I've let things get the better of me. (Vlog - January 2025)
Hopefully heading away again soon in the Berlingo for a much-needed reset. For the last six months or so, I've been burning the candle at both ends. Yes, I've been having plenty of exercise, but this has been accompanied with a very bad sleep pattern/depravation and too much drinking. It's the GenX way to deal with issues by self-medicating with alcohol, but having deal with terrible Govt. and with all the other woes of modern living, it's understandable!

I must be going soft - Glamping it on the South Coast!
มุมมอง 11714 วันที่ผ่านมา
Made it down to the South Coast to a well-known location called Durdle Door for some pre-Christmas hiking along the coast. Stayed in a warm and cosy camping pod that I set up in my non-minimalistic style - extravagances included a microwave oven! Reason for the stays in the Shepard's Huts and Camping Pod is that the site rules do not allow stays in 'improvised' car campers like my Berlingo - fa...

Amazing Wildman Woods Car Camp - Eat, Drink, Hike!

Another Autumn trip over to the Brecon Beacons in the Citroen Berlingo no-build camper. The usual mix of eating, drinking and hiking the hills and mountains of this lovely area! Gary,,,,get to the quacks mate,,,have a bit if an MOT and get a bit of a loose plan matey for getting to feel a bit better bud. I've been feeling exactly the same,,,tired, poor sleep, fed up with our country and how its being run,,,costs of stuff, taxes etc and all the crap news. I went to the docs, and they've found I'm pre-diabetic and have been put on a bit if a healthy eating plan,,,not a diet, but a lower carb situation,,,,can still have a bevvy (sensibly, but at least it isnt off limits),,,, I've been on it for a week and i feel really great mate. See the dr, have a bit of a natter and see what they say. The way I see it, if i can reverse the pre-diabetes without giving up everything then that will be a winner. Bit more walking with a little rig in the backpack, and try and enjoy our lovely countryside, like you do. I sometimes just go down to the beach with a very small stove and brewkit and just watch the world go by, take in the sea air and have a brew and recharge. Tell you what would be great, a bit of a rally/meet up/eyeball(!) in Dorset somewhere where all us outdoor/radio blokes have a meet up and share our loads so to speak and have a bit of a laugh. I go down to Lyme Regis area alot, its my happy place, and only a couple of hours from me on Hampshire south coast. Keep up the great content Gary,,,love the videos and your honesty. You'll get there mate. Tim 26TM2636

      Sounds like you've got your act together Tim and a sustainable one at that! I've got it a bit ass-about-face at the moment with doing the exercise (usually the hard bit for most folks) and my diet is Ok, but the general levels of drink consumption have crept up and I regret the few binges over Xmas and that's got to stop! Golden Cap is just up from Lyme Regis and you won't find a better spot for a brew and some radio - I'm not one for crowds (i.e more than about four people!), but it'd be good to meet up around there at some point! All the best!

    Nice to see you Gary and well done for being honest. I am with you on the spirits as its so easy to let that get out of control. If I am honest we drink wine with most meals in the evenings. We try to keep it down to a couple of glasses but its more at the weekend. We have a rule that once the single bottle is empty (between two) we wont open another. Even that is too much really but it helps with aches and pains in the winter.

    • @104s_Unplugged
      @104s_Unplugged 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Great to hear from you Fred! Yep, spirits mustn't enter the building from now on - t.b.h, I don't see a bottle of wine each with food spread over an evening being a problem, but moving over to spirits afterwards is going too far (it starts out as a late night tot, but ends up as four!).

      I did go dry for 8 weeks last year - felt terrible, suffered nightmares and didn't lose an ounce in weight. I'm weak with going onto spirits after wine/beer, so just won't have them in the house. Shame, it does take the pain away for a few hours! All the best and hope to hook up at some point (perhaps in the Spring when the clocks go forward).

    I have a friend who was a really heavy drinker, he doesn't drink now because of the damage it was causing him, he got a very serious warning from his doctor and it scared him a lot. I'm impressed how someone who drank so much for so long could stop. What's going on in this country is utterly depressing but damaging yourself won't help. Let's wait and see what the next election will bring, it can only get better.

      @@104s_Unplugged As we all get older our bodies don't heal as well as they used to, we need to take more care of ourselves. If you can stop yourself from keeping booze in the house it makes things easier. I used to binge a lot when I was younger but I managed to stop drinking completely for about 20 years, I do drink a little bit now, but now I hate the feeling of being drunk. Don't be afraid to ask your GP for help. Take care of yourself, you only get one body.

