work for the PWD ...
8 to 13 January 2024 WIRL in the Workshop - Points Control Panel - Part 1
มุมมอง 157ปีที่แล้ว
I decided it was going to be too cold for running trains in the garden last weekend, so I thought I would make a start on showing more details of what I have planned for the points control and mimic panel. I find it just too confusing to remember which switch on the LGB control boxes goes to which point, so a mimic board is essential. The challenge, of course, is that the LGB point motors use a...
WIRL 7 January 2024- Rik Bennet's Freight Manager at WIRL
มุมมอง 156ปีที่แล้ว
I downloaded the Freight Manager application from Rik Bennett's Peckforton blog, having seen his article in Garden Rail (January 2024) and also having watched numerous of his operational videos at Peckforton. It was very easy to set up and generate an initial schedule for a couple of trains, but it was too cold to run more than the initial part (pit it down to too many years living in the tropi...
WIRL 6 January 2024 some more info on the storage shed
มุมมอง 90ปีที่แล้ว
A member of the Garden Rails forum asked (gardenrails.org/forum/index.php) asked about the area of the storage shed, so here are some more details. The actual sidings were determined by the points I had to had at the time but, with hindsight, I think it would be better without the 3 way point at entrance and a more direct route to the first siding, one right had point, then 2 or 3 left points f...
WIRL 5 January 2024 Billy visits Pit Head Halt
มุมมอง 297ปีที่แล้ว
Billy goes to Pit Head Halt to try out the new station road, run round, head shunt and siding. The coldest day I have tried a live steam loco - an interesting exercise in getting the gas and oil to cooperate! However, once filled, lubricated, and lit (s)he run very well after quite a few months off. First try with the statis camera "out in the field" - sort of OK, but perhaps a side on view of ...
WIRL 4 January 2024 Inside the storage yard with Jordan
มุมมอง 138ปีที่แล้ว
Bulldog Jordan explores the sidings in the storage yard/shed. The shed has six storage sidings with LGB points and remote control. All points work well, including the pair control by one motor and an operating link (3d printed pivots) due to limited space between tracks. The 3 way point at the entrance works well, but Jordan struggles with it a bit unless the operation is completely crisp. The ...
WIRL 3 January 2024 Jordan and the Sidings
มุมมอง 1.1Kปีที่แล้ว
A quick exploration of the junctions and sidings at WIRL home yard. Bulldog Jordan has a quick run into and out of the sidings in home yard and finds a few undocumented features on some points that will exercise the PWD for a while. Signalman Fred gets his lunch delivered by the driver (Joanne) who seems to have abandoned Jordan along the line somewhere!

2nd January at WIRL - Storm Henk blowing strongly - but Tram Cyrus explores a small section of sidings and links in the WIRL terminus area. I introduce the next WIRL development project for the spring season - creation of a control panel and repeater lights for the 20 points on the PW. The control panel will replace 4 LGB control boxes. Apologies for shaky videos - I really must find the tripod...

WIRL - first train of 2024. After 3 months of no trains, a quick brush round the permanent way, some cleaning of points, and trimming of vegetation, WIRL is back in action. Now with a new station (run down "Pit Head Halt"),,a storage shed for the trucks etc., and some new sidings to explore in the next months.
First video of WIRL garden railway
มุมมอง 1692 ปีที่แล้ว
An autumn 2022 view of main section of WIRL from a camera mounted on rear of 2nd coach.
Let's hope no more snow comes along. No-one wants to deal with further train service delays.
@@kellyashfordtrains2642 our grandkids are desperate for snow - they live in Malaysia and came for a white Christmas but had to make do with scraping frost from the grass.
Hello Its not too late yet, still chance of snow, winter is far from over. A great video, good to see and hear that loco, and the snowplough is a real best of a thing, that will really clear the snow away, Excellent video
@@mrowl-the-dsm1304 i think we will run out of time as we are away for a while from next week. But the WIRL will be ready for next year😀
@@ianwm A good railway will always be prepared, and we have had snow at easter before now, so you never know
I don't know why I haven't been getting notifications for your content! This is absolutely brilliant! Fancy building one for the FeckHallBahn??
@@FeckHallBahn certainly happy to 3d print the motor and axle mounting block; and the battery block. Its all mounted on a plywood sledge that is screwed to an LGB chassis. The type of battery may change the battery block design. I use the battery from our mower and strimmer. In short - happy to have a chat how to build one for/with FHB.
I can make the hubs for the strimmer cords too.
A lovely railway that, and I do like Bulldog locos
Thank you. WIRL is developing faster than my camera skills.needs my 10 year old grandson to give me some more lessons.😂
How about a spinning wire wheel like a bottle brush flicking most pcs off the track mounted up front... Thanks for the morning coffee...
@@caseyvillemodelrailroad3877 I think there is a danger that a spinning brush (wire or otherwise) would reset/half-set the points as the train approaches resulting in derailments. That's why I think a blower may work better.
