Fall / Winter California Gravel Event Calendar Preview
Great ride, great storytelling!
Thanks. A totally worth it experience.
Amazing right by my house! I mountain biked it years ago so now Ill take my gravel bike on it!
Only thing is how overgrown in might be this summer.
Amazing ride I just downloaded the route to my Wahoo thanks!
I hope to make it back to ride this in July
@@GravelBikeCalifornia if you're going to do it again let me know. A friend of mine did the route with you guys a couple years ago and he told me they discontinued the event. But we have a good gravel Community here in town we will join! I ride with Dave zabriskie and his kids all the time I'll try to get them on board!
You're welcome. Honorable Mentions: Huff Master Loop (Grasshopper series) Kizo Play National Monument (best in spring, super bloom) Dirt Gibraltar (Santa Barbara) Dirt Baldy (Tour of California) Old Caz Route (Russian River) Top 10 Gravel Rides: Big Bear: San Bernardino Mountains, riding both sides of the lake, featuring San Gorgonio and Holcomb Valley with Gold Rush history. Fresno Cycling: Sierra foothills, Raymond route along Chowchilla River, best in spring for cooler temperatures and greenery. Pacifico Mountain: Los Angeles area, 40-mile loop in Angeles National Forest with views of Mount Baldy and Wilson. Half Moon Bay: Coastal ride with bluff views, cypress tree tunnel, Redwoods climb, and Pisma Creek descent. Owens Valley: Alabama Hills, scenic beauty, Disney-like Tuttle Creek, and movie road photo opportunities. Lassen Gra: New event in Lassen National Park area, featuring Susan River and volcanic activity. Mount Tam: Marin County, historic trails, mountain biking roots, and scenic views. Mammoth Tough: Eastern Sierra, awe-inspiring landscapes with 14,000-foot peaks, best in fall. Catalina Island: Epic adventure with island-wide routes, historic stagecoach roads, and fabulous descents. Old Coast Highway (Big Sur): Iconic coastline views, Bixby Bridge, short but memorable dirt ride with multiple landscapes.
Great writeup. Looks like you're over-qualified to be our first editor-in-chief!
Catalina Island is a rewarding ride. Great views and amazing experience.
I didn't have to think twice about putting it so high, so soon..
Great job Zach! Stoked to hit the dirt in Catalina -- and frankly, all these places! I haven't been to most of them!
Let's get to work then!!
Great video Zack! It's great to see all this route recon. I think I see some trips to SoCal and Mammoth in my future 🔮
I'll be up at Mammoth Tuff for sure. LMK if you need a hookup coming down here.
Thanks Zack. Other rides I think would make this list: truckee/tahoe and Lost and Found.
Lost and Found I definitely want to get in there before I update this list.
I totally agree. Truckee Gravel and Lost & Found are both epic rides with multiple course options that change slightly each year. Spectacular and uncrowded areas.
Some of your picks have Mountain Lions. Don't go alone.
A Garmin inRach too.
Love it!! Big Sure is surely amazing!
Feels like a forty mile experience that clocks in half that milage.
Thanks for including the Lassen Gravel Adventure Ride. Hope to see you again this year. Great list and video.
It's going to take a little more juggling to make it happen this year, but I have a plan. Congrats on putting together such a great event in a number of ways.
Thank You Zack, loved your Top Ten! Dawn and I already have made plans to do Big Sur and Mammoth later this year 👍
Hopefully, Big Sur will get fixed. See you in Mammoth.
epic compilation! Thank you for the blood and sweat went into this fine cut. I can't wait to finish them all.. some day.. these trails are part of best of the world..
I know making it across the state is tough. Even I'd love to do all these rides again.
Great video Zach! I need to increase my patreon…
Ha. I appreciate being in this community the most. Thanks for supporting!
Woooo podium! #TUFF 😄
Highest event!!
Another great video. Thanks for highlighting these amazing rides
Wouldn't look so good with all the cycling models I have along...
Some great rides on this list! Plenty of bucket list material there. Honored that our local event made the cut. I can't say I disagree with you 😊
I figured you'd recognize a few...
Great list! Just received my GBC shirt and sticker for the truck!
Thanks. I imagine your Kelly Blue Book value just went up.
