    I'm okay with this reveal but I'll be more excited when Nintendo shows us some new games. Two things I want from the Switch 2 is more horsepower for better framerate and backwards compatibility so I can play my Switch 1 games - it looks like they will deliver here. Another thing I want but knew they wouldn't do is a non-handheld version of the console. I know I'm in the minority here but I only play in docked mode - holding the Switch hurts my hands and I want to see my games on a big screen. Also Ryan, I am quite sure we are seeing Mario Kart 9 in the brief clip in the reveal. I'm sure I will get one at some point, I can't resist Nintendo games!

    Love this movie. As much as I do enjoy Macchio and Zabka, it's Pat Morita who makes the movie for me. His Miyagi is such an interesting and subtly hilarious character. One of his best lines is in Part 2. Daniel sees a sign with a martial artist karate chopping a log in half and says to Mr. Miyagi "Can you break a log like that?" Miyagi replies "Don't know, never been attacked by tree". Morita was irreplaceable! Derrick, I too would have loved to see a Miyagi origin story! Also, I once bought a bonsai tree. I had always thought the were cool and one day I saw a Van marked with "Bansai Trees" on its vinyl wrap. It was parked just off of a busy intersection - Ryan, you know the town. This was definitely out of place in my town; I had to check it out. An Asian man was selling all kinds of bansai trees out of the van. As I was looking at one of the smaller trees, he comes up to me and says with what was probably an exaggerated accent "Bansai is VE-RY lucky tree!" As I was handing this dude my $20, a car ran a red light and crashed into another car a mere 15 feet away from me! Lucky tree indeed!...it died a week later.

    I think my favorite movie of 2024 is Godzilla Minus One - This was by far the BEST Godzilla movie I have seen. This movie avoids the "misunderstood monster/humans are the real villian" tropes that you come to expect in these kinds of movies. Instead, the film focuses on how to defeat a seemingly unstoppable threat, all while presenting a simple story about a couple that you end up actually caring about. Godzilla and his destruction looks incredible! The movie is so good you won't care that it's dubbed. Netflix also released a black and white version that I am looking forward to watching! If you haven't seen this movie yet, do yourself a favor and watch it. My honorable mention goes to The Fall Guy which feels like a throwback to when movies were fun! Happy New Year guys! I'm looking forward to more great episodes!

    I really need to rewatch Gremlins, I haven't seen it in probably a decade plus. This was a favorite of mine growing up. I loved Gizmo and remember having Gremlins books and even a couple action figures. One day back when I was 5 or 6 I lost my Stripe action figure! I searched for days until I finally found him hidden in the grass in our yard. Tragically, the figure had become the victim of our lawn mower and my Gizmo no longer had a villian to fight 😂. Ryan, I am glad you touched on the use of "Do you hear what I hear?" in this movie as the use of that song was always something that stood out to me. Used in this film, it was haunting. Looking back as an adult, I'm a bit surprised that the movie was marketed so heavily toward kids but, hey, it was the 80s...

    I recently played through MGS1 based on your podcast recommendation. I picked up the collection on Switch. I gotta say, there was a bit of a learning curve for me with this game. It took me a while, along with many, many deaths, to figure out exactly how this game wanted me to play it. I'm sure it took me an hour or two just to get through the first area. Once I realized that guards didn't possess the A.I. that I'm used to in more modern games; they moved on rails and could only see about ten feet in front of them, things began to go more smoothly for me. I did appreciate the visual variety that the isometric perspective used in this game offers but it also made things very difficult at times. Trying to aim and shoot at enemies that are off-screen was frustrating (example: boss fight with Ocelot). Maybe I just stink at this game but I found myself longing for the over the shoulder, 3rd person perspective of Splinter Cell. That would have been a helpful alternative to the "First-person, but cannot move" option MGS1 offers. That being said, I loved the use of music and the cinematics in the game. The way the opening credits run as you start playing is a really cool touch. There was some really inventive ideas in this game as well like holding a rumbling controller to your arm to feel medicine being released into your body - WOW! Though I am terrible at button mashing, I really like that there was an option to give up rather than keep enduring the pain. It took me many tries but I finally double tapped A fast enough to save Meryl. Had I realized that giving up would allow me to still continue the game, I would have let that chick die 😂. I would pretend that Snake ended up with Mei Ling. He could lead the sled dogs while she shares with him her favorite Chinese proverbs. I liked the variety of boss fights as well. I might have picked Sniper Wolf part 2 as my favorite but I just found the aiming to be too juttery, even with diazapam between every shot. I think I enjoyed the helicopter battle with liquid the most. Rappelling down the building and then using the missile launcher was loads of fun. Fighting Metal Gear was frustrating but the jeep chase and fist fight at the end were pretty great as well. Overall, I found MGS1 to be a very good game and I'm glad I played it. Thanks for the recommendation guys. I will have to play 2 and 3 at some point, I'm finishing Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom at the moment!

