    What is your driving speed?

    • @aegismotoadventures1616
      @aegismotoadventures1616 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's an interesting question. Generally speaking, the speed limits are slightly lower in Canada than in the US for a given designed road. And the speed limit signs are in kilometers per hour and not miles per hour. This conversion was easy for the KTM's because you can change the settings in the digital display. Mighty Quinn, Honda CRF 300 Rally, is not so easy to toggle between KPH and MPH. Also, the Honda is most comfortable at about 62 MPH at the high end of speed. Therefore, we tended to be right at the posted speed limit. We got passed by the locals all the time. One could go faster than we did, but keep this in mind. If you're on vacation, what's the hurry. Two, if you crash, you are a long, long way away from help. When you are on a motorcycle in remote places, you should operate like your life depends on safe and good choices. The Trans-Labrador Highway is scenic and easier than ever to visit, but caution rules the day. Take care, Mike

Ramp is small and hard to load from. Noisey and required diagnosis & addressing. No spare tire carrier and optional add-ons are mounted in the way of loading /tie down Tires are China bombs - had a major blowout Fenders are welded and non-removable - blowout bent the fender.

    Why not just cut through the chain with the angle grinder?

    • @aegismotoadventures1616
      @aegismotoadventures1616 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Ninke, I suppose one could do that, but it is, in my humble opinion, safer to just grind the pins. Let me explain. Cutting the link at a right angle risks tool kick or a blade breaking. Tool kick could cause one to grind something you didn't want to grind, and a grinding disk fragment flying at high speed is also bad. Grinding the pins off is easy and easy to control the grinder. This boils down to personal preference somewhat as well. Grind the least amount needed to complete the task, and firmly maintain control of the tool. Did I mention that grinders are notoriously dangerous. Take care, Mike

    Goose Bay was an uninhabited wilderness when construction commenced in September 1941. Within a span of two years, it transformed into the largest airfield in the Western Hemisphere under Canadian jurisdiction. The Americans vacated the base in the 1970s, leaving it as a modest Canadian base. Regarding its name, it is said that during its construction, the Americans referred to it as Happy Valley due to the observed contentment of those relocating there. It's one of the best places to live if you love the outdoors!

      The load limit was listed in the manual under specifications. The load limit is listed as 353 lbs. total. This means the total of rider, passenger, accessories, and gear. I believe the XT250 could handle more, but that would require heavier fork and shock springs. It is lightly sprung to begin with. Anything much heavier than 380 lbs. would not be wise. If one needs more capacity, then a larger motorcycle designed for your load requirements is in order. I hope this helps. Take care, Mike

    On my 2021 RT-L I average 37-41 mpg. I never use eco mode as recommended by Cam-Am master mechanic and TH-camr Shawn Smoakes. As a rule I “short shift” up shifting in the 27-2900 rpm range. I am rarely doing interstate driving focusing on state, county and local roads where top speeds are in the 60-65 mph range so this I’m sure is a contributing factor to the higher mpg. Enjoying the ride, I’m my opinion, is hard to do when you’re driving 80 in multiple lanes of traffic.

    • @aegismotoadventures1616
      @aegismotoadventures1616 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Michael, Good information. I agreed with the short shifting. As soon as I figured out short shifting dramatically increased mpg, I implemented that tactic thereafter. There's no doubt that lower speeds and just a single rider without gear will create better mileage. Thanks so much for sharing your success and the potential of the Spyder RT. Take care, Mike

    I own a 2021 & a 22 RT Limiteds. I don’t know what the gas tank physically looks like but filling the fuel tank fully is a tedious process. With a standard trip to the gas station, filling is practically impossible. I’m able to fill the tank beyond what I can achieve at the station at home by another gallon and a half easy from a gas can. Trying to make sense out of economy and distance to empty is pretty much futile since purchasing these two bikes.i never drive them in ECO mode and speeds on the Interstate can be as high as 85mph to stay with traffic. These high speeds sure make the Spyder awful thirsty. 🤣

      Hey starfish100, I'm glad you stopped by, and thanks for the input. I'm not sure why you're having trouble at the pump, but the automatic shut-off sometimes provides some grief. As for the sport mode, it costs a little extra, but it sure is fun. Take care, Mike