Awesome….! Thank you
Our pleasure!
great video, thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Much poison oak over growth?
I think the Connector Trail is well maintained, but the Quarry Trail try not to fall off.
Saw you were on the LAUF for this adventure. Any suggestion for the tire choice for Catalina?
Definitely want something that starts with the number 4. Not technical, but some of the road has washboard.
old school punk
Wouldn't have it any other way...

Thanks for helping me explore all the riding that CA has to offer!
...and thanks for the support. Keep sharing your thoughts as you knock these routes off.
Just had the chance to ride this loop over the weekend, and it was amazing. The gravel climbs were legit, but the scenery and fresh air kept it enjoyable, and the tailwind back to the start was awesome. It felt like I was riding an e-bike at times. Thanks for creating these guides. I love exploring, and it makes it a little easier when riding somewhere new if I've already had a detailed scouting report from GBC.
On our Send It ride a year later, the weather wasn't as perfect as the area around Bixby was foggy, but no complaints as you can tell it's still very epic. Definitely feels longer than a twenty mile ride.
Can you edit this video to include Yankee Jim’s? This way I can tell my girlfriend “see, the first gravel ride I took you on is in fact a beginners ride” 😂
That would be quite the baseline...
Fantastic video - great summary of the entire course for those thinking of doing such an event. This one looks pretty laid back, but epic at the same time.
I think the course will be slightly different this year, but Fresno Cycling plays the combo of laid-back and well supported very well.
I’m glad that they never developed the island one of the few places in LA county that isn’t ruined
We don't need an Ibiza West here.
cool...i wanna bike ,camp, and spearfish at one of the campgrounds.....
Next time we'll cover more island.
Cant wait to rip my dirt bike on it!!! 🙌🏼
Even if they can get part done soon...
The very essence of gravel riding- adapting to, and riding on whatever exists in one’s home region. Excellent!
Just give us a placd to ride!
Incredible video! I'm sure this took tons of time and effort to make. Loved it!
Not as much as when you love a ride like this.
Some of the tracks along the Eel River across from 162 are covered by landslides.
That's probably the main issue of where they're going to need $$ for.
@@GravelBikeCalifornia fun story. Relatively of my grandfather’s I interviewed in 1993 rode the train from near Dos Rios on his way to go to school at then Berkeley Farm school aka later UC-Davis in 1927.
Cost of the boat ride to the island ???
About $100 round trip
What do you mean "you need to make bike reservations"? You can't bring the bike on the boat, like you're literally and clearly doing here?... So confusing
You need to reserve a "bike space" when you purchase a boarding pass and you need to do it early. You can't just show up with a bike and expect to get it on the boat.
@@PrestonBoebel Ohhh OK that makes sense. Maybe you explained that in the video and I missed it. If so, apologies
They changed the system a week before we did it from doing it online to having to call it in. It might have changed back since.
Love riding there and go almost every year great video
Go GravelPack!!
Great vid once again! You guys are way better than tv
...I know my voice isn't made for radio.
Great vid! A couple of those water crossings are deeper than they look lol 😅 Going back at the end of the month for some bikepacking 😎
My friend went later in April and didn't have as much of an issue.
Great video... brought back memories
Glad to hear it
Nice ride! What was the date of this ride?
I think the first of April
Awesome ride. Me and my friend do this ride once or twice a year. Best time to do it is in spring or fall. Did it once in July, almost had a heat stroke 😵💫
you can definitely feel that without summer with the absence of trees.
Great video!
Thanks!
That ride exceeded all expectations and I want to go back. Also, having amazing riding partners didn’t hurt.
Ditto. Can't wait til we make it an extended trip!
Love twin harbors
Imagine if we had triplet harbors!!
My bucket list has a new item. Beautiful views, great video!
I know you'd absolutely love this ride!
Great video. Thank you 🙏
thanks for checking it out again.
Great video! It brought back some fond memories of the Catalina 50 Miler Ultramarathon I did a couple of times back in the 90's :)
That makes me want to run again!
Awesome video. I really enjoyed it. What time of year did you guys go ?
The first weekend of April
Thanks for this fun interview and good to know my eMTB is welcome on all rides. Still looking to get a gravel and go analog again.
We definitely welcome anyone who wants to ride!