      Hi Jason - I lead a relatively simple life and have an income from a rental property. Prior to that, I did 37 years in the electrical and network cabling industries with 28 of those running my own business - in the end, I was totally burnt out from that and, after the pandemic, decided to give a better work/life balance a go. With rising living costs, will probably have to take on a part time job or do something online as a new venture in due course. Cheers.

      Quite pleased with the gel fuel - lit up easily and boiled the water with half a tablet. All the best.

    Gotta be English! This area is correctly called 'Y Fannau' - we've discarded the made up Victorian name.

      Hi Denis. Dad was born in Pen y Banc in the Amman Valley (before it was absorbed by Ammanford) - Grandfather originally from South West Wales, but gave up on going to Grammer school and went to work in the mines at 13 in order to help look after the family. Most of my family are still in, and around, Swansea. Cheers.

    Great video chap!!....The views are amazing!!....as for your back........get yourself a qualified Osteopath, he or she will change your LIFE forever, I guarantee it. I've employed an Osteopath every now and again since about 1996, and they've sorted me right out every time bud........it's seriously like being given a new chance of life as it should be.......so just do it!! Preaching over, and thank you again for the upload!!.

      This is not going away and I have had a couple of Osteopaths recommended. My Mrs fixed her back this year (which had been bad since 2017) with a genuine Thai massage over two sessions (emphasis on the "genuine"!). One thing I won't have done is a steroid injection - don't believe in it at all! Cheers.

    Don't know if anyone has mentioned this but generally solar panel cells are connected in a series/parallel format to produce the required voltage output (think batteries). If just one of those cells is in shadow it will reduce the efficiency of its neighbours. I noticed the bottom cells of your panel on the ground were behind some grass. This may not make a massive difference but when you are looking for max output in hazy conditions it's worth checking. Interested to hear if others have found this.

    • @104s_Unplugged
      @104s_Unplugged 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Anything that prevents maximum light hitting the panels will reduce the output - biggest tip I have if you're around camp with a portable panel is not to just set it up and point it south, but to move it around to track the Sun as much as possible (same as a fancy auto tracking panel, but on the cheap!). Another tip, budget permitting etc., would be to buy bigger panels than you think you'll need - this panel does well but, with the benefit of hindsight, I'd probably go for a 150w or 200w set up. Cheers.

    A quick message to other TH-cam content creators, especially large ones - if you find my, or other, small creators videos and ideas of interest and subsequently replicate them in your own videos, please consider giving a shout-out to the source of your inspiration. Without a solid foundation of small creators, this platform will ultimately fail.

      It's very nice with a woodland full of camping spots - added benefits of proper toilets and a secure place to park the motor. Firewood for sale and spring water from the tap - all next to a river too!

      I remember back in the 80s, I'd just turned 16 and was sent out to a building site in the Winter - we had a 10min break at 10am and a half-hour for dinner at 1pm - the blokes used to cook a full English on a shovel (just washed the cement off with a hose beforehand). Best grub I ever did taste!

    😂 lol @ the writing in that shelter. I remember watching a NTN90clk news sketch. Come home to a real open fire buy a house in Wales 😂. As a englishman I've always found the welsh okay speak as I find

      I remember that sketch well! Whatever a person's cause is, putting graffiti on walls and trig points isn't going to help that cause and probably just alienate people (bit like the jackasses who spray orange paint on stuff).

    I'm looking foward to.watching you learn map and compass and orientatering gary, a skill I've forgotten over the years I was good at it back in the day. Are you doing videos on learning it. Bad backs as a sufferer are a bloody nuisance sometimes I have to swallow strong ibrobufen and Co codamol. My job has done my back in. Creams only last about 15mins I find.

    as mentioned already get the bcb cooker or find a small tin to burn that gel in gary. nice bag that seems ideal. absolutely stupid banning hexi though. eco friendly wooden firelighters work well too as a replacement 👍 🏕

      I've picked up a BCB cooker since the vid was made but not used the kit in anger yet - got it in the car as a backup in case I run out of gas! I'll give it a good go when I'm up in Mid Wales next. Cheers.

      I did another a few years back - a Wellington Bomber crash at Waun Rydd which resulted in five fatalities. I visited on a cold wet day, with low clouds, which made the scene quite harrowing. Might do some more as it makes a change from hunting down trig points!