I promised a parts list - so here it is: Wallingford Industrial Rail Ltd. Weed Slashing Monster (WSM) parts-list. 1. Motor of your choice - I used a 24v scooter motor I had bought for another project (converting AC mini lathe to DC). 2. Pillow bearing blocks - 2 off - 8 mm (www.4bearings.co.uk/) 3. Bevel gears - one pair - 1:1 Bevel Gear 1 modulus 20 8mm shaft (eBay seller => worldwidelectro) 4. 8mm silver steel axle - (source: gwr-fasteners - www.gwr-fasteners.co.uk/) 5. 3D printed mounting block for motor and bearings to suit motor and bearings. 6. 3D printed battery housing to suit chosen battery 7. Assorted switches, fuse, and wiring to suit your selected control system. I am planning an upgrade to radio control at some point - to save having to bend down to switch the beast on. Or more importantly, off when the strimmer wire is whirling close to the switch! 8. 12mm plywood (base to mount 3D printed mounting and housing) to be used as a skid that can be bolted/screwed to flat-bed truck. Items 1-4 purchased through eBay, various sellers (other suppliers are available). I am happy to share the Sketchup and/or stl files if anyone wants to make or modify the WIRL-WSM in exchange for suitable acknowledgement to Melbournesparks, for the inspiration) and WIRL for the files.
I got a silly question... 1:08 - those lovely bevel gears - where did you get them from? I have a few projects (train and other) that could really use those! 😊❤ EDIT: definitely interested in a parts list if possible, and thankyou for a lovely video 🙂
@@LordPhobos6502 hi. The parts are from evil bay - I’ll get a full list up later in the day, but the gears are eBay # 394207424009. There are other suppliers too. I am impressed with the bevel gears - mesh nicely.
Should get your wife to pull the weeds.
For inside the rails you could just use a big spinny brush thing.
I was thinking along those lines, but worry about how it would deal with the points, i.e would it throw the point as the train approaches etc? Hence the idea of a blower which would not catch the point. Some experiments to come I guess.😅
How about those things to clean glasses with at the pub. You can cut one to size for the tracks.
@@a41wilde57a possibility indeed.
@@ianwm Get a little turbojet and make one of those jet snowblower things 😆
@@Dudeface167 not sure about a turbojet - may be a bot warm for the LGB sleepers. I am looking at a bilge ventilation fan - 24 volts and about diameter of 4inches (in old money). The directional snow blower is an idea.
"Oh, oh, oh," said the trucks. "We want a proper engine, not a Red Monster." Recognise this phrase and storyline? Which Season 1 Thomas the Tank Engine story does it come from?
Not sure the TV episode, but it's from the RWS book "James the Red Engine" and the story is "Troublesome Trucks".
@@drewzero1 The TV episode is Troublesome Trucks, same as the RWS story.
What a cute little pair of tank engines. I love them, and would like to see them double-heading a passenger train if it's possible. Thanks for making me, a lady who loves steam engines, grin cheerfully. I wasn't sure I wanted to watch this at first, but then I did a double take and realised there were steamies up and at 'em. Right up my alley. What do their whistles sound like?
Hi Kelly. - welcome to WIRL. No whistles on these beasts (yet?) but I have been looking into making a test piece to add a voice.
This is my kind of scene, although I don't have room for a garden railway myself. Hope you get more subscribers.
It’s not just the FeckHallBahn that has warts then! Phew!!!
Too many I am afraid. Still it makes the whole enterprise interesting. I think these two points (eBay really good prices????) are possibly a little out of gauge and also the frog on at least one has been wheel bashed a lot! I haven’t modified the guard rails yet as I wanted to see if I can get some boiler band at the Midlands Garden Rail show in a month or so. Failing that some brass sheet to cut into strips. These points are also one reason I have been paying attention to your sleeper replacements over the past few videos.😊
😕 *promosm*
Nice video, Like ! ! !
Thank you. I hope you enjoy the other videos and new ones still to come!
Excellent, and great fun. My Bulldog is off to Fosworks for sound fitting next week.
I use Micron RC and myLocosound cards, which I fitted myself. It’s a bit of a fiddle. I fitted batteries,RC and sound to the trams (Cyrus and Caleb) - Cyrus works fine😅but I haven’t quite got Caleb right😢. As you say - great fun🎉
@@ianwm I’m not going to attempt to do the sound on the Bulldog - I’ve made a pig’s ear of fitting the Fosworks RC!! I’ve made Steve promise not to laugh at my wiring…
@@FeckHallBahn yes - I am trying to decide whether to have another go at Caleb or to send it to Micron. Reluctant to send as laughter from their side could be deafening🙄
Quite a lovely railway! Shame the camera coach obscured the view somewhat. Looking forward to part 2!
Hi Thanks for your comments - the next instalment has been delayed by various things - not least a hip replacement in January. However, some new engines, trucks and tracks are now operational. A new video should appear soon. Cheers Ian M😄
