In the early 1970s I attended courses on electronics at the BBC's Engineering Training Centre at Wood Norton near Evesham. I took my 8mm cine camera with me and 35 years later found the sound recording I made with some of the shots. So, here it is after 40 years.

I found this old documentary from 1991 while sorting out some old family VHS tapes. It gives an interesting insight into the last days of the Soviet period.

The theory that Hurrem plotted or had anything to do with either Ibrahim or Mustafa's death has never been proven nor disproven. It's only assumed, mere assumption of what might have happened. But highly unlikely they were really totally innocent.

The thing I can’t reconcile in this account and (some, not all) others, is that such an intelligent and authoritarian emperor would or could be persuaded to kill his confidant/Grand Vizier and his firstborn son by a mere woman, and later another son… persuaded by whom this time, as Roxelana was dead? Even if other historians hadn’t written that the Sultan had evidence of wrong-doing on the part of these three men, I would still find it hard to believe that it wasn’t the Sultan’s own will and decision. This was Suleiman the Magnificent, not Czar Nicholas the II

There was plenty of evidence against Ibrahim and Mustapha, the fantastical narrative in this video was taken from European lazy research before modern research tools. Both of the were power hungry and wanted Mustapha to take the throne, so they were killed in the game of thrones. Bayazid broke the same law that Saddam Husain' son in law broke, 'If there is problem at home, you don't run to the neighbours'. When he was loosing the games of thrones with his brother, we sought refuge with the Safavids.

Historically speaking, Suleyman was gay and his principal catamite was Pargali Ibrahim (whom he ordered to be strangled at Hurrem's suggestion). See a book recently published in Turkey: EŞCİNSELLİĞİN TOPLUMSAL TARİHİ (SOCIAL HISTORY OF HOMOSEXUALITY). But this is obviously not featured in TV series. 🌷️

We always thought his overcoat and flat cap were a little comical but we learned much of our critical technical knowledge from him. In fact, I greatly treasure the training at Wood Norton which was second to none in technical matters. I would not say the same of the BBC's management training, but John was not involved with that.