      @@aegismotoadventures1616 The fuel pumps in my area at the gas stations have a spring loaded filler neck vapor seal upon them. If you fully insert the filler into the neck of the gas tank spring loaded vapor seal is compressed allowing the fuel to flow until the gas pump gets shut off as it rises and contacts the filler end. I have to barely set the nozzle into the filler neck and hold back the “fore skin” on the base of the nozzle to get it to fill. Even in the best circumstances the gas can only trickle in slowly. I can fill the tank up until two inches from the top but that still isn’t full. The tank will take another gallon and a half or so if I dribble the gas in very slowly. The distance to empty mileage reading is all over the place and seldom reflects what the actual level is. This problem is active on both model years I own and is rather frustrating for such a simple thing as a fill up. When I fill the tank completely and ride the Spyder the DTE may start off at 208 but will actually begin to climb higher the more miles I ride. At times I have been able to get a reading of 252 miles to empty. When checking the instrument cluster fuel economy it is often under 29mpg. In my experience the whole economy, distance to empty and fuel level readings are all a scientific wild ass guess that really aren’t accurate and to refill at another station to the same fuel fill point I started with is difficult to achieve which makes manual calculations inaccurate. I gave up on trying to find a better way and start looking for a gas station after 175 miles. I’m just curious if you have the same experience with filling up your gas tank too?

    • @aegismotoadventures1616
      @aegismotoadventures1616 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I see what you're saying. But no, I haven't had that issue. I'm with you on the calculations the display reads out. It seems so arbitrary that I don't trust it. I'm old school. Just give me an accurate fuel level Guage and a warning light when I hit the reserve level. We are currently using a safe range we calculate manually. Simply set the tripometer to zero at every fill-up. It makes route planning fairly easy. On some of our out of the way trips, we carry extra fuel. The extra fuel has saved us several times. The Spyder is a whole different beast than our bikes, though.

      Hi Dean, I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion. You are welcome to articulate and explain your reasoning in the comments if you like. As for me, I like to justify my stance and opinion. I believe the Spyder RT is overpriced for what you are getting. The higher cost eliminates many potential customers. It would be prudent if CanAm lowered their price some. Likewise, the fuel efficiency should be tweeked some to increase MPG by 3 to 4 miles more per gallon. From an engineering standpoint, I believe it's achievable. With that said, my experience so far has been positive. The Spyder RT is easy and fun to operate and ride. The machine is not perfect, but calling it junk seems a little harsh. I acknowledge that you may have had a bad experience. If so, please share what happened to sway your opinion to such a negative comment. Take care, Mike

Fortunately for us, our local dealer allowed us to take a short test ride. Both Cheri and I were able to take a similar machine for a spin. The salesperson gave us detailed instructions on its operation prior to the test ride. We had no problem at all. Please name the dealer that let you down. I'm sure CanAm would like to know. Your unpleasant experience and concerns about mechanical issues have cost them a potential sale. Viewers of this channel would find it helpful to know what the mechanical issues are. I've had issues with other machines and documented these issues on the channel. I like to provide ìnformation and solutions so that viewers get detailed information that assists their decisions. Hey Dustin, Thanks for stopping by the channel. We appreciate our viewers even if Florida travel videos aren't their thing. I've learned that one can't be all things to everyone. What one person may enjoy another might find boring. Filming from a motorcycle only tells a small portion of the information about an area. Likewise, time and money can limit one's ability to travel and make professional quality videos. I make zero income from these videos. In fact, I've spent thousands of dollars on equipment to produce these videos. In other words, this is a hobby. This is why so many content creators are leaving TH-cam. They can't financially justify continuing. Unlike other creators, I've never asked viewers to support the channel financially. I have no Patreon account, and TH-cam changed their monetization policy to make it impossible for small channels like this one to generate any funding from advertisers despite using the channel to support themselves. I hope this helps viewers to understand the difficulties content creators face. Some videos are popular, and others aren't. Just like Disney, some movies are hits, and some aren't. But I'm undeterred. I will continue until I can't. We will have a series coming up that may be more to your liking. We are finally headed to Alaska after Covid put that plan on hold a few years back. Our very first video was based on this trip. Best wishes and take care, Mike