    • @ThisPodcastTakesTokens
      @ThisPodcastTakesTokens 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow, well I'm glad you enjoyed it. The subsequent episodes evolve the controls and gameplay. I thought about this as I replayed the game, how it would feel to play this for the first time, now, as a modern gamer. This game came out in 1998 and many of the "standards" of modern FPS and tactical games hadn't been perfected or even invented yet. I imagine it was quite the fall backwards to unlearn everything. I finished this out after the podcast, and I have to agree, the roof top fight with the helicopter may be my favorite, after Psycho Mantis. The key to shooting in this game it not aiming, let the auto aim do the work. You have to learn how to let the enemy fall into your sights with the small pew-pew. The pew-booms are a little more nuanced. Thank you for the follow up, I'm going to paraphrase you when I read it on the podcast 😉

      We loved the movie and express that throughout the episode. What my brother was expressing in this short clip from the full episode, is the vibe Tim Burton movies give off and how it can wear thin over time. Ultimately , like all good things, it comes back around again. I find it funny to read someone's instant arm chair reaction to something that is so obviously tongue-in-cheek. Especially when they criticize someone for expressing an opinion, one that they themselves only have the balls to express from behind a fake and/or empty account. Commenting negatively on a public post you stumbled across while doom scrolling is the very definition of unsolicited advice; no one forced you to watch or to chose negativity in a comment.

      BTTF is an incredible movie. I loved all 3 films as a kid, with part 2 being my favorite back then because of all the future stuff. Now, the original film is my favorite followed by 3 and then 2. Little flaws aside, I think it's a perfect story. Derick, I can't believe you don't love Crispin Glover's performance, I have had the opposite experience. The more I have watched the movie, the more I have loved his George McFly! Really, every character is so perfectly cast and Great Scott, do they all turn in fantastic, slightly exaggerated, performances. I think it all works here and adds to the fun and excitement of the story. If I could change one thing about the movie, it would probably be the fading family photo. Every time I see that I kinda roll my eyes. On the other hand, it would have been funny if they had cut back to 1985 to see Marty's siblings reacting to their bodies being partly erased! 😂 I love the cinematography in this movie with my absolute favorite shot in the film being when Marty's eyes widen as he looks over Biff's shoulder after tripping him; that's just visual gold!! This has got to be in my top 10 favorite movies of all time! Also, I agree that there does not need to be a sequel or remake of BTTF. Leave this wonderful trilogy alone!

    This first movie still holds up pretty well today. It's a pretty faithful adaptation of the turtles, borrowing from both the cartoon as well as Eastman and Laird's comics. As a kid I loved the movie for the corny jokes like Mikey with the turtle wax and "Wheel of fortune dudes!" and as an adult I really love the scenes at the farmhouse. April drawing Leo, Don and Casey working on the truck, Leo watching over a wounded Raph in the tub; these are some great visuals that really showcase the turtles as a family unit. It also helps ground the film in reality; as much as a movie about ninjitsu-practicing reptiles can be grounded that is. Michelangelo remains my favorite, while Leonardo is probably the turtle I most relate to. That's what's great about the turtles. They all had unique personalities and everyone has their favorite. SMB3 is the first video game that I owned. We got an NES as a Christmas gift from my grandma back when Nintendo was bundling the console with this game. I played the daylights out of this game and could beat the game with ease with warp whistles and, with much more work, without the whistles. In more recent years, I could still beat the game with whistles but my skills have weakened significantly from when I was a kid playing it every day. The game was bursting with creativity in each and every level from flying raccoons to Goomba Shoes to a demonic sun that demands you run with reckless abandon. I may be biased by nostalgia but I think this is best mario game ever made. It's classic NES firing on all cylinders!

    I saw this for the first time at the drive in. Born in ‘75. So 6. There was a first movie for kids. Second for adults. So we were supposed to sleep in the folded down back of the car. Don’t remember what the first movie was. I watched. This was pretty scary for a 6 y/o. One of my favorites since. Made myself a whip out of some scrap leather. This was pre-VCR (for me) so this stuck with me, for years I pretend to be Indy. Never picked apart the beginning scene. It’s a movie it’s doesn’t matter. I was always incredibly annoyed that my whip wouldn’t catch so I could swing on it. That, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out. I will say that temple of doom was definitely my favorite. Realistically raiders is the best. But temple of doom is the campy-est. Bringing Marion back/ no. Indy is a ladies man. I could have done without her ever coming back. I find her more dislikable than what’s her name from temple of doom. Everything after last crusade I could live without.

It was on Sundays on PBS (maybe it was Saturday). It wasn’t always that, movies too I believe. But when it was the old Flash Gordon like serials I was happy. With the awful(y great) giant trash can like robot bad guys on the hidden island where the bad guy kidnapped the girl. Do you know why arcades used tokens instead of just straight quarters. I feel like the over all arc needs something like that to keep it anchored to its core. As far as arcades using tokens, it depends; some places had a token system, but most used coins. However, most of the things we loved growing up(arcades, theatres, jukeboxes, ect) relied on some kind of payment registration system, be it quarters, tickets, cards or, yes, tokens.

However, I rewatched the film a few years back, and there were too many cringe-inducing moments.