    I love aluminum trailers .. but the thing that worries me about them is "Work Hardening" of the metal, where you get a crack because the aluminum had become hardened in a high stress, movement or vibration area

    • @aegismotoadventures1616
      @aegismotoadventures1616 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Happy Hands, It is so nice to hear from you. You make a valid point. To expound on Happy Hands comment, I'll try to add some context. Certain grades of aluminum tend to be harder and less malleable, but all grades of aluminum tend to work harden with only one bend. Any additional bending risks a fracture and failure at the bend. I am uncertain what grade aluminum is used in Aluma Trailers, but I'm confident that the manufacturer has selected the appropriate grade. Let's take a look at the different grades. 2000 series- Softer and more malleable. Often used in light duty trim, castings and extrusions. 5000 series- Harder, but still malleable. Often used in marine applications because of its resistance to salt water. 6000 series- Harder still and much less malleable. Often referred to as aircraft grade aluminum. 7000 series- Hardest. Often used in high stress application where lightness is still needed. I'm sure that the failure I experienced was due to the ramp cycling through compression and rebound over many miles on the road. What I mean by this is that braking would have sent the ramp forward compressing the aluminum straps and excellerating would have caused rebound. This repeated flex over time caused a failure. On a lightly used trailer, this would never happen. At least my unfortunate experience allows one to see how I remedied the problem. Take care, Mike

      Wow, Hardy, That was eagle eye detection. You are correct that other videos show the removal of the factory stabilizer. However, after years of riding the KTM 790, I've concluded that the factory stabilizer doesn't really dampen. It may, but not much, if any. What it does do is creates a long stroke of extra support at the bottom of the triple tree. I deliberately left the OEM stabilizer in place to help reduce twisting motion. Time will tell if my reasoning is sound. I don't believe it hurts function to leave it on. This would be a great question for an engineer at KTM. Thanks for stopping by. Take care, Mike

      Hey piratepete117, Nice to hear from you. On our last trip, the cup holder worked well. There was no interference at all. I did, however, alter the mounting some. Where the screw goes through the plastic, I placed the screw through the highest portion of the upper slot. This allows the weight to hang instead of topple. This would make more sense when you see how it's shipped. I also had to drill the slot ever so slightly to allow the screw to fit. Go carefully here. I then added a washer that was slightly larger than the screw head to provide more of a holding surface. All this can be completed with basic shop tools. The only thing I noticed that might seem problematic was my knee would sometimes bump it. A simple adjustment was all it took to swing it back to vertical. So far, so good. The thing I really liked about the cup holder is that it was adjustable. Different sized bottles were no problem. Cheers, Mike

      I did a video on this very topic. It’s a motorcycle (a cycle with a motor), but “bike” is short for bicycle, meaning “two wheels”, so the Spyder is not a bike, though I still refer to mine as a bike out of habit. It’s a trike, a reverse trike, and a motorcycle. But not a bike. Again, I still occasionally refer to my Spyder as a “bike”.

      Hi Spyder Minimalist, Thanks for throwing your opinion out there. I really do enjoy having people read through the comments and keeping the thread going. Here in Florida, we have the old people tricycles. They have a nice basket in the back and are quite popular in the retirement communities. We also have many recumbent tricycles here. My neighbor has two. One for his wife and one for himself. These adult tricycles are commonly referred to as bikes. I wasn't trying to stir up controversy on the thumbnail text, but mission accomplished. Ha. In using that text, bike, I was merely using a colloquial term that is commonly stated to refer to motorcycles as well as bicycles, including three-wheeled versions thereof. The truth is, the word bike was easier to fit into the thumbnail and description. I never considered the term to be controversial. However, I stand firm on the legal description. I can't say every country worldwide classifies Spyders as motorcycles, but here in the USA, they do. Can my Canadian friends sound off? For registration purposes, are Spyders considered motorcycles? Thanks for stopping by. I would love to have you as a regular commenter. You're thoughtful and fair. Take care, Mike
